Simple Past. (Regular and irregular verbs)

We use the simple past:

1. For an action that happened at a specific time in the past.

He left the office at nine last night.


What time did you have lunch yesterday?

2. For past habits or states. In this case we can also used to + verb.

Joe worked in his uncle´s store when he was younger.

 I saw a movie yesterday.


 I didn't see a play yesterday.
 Last year, I traveled to Japan.
 Last year, I didn't travel to Korea.
 Did you have dinner last night?
 She washed her car.
 He didn't wash his car.

Spelling (regular verbs) 3. Stop ……stopped.


1. Decide ………decided. Prefer….preferred.
2. Study…………studied.
But Play…………..played. 4.Travel…...traveled.

IRREGULAR VERBS do not take – ed in the simple past. Each irregular verb forms the simple
past in its own way.

For example: buy….bought; eat….ate; know…knew. (see grammar reference)

Irregular verbs form the negative and interrogative form with did, like regular verbs.

They stole his car. They didn´t steal his car. Did they steal his car?
She had long hair. She didn´t have long hair.

PIRATE STORY

An old pirate was sitting in the bar. He was smoking a pipe and drinking a glass of

rum. He was wearing an eye patch and he had a parrot on his shoulder and a

wooden leg. Instead of his right hand he had a metal hook. A young sailor was

chatting with the pirate and he asked him about his adventures at sea.

‘So, how did you lose your leg?’, the young man asked the pirate.

‘Arrr! ,’ said the pirate, ‘You see, some sharks were circling the ship when I

fell overboard. Luckily, my men pulled me back onto the ship before the sharks

ate me completely, but one of the sharks got my leg.’

Weather Forecaster: Good afternoon and welcome to the weather forecast.


Let's take a look at the weather outside now. What's it like? Well, it's
currently raining and cloudy in southern Oregon while northern Oregon is
cold and clear. The sun is shining, but it's rather cold up here in the North!
The temperature is currently 45 degrees in the southern Oregon and only 30
degrees in the North.

Shall we see what the weather will be like tomorrow? Well, it will be rainy in
