Title: Firmware Release Doc.Number: KFS-7123-V4
Prepared by: Hank Wheeler Date: 1st Oct 2020

3 Release Description
This firmware and software release support a minor hardware change in the Fusesaver as
detailed below:

1. Measurement Current Transformer:

a. An alternate current transformer for measuring line current has been sourced,
tested and approved to mitigate short term supply shortages (COVID-19
related) and support Siemens global business continuity initiatives.
b. The alternate current transformer has an improved core material and
optimised winding design that improves measurement accuracy at low
currents and for asymmetric fault current measurements.
c. The alternate current transformer is approved with appropriate documented
technical support in the test report KFS-2049 (Fusesaver Alternate CT Test
Report) available upon request.
2. Microelectronics:
a. PCB component updates to match the alternate current transformer (i.e.
burden resistors)
b. Selected PCB component updated to higher specification in accordance with
the continual product improvement process.
New features, feature enhancements, changes and bug fixes have also been implemented
as described in the following sections by system element. Each issue has been functionally
classified according to IEEE C37.231 (2006) and for bug fixes the severity rating assessed
accordingly.

4 RCU Firmware
The following Remote control unit (RCU) firmware enhancements and vulnerabilities are
addressed in this release:

4.1 Intermittent communications between Fusesaver and RCU

Description: In circumstances where the RCU and Fusesaver line of site is obstructed,
connection can be intermittent resulting in inconsistent behaviour including:
· RCU reporting DNP3 “Communications Lost” point as expected, but the status of the
point changing frequently causing nuisance alarms
· RCU connection with a Fusesaver at the limit of range can degrade over time
· in multiple phase sites the RCU may fail to regain connection with the A-phase
Fusesaver after a temporary loss of communications
Classification: B7-Protocol and communication
Severity: Medium
These connectivity issues generally only occur where the RCU has not been installed within
suitable proximity, orientation and line of site to the Fusesaver.

Title: Firmware Release Doc.Number: KFS-7123-V4
Prepared by: Hank Wheeler Date: 1st Oct 2020
Resolution: The method of handling intermittent communications between the RCU and
Fusesaver has been improved to reduce the frequency and consequence of the above
issues.

4.2 RCU ethernet port

Description: In some instances, the ethernet connection between the RCU and customer
installed radio/modem becomes non-communicative.
Classification: B7-Protocol and communication
Severity: Medium
The loss of ethernet connection occurs infrequently but requires the RCU to be power cycled
to reset the connection.
Resolution: New configuration options are implemented enabling the RCU to power cycle
after a period of no communication.

4.3 TCP Listener / TCP Dual

Description: UDP communications was not fully supported in DNP3 protocol.
Classification: B7-Protocol and communication
Severity: Medium
Customers using UDP protocol could only use RCU firmware version 119.
Resolution: A UDP broadcast port has been added for TCP listener and TCP dual
interfaces.

4.4 TCP Listener / Unsolicited Responses

Description: TCP listener mode allows unsolicited responses.
Classification: B7-Protocol and communication
Severity: Low
The impact of this issue is low and the configuration parameter “Support Unsolicited
Responses” can be set to “Disable”, which would resolve this issue.
Resolution: Unsolicited responses are no longer sent when in TCP listener mode.

4.5 UDP only mode

Description: UDP only mode is added to the DNP3 communication interface options. This is
a feature addition, not a mandatory requirement for compliance. Implementation is compliant
with requirements of IEEE 1815-2012 DNP3 standard, section 13.
Classification: B7-Protocol and communication

4.6 RCU firmware updating USB Thumb Drive Compatibility
Description: RCU firmware updates are performed through the USB port located in in the
RCU. Some USB Thumb Drives types are not supported by the RCU resulting in difficulty to
update firmware.
Classification: B10-Enhancement
Severity: Low
The issue is usually be resolved by using a specific / simple USB Thumb Drive (Sandisk
Cruzer Switch 8 or 16GB)
Resolution: An improved bootloader has been developed which is compatible with a wider
range of USB Thumb Drives.
NOTE: RCU firmware should be updated to FW1602 using the Sandisk Cruzer Switch 8 or
16GB (or equivalent) to obtain the enhancement.

4.7 G50v3 time synchronisation

Description: The RCU firmware now supports g50v3 TCP over LAN time synchronisation
for the DNP3 protocol.
Classification: B10-Enhancement

4.8 DNP3 library update

Description: The DNP3 library supported by the RCU firmware has been updated to TMW
V3.26 (from V3.17).
Classification: B11-Change

4.9 RCU end time

Description: The RCU end time has been extended past year 2100.
Classification: B11-Change

4.10 Remote set hot-line tag

Description: A new DNP3 control point (C_PID) is added enabling SCADA to apply a “hot
line tag” operation (an equivalent to Fusesaver lever down).
Classification: B12-New feature

4.11 Clear remote set protection mode

Description: A new DNP3 control point (C_PID) is added enabling SCADA to clear any
remote set protection mode and return the Fusesaver to the configured protection mode.
Classification: B12-New feature

4.12 RCU support for sectionalizer
Description: The RCU now supports Fusesavers configured for sectionalizing functionality.
(includes DNP3 digital D_PID, analogue A_PID and control points C_PID).
Classification: B12-New feature

5 Fusesaver firmware
The following Fusesaver enhancements have been implemented in this release:

5.1 Dead time extension

Description: For Fusesavers with communications modules configured with second trip
enabled, the allowable maximum dead time has been increased:
Modifier Previous Setting Range New Setting Range
Dead time (OC: second trip disabled) 1 to 30s in 1s increments Same as previous
Dead time (OCO: second trip enabled) 2 to 30s in 1s increments 2 to 240s in 1s
increments3
Classification: B10-Enhancement

5.2 Lever down close blocking

Description: A new configuration option is available when the Fusesaver external lever is
pulled down. When enabled, the Fusesaver will reject ALL close requests irrespective of
source.
Modifier Previous Setting Range New Setting Range
Lever down close blocking N/A Enabled / disabled
Classification: B10-Enhancement

5.3 Manual ganged operation

Description: The ganged manual trip or close operation is enhanced to ensure capacitors
are charged in each phase before commanding the operation. This mitigates a risk of one
phase of the gang failing to operate.
Classification: B10-Enhancement

5.4 Load profile time sets

Description: The load profile feature is enhanced such that changes in time set events up to
240s do not cause load profile data for the day to be discarded.

3
If Fusesaver is configured with pseudo three phase trip and reclose then allowable dead time
settings range is limited to 10 to 60s
