THE NEED OF SKYSCRAPERS ‘HIGH RISESTRUCTURES’ IN

INDIA

ABSTRACT
Urban population is increasing every second and it continues to grow. The Urban population
is concentrated in less developed regions of the world. Due to population urban migration for
work and other things leaves cities short on affordable housing, transport link and may cause
several problems. Increased demand for urban spaces pushed the environment to grow
vertical & compact. Because of their massive bulk and soaring height, skyscrapers immensely
impact place making. This topic examines the need of skyscrapers as skyscrapers are exclusive
and have prevailed in many countries across the world. It also discusses about the problem of
horizontal expansion.
INTRODUCTIONS
Monumental structures were built for the Gods, including temples, pyramids & cathedrals
which pointed to the sky. Today’s monuments such as high-rise tall buildings symbolize
power, prestige, richness and glory. At present it is impossible to find a major city without
Skyscraper. Tall buildings are the most famous landmarks of the city. Symbol of pride,
dominance in power. The importance of Skyscraper in the present & future urban
development is increasing.
Some accidents have a huge impact on people’s views and when the world Trade Center
(WTC) tower collapsed in 2001, few people called skyscrapers death traps and hastily
predicted their demise as a building typology. But the past decade proved those views are
invalid as we have witnessed an unprecedented construction boom of tall and super tall
buildings worldwide. The past decade has witnessed the completion of more skyscraper than
any previous period in history. A race to earn the world’s tallest building title continues.
Aesthetics of buildings is not the major objective of architectural design. When considering
skyscrapers, it is more significant because their visual impact is more profound and extends
in time & space. They are basically designed to last for a long time & their humongous size
and ‘tallness’ exerts a great impact on visual appearance of the built environment. For
example, Burj Khalifa sets the perceptual characteristics of the city of Dubai to a viewer from
a distance even from the outskirts of the city.
LITERATURE REVIEW
The writers of several research papers have talked about STRUTURAL SYSTEM that has been
incorporated with the construction of Skyscrapers. The papers also included brief description about the
SAFETY MEASURES, Challenges in designing the skyscrapers. Author PINAK RAY in his paper
discussed about the key for the modern Skyscrapers namely mobility, materials, heat, speed, wind,
earthquake and evacuation. The papers also incorporated arguments against and in favour of Tall
buildings. The papers also talked about the techniques involved and the difficulties The bye laws are
the major factor for the construction of Skyscrapers.
In the research paper “SKYSCRAPERS AND PLACEMAKING: SUPPORTING LOCAL
CULTURE AND IDENTITY”, the writers Kheir Al-Kodmany and Mir M. Ali described and
evaluated skyscraper projects that have attempted to embrace traditional forms. In addition to
considering aesthetics and morphological issues, the paper stressed that skyscrapers’ design
should respect cultural values and practices in relation to functional issues and space utilities.
The writers concluded that Skyscrapers have become a force of American cultural hegemony
all over the world. In addition to the notable architectural critic Paul Goldberger who
lamented that all world cities have begun to look alike and explained that the skyscraper is a
contributing factor for urban landscape homogeneity. However, skyscrapers of distinct
culturally inspired forms may improve city’s identity and place making. To communicate to
the world their economic prosperity and scientific advancement, some cities are currently
striving deliberately to create iconic skyscrapers.
The writers noted skyscrapers generally have become inherently iconic mega-objects, and
they have an important role to play in supporting place making. Skyscrapers of national
significance should in particular be designed so that they retain the heart and soul of the city
and the region. They also pointed that if place making is not given due considerations, there
isa danger that no matter how crucial tall buildings may find their way into the future city’s
visible artifacts to accommodate the growing world population, they are also likely to turn
into eye sores and unwanted burdens on the urban design.
From a cultural perspective, this paper has dwelled on skyscraper design attempting to
embrace forms inspired by vernacular architecture and landscape. The design examples
presented there have consciously and admirably departed from the international design
template of skyscraper These limitations of an unwarranted overdose of cultural infusion
have been pointed out in this paper. Place making with tall buildings is indeed a
challengingdesign issue of our time.

METHODOLOGY
The process starts by identifying aims and objective which is then followed by literature
study and review about skyscrapers in place making. The literature gives clear view of the
need and involvement of high-rise structures in place making and also the problems
associated with the horizontal denser cities. The significance of skyscrapers and their
symbolism.
Byelaws, design considerations of the skyscrapers can be studied. Comparison of all the
provided data and the conclusion can be derived.

CONCLUSION

The urban population is increasing and the migration from rural to urban is also
increasing, therefore the vertical construction is the suitable solution for tackling the
horizontal expansion. There is a need for skyscrapers in India. In order to provide
shelter to such a huge population it is essential for the engineers or designers to keep
on building more innovative and mega structures. Skyscrapers in the future will not
only grow upward ,they will integrate themselves with smart technology and will
become multifunctional.
