Quick Guide Chart Handling

1 PAPER CHARTS VS. ECDIS

1.1 Chart collection

With paper charts only a small stock of
charts, intended for the next voyage was
available on board. The complete world
folio of paper charts, usually was only
available in the store and not during the
voyage. By using ECDIS you will receive a
complete world folio of charts every three
month. So the complete collection of ENC
is physically already available on board. The only thing you have to do is to license
the chart for usage.

1.2 To buy a chart

If you want to buy a paper chart you
need to go to the store, contact
your chart supplier or the agent.
Normally the chart delivery was
only possible in port. By using
ECDIS you can buy the chart from
all over the world via e-mail or a
direct internet connection. The
chart itself you have already on board on your base-DVD. Before you are able to
use the ENC chart data and up-dates, you need to buy the license. This is just a
small file which allows the ECDIS to install the selected ENC

1.3 Chart correction

For paper charts you receive
a huge number of NtM in port.
Then you need to compare
the changes for the different
charts with your stock of
charts on board. After that you
can start with the time
consuming work of chart
correction. Using an ECDIS you will receive an update DVD/CD in port and you
just need to install the update from the DVD/CD, or you can request updates via e-
mail for all charts installed on your system or just for a selection.

2 CHART ORDERING
ENC chart licenses are available for various durations depending on the flag state
rules. Normally they can be purchased in multiples of 3 months, but some countries
deny selling licenses below one year. When a chart license expires, the chart
correction service will stop working. The chart itself therefore becomes unofficial.
It may however always be shown on the ECDIS, together with a warning about the
expired license.

A chart licence always includes the provision with updates for the respective chart.

Optimized chart ordering consists out of 6 major steps:

Ordering a new catalogue ensures latest valid chart cells are selected in step two.

Press the Charts button from the left panel and choose the Order tab.

Press the Catalogue button in the Request for Data group.

Choose the format SENC or TX-97 and the Transmission period Send once or
Send weekly. After that press the Next button.

You can send the order by two ways:

 Save to disk

 Send request
 See step 6 Placing license order (page 14)

Press the Charts button from the left panel and choose the Order tab.

Press the Chart Catalogue button from the left panel that opens below the Charts
button.

Press <Select catalogue> from the right buttom panel and select the format TADS
or TX-97.

Press the Select button from the Chart selection group.

There are four options available

 by region

 by cursor

 by point on a map

 by route

…by region
Having chosen by region a window with Selection by area will open up. Check
the checkboxes to the left of the necessary geographic region and press the Select
button.

The selected charts will be highlighted in red.

…by cursor
Having chosen by cursor the Select area cursor will appear. Left click in the map,
and then moving the trackball you will make the area larger/smaller.

Once you are happy with the area. Click the left button again and the selected
charts will be highlighted in red.

 …by point on a map
Having chosen by point on map the Select charts cursor will appear. Position the
cursor, which will appear, on the necessary point of the chart and press the left
trackball button.

In the dropdown list, which will appear, all available charts under this place will be
displayed. Select the necessary charts by checking the checkboxes to the left of
the chart names.

Once you are happy with charts selected click the left button twice and the selected
charts will be highlighted in red.

 …by route
Having chosen by route a sub-menu will appear. Select a route for which the
charts are required.

Navi-Planner will show the selected route and automatically select all the charts
within the chart selection corridor. By default this corridor is set to 5 nm. The
selected charts will be highlighted in red.

By optimizing the selection, necessary airtime is reduced by deleting not necessary

orders. Press the show settings button on the right side of the screen.

Switch to the Chart catalogue tab. The chart display can be filtered according to
the usage band, e.g. only harbour charts. After that not necessary charts, like all
the harbour charts along the route, can be deselected manually.

The coverage area needs to be checked to ensure a full coverage with ENCs along
the route. ENCs are defined in cells and assigned to specific countries that need
to create the charts. But some cells are not completely filled, because they reach
further territorial waters. In this case additional ENCs need to be ordered to cover
these gaps.

Press the show settings button on the right side of the screen. Switch to the Chart
catalogue tab and check the Show coverage area checkbox.

The coverage area within the chart borders will be highlighted in red. For those
areas without a coverage you can select charts manually, e.g. by point on a map.

The next step is to select the license period. Press the License button in the
Request for Data group

Choose the subscription period 3, 6, 9 or 12 and check the Receive Up-to-date

charts from server checkbox if you need to receive the chart from the server and
that press the Next button.

Navi-Planner will optimize your order by deleting charts already available and will
display a message with optimization result. Press the Next button to continue.

Navi-Planner will show you a price information for your order. Press the Next button
to continue.

If the Transas Gateway is installed and there is an online connection you can send
your request directly without a mail program (Send request). In other way you
need to use a mail program (Save to Disk)

2.1 Save to disk

Check the Save to Disk checkbox and enter the email address to which you want
to receive the answer from the Chart server. Press the Finish button to continue.

Specify the path to folder on the memory stick, in which the order should be saved,
e.g. Outbox and press the OK button.

The confirmation window will appear. For sending the request it is necessary to
follow the given instructions. Press the OK button.

In a short while our chart server will revert to you with an answer on your order.
When the reply is received save all attachments to your USB stick and continue
with  See INSTALLATION (page 19)

2.2 Send request

Check the Send request checkbox and enter press the Finish button.

3 ORDER CHART UPDATES

ENC charts follow two different update cycles and need to be updated regularly.

 Every 3 months a new base DVD of charts is issued and sent on board/to
the office

 Weekly there are updates available for the latest base DVD and only valid
for this one

 The updates are cumulative and contain all updates for the same base
DVD that were issued already

Optimized update ordering consists of 6 major steps:

You may recognize that 5 five of the steps are the same as for chart ordering.
Therefore, we will only demonstrate step 5 at this point.

Select the charts as described in chapter 2. After that press the Updates button in
the Request for Data group.

Selection only checkbox is checked by default. If necessary to order updates for

all installed charts, check All installed charts checkbox. Choose the Transmission
period Send once or Send weekly and press the Next button to continue.

Navi-Planner will optimize your order by deleting those charts not installed on the
system and will display a message with optimization result. Press the Next button
to continue.

4 REQUEST A FULL LICENSE
Every chart license is bound to the current base DVD and needs to be renewed
periodically. In case of base DVD change during a licence period, the license for
the chart needs to be updated. Updating does not mean to buy a new license, it
means requesting the updated license file.

Press the Full Licence button in the Request for Data group.

If the Transas Gateway is installed and there is an online connection you can send
your request directly without a mail program (Send request). In other way you
need to use a mail program (Save to Disk)

5 INSTALLATION
There is no difference which type of data you would like to install

 Licenses for new charts

 Chart data

 Catalogue

 Updates

 Full license

The installation process always follows two major steps.

Insert the DVD/CD or USB stick with the data you wish to install. Press the Charts
button from the left panel and choose the Install tab.

Press the CD Drive or Browse button from the Scan group.

If you are using an USB stick you need to browse to the folder where there is
saved and press Go

Navi-Planner will start to scan the selected source.

When the source scan is completed the Source scan completed window will
appear. Select the data which you intend to install and press the Install selected
items button.

The installation will start and on its finish, Navi-Planner will show a report about the
installation operation.
