Growing Up with
Technology
Many people think that children don’t know how to be
polite any more. They believe that technology is causing
this problem. For example, today people communicate by
sending short messages on their mobile phones. They
rarely include the words please or thank you. Also,
applications with virtual assistance, such as Siri, don’t use
any polite words when they give answers. Children believe
that these impolite conversations are normal, so they are
growing up without important social skills.
The Amazon company believes that it has got the answer
to this problem – a new app for children’s phones. The
name of the Amazon app is FreeTime and it has got a
“Magic Word” feature. Users ask the virtual assistant,
Alexa, a question. The app teaches them to say please
and thank you when they are talking on it. Alexa also gives
a very polite reply such as, “Thank you for asking so
nicely.” Amazon hopes children will copy the app and it will
teach them how to be more polite.
Some people don’t agree that this new technology can
help. For example, Josh Golin, director of Campaign for a
Commercial-Free Childhood, thinks that children should
turn off their phones and play together more. According to
experts, children learn important social skills through play
and face-to-face interaction. Golin also thinks that parents
should spend more time with their children and teach them
how to be polite.
