Seventh Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia took the throne after the
death of his brother King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud . Below is his biography.

Life and Education

Salman bin Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman bin Faisal bin Turki bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin
Saud was born on December 31, 1935. son of King Abdulaziz (b. 1876-1953) and Hessa bint
Ahmed Al Sudairi (b. 1900-1969). Salman and his six brothers make up what is referred to as the
Sudairi Seven. He was raised in Murabba Palace

The Crown Prince received his early education in the Prince’s School in Riyadh, which was
founded by his father, King Abdulaziz, to provide education to his children. Crown Prince Salman
bin Abdulaziz Al Saud studied religion and modern science.

At the age of nineteen Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud started his governmental
work, when his father appointed him as Emir and Mayor of Riyadh on March 17th, 1954. On April
19th, 1955, he was appointed by his half-brother, King Saud (b. 1902-1969) as mayor of Riyadh
at the rank of minister. He remained in this office on December 25ft, 1960.

On February 4th, 1963, Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz was appointed governor of the
Riyadh Province. He stayed in this office until 2011. During his time in office he contributed in the
transformation of Riyadh from a mid-sized town into a major urban metropolis, while he also
attracted tourism, capital projects, and foreign investment inside his country. Reportedly, his
administration of the Riyadh Province was free of corruption.

FAMILY LIFE

Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has been married three times. First he married his
cousin, Sultana bint Turki Al Sudairi. Together they had six children:

 Prince Ahmed (b. 1958-2002)
 Prince Sultan (b. 1956)
 Prince Abdulaziz (b. 1960)
 Prince Faisal (b. 1970)
 Princess Hussa (b. 1974).
Later on, he married Sarah bint Faisal Al Subai’ai with whom he has one son, Prince Saud. In his
third marriage he married Fahda bint Falah bin Sultan Al Hithalayn with whom he has six
children:

 Prince Mohammed
 Prince Turki (b. 1987)
 Prince Khalid
 Prince Nayif
 Prince Bandar
 Prince Rakan.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz was proclaimed the seventh
King of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 3 Rabi’ al Thani 1436H (January 23, 2015), upon the
death of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.. Concurrently,
Salman’s half-brother, Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, assumed the position of Crown Prince, also
assuming the title of First Deputy Prime Minister.

Salman’s governmental experience

On February 4, 1963, Salman was appointed governor of Riyadh Province. His tenure lasted for
48 years from 1963 to 2011. In January 2011, he ordered action against Riyadh beggars “who try
to take advantage of the generosity of people”. All foreign beggars were deported and Saudi
beggars were placed in a rehabilitation programme by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

On November 5, 2011, Salman was appointed Minister of Defence, replacing his full brother, the
late Crown Prince Sultan, and late Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz was named the governor of the
Riyadh Province. He was also named a member of the National Security Council (NSC).

On June 18, 2012, he was appointed Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia shortly after the death of his
brother, Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz. He was also made deputy prime minister.

Being a member of the House of Saud, Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud is also
member of the so called Sudairi Seven – a powerful alliance of seven full brothers within the
House of Saud.

In January 2011 as Governor of Riyadh he ordered action against all of the beggars of the
capital. All foreign beggars were deported, while Saudi beggars were placed in a rehabilitation
program arranged by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud launched a Twitter account on February 23rd, 2013.

Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and his family own the international newspaper,
Asharq Al-Awsat, as well as the Saudi daily newspaper, Al Eqtisadiah.
His son, Prince Sultan, was the first person of royal blood, the first Arab as well as the first
Muslim to fly in outer space when he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-51-G) in
June 1985.

The Crown Prince underwent spine surgery in the US in August 2010 and remained out of the
kingdom for recovery.

Various analysts argue that the Crown Prince suffers from both dementia and Alzheimers.

Since 1956, King Salman has chaired various humanitarian and service committees that provide
relief from natural and man-made disasters. For his humanitarian services, he has been awarded
many medals and decorations, including awards from Bahrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France,
Morocco, Palestine, the Philippines, Senegal, the United Nations, Yemen, and the King
Abdulaziz Medal – First Class.

He is a recipient of several honorary degrees and academic awards, including an honorary


doctorate from the Islamic University of Madinah, the Prince Salman academic award, and the
Kant Medal by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in appreciation of
his contributions to the field of science.

His royal highness prince Salman bin Abdul-Aziz was born in Riyadh in 5/10/1354H


corresponding to 31/12/1935.

Education
He received his early education in the princes school in Riyadh which was established by king
Abdul-Aziz – may Allah rest his soul – in 1356H to education his sons. His highness studied in it
the religious and modern sciences and concluded the holy Quran in this school and celebrated
for that on Sunday 12/8/1346H. This school was managed by sheikh Abdullah Khayyat – may
Allah rest his soul –  speaker and Imam in the holy mosque.

On Tuesday 11/7/1373H corresponding to 16/3/1654D, his highness was appointed prince of


Riyadh region by delegation.
On Monday 25/8/1374H corresponding to 18/4/1955, the royal order number 5/10/2/1424 was
issued to appoint him Riyadh prince at minister rank.
On Sunday 7/7/1380H corresponding to 25/12/1960D, his highness resigned from Riyadh
principality and his resignation was approved by the royal order number 40 in 7/7/1380H.
On Monday 10/9/1382H corresponding to 4/2/1963, his highness was appointed as a prince of
Riyadh once again as per the royal order number 46 at the same date.
The human works captures his highness concern since 1956D as he headed a number of
primary and local committees and organizations to gather donations to help poor people and
those harmed by floods, earthquakes, and disasters in Arab and Islamic worlds and support the
Islamic world issues and advocate Muslims in any place.

On Tuesday, 11/7/1373 H, corresponding to 16/03/1954, Prince Salman Bin Abdul Aziz was
appointed acting governor of Riyadh region.

On Monday, 25/8/1374 H, corresponding to 18/04/1955, Royal Order No. 5/10/2/1424 was


issued appointing Prince Salman the governor of Riyadh Region at the rank of minister.
On Sunday, 07/07/1380 H, corresponding to 25/12/1960, he resigned from the emirate of Riyadh
Region, and the approval was issued by the Royal Order No. 40 in 7/7/1380 H.

On Monday, 10/09/1382, corresponding to 04/02/ 1963, Prince Salman was appointed again as
the governor of Riyadh Region, according to Royal Order No. 46.

On Saturday, 09/12/1432 H, corresponding to 05/11/2011, Royal Order No. A/288 was issued
appointing Prince Salman as the defense minister.

On Monday, 28/09/1433, corresponding to 18/06/2012, Royal Order No. A / 139 was issued
selecting Prince Salman as the Crown Prince and appointing him as deputy prime minister and
defense minister.
