I like holidays by the sea but I don’t enjoy spending time in


museums. Last year, my family and I went to Greece and I
spent most of the week on the beach. Next month we are
going to Florida. I’ve been to Canada, but I’ve never been to
the United States, so I’m really looking forward to it. I’d like
to go to Disneyland, but I don’t know whether there will be
enough time.

To start your thinking … about important moments

1. Track 1.2.Listen to this woman telling her story


about an important event in her life. Tick (√) the

2. Now think about something important that has


happened in your life, or in the life of someone you
know. Decide what you’re going to say with the help of
the questions below.

Was it a surprise?
How did you feel?
Were there any problems?

In pairs, tell each other your stories. As you listen to


your partner, tick the questions (s)he choose to answer. When you write a story, you’ll need to use past tenses
to describe what happened.

The day I broke my leg

Getting started on the story!


4. When you write a story you want to make sure that the reader is interested from the start. Here are some
‘beginnigns’ of different stories. In pairs, decide how you could continue the sentences. Use your own ideas but
use the verb tense given

6. In pairs, read the beginning and the ending of these stories. Together decide what happened in the middle.
Then compare your stories with another pair.
