Isotopes are an} 1, 4 clement having same atomic numbers (similar chemical properties) but different atomic mass. E.g. Isotopes of chlorine Cl-35 and Cl-37 have atomic masses 35 and 37 respectively. As they have the same atomic number 17, they possess same chemical properties. We cannot assign them different position in the periodic table simply because they have different atomic masses. As they show same chemical properties, they are placed in the same position. One limitation of Mendeleev’s classification is that it could not assign a position to hydrogen. Hydrogen resembles alkali metals in the combination with halogens, oxygen and sulphur. On the other hand, hydrogen resembles halogens in that it exists as a diatomic molecule and it combines with metals and non- metals to form covalent compounds. 18 (i) [Hydrogen resembles alkali metals in the combination with halogens, Its 1 ompound formed with halogens will be- a) HX B)HX2 ©) HbX D) HpX2 184i) ) their chemical properties are same. fb) their chemical and physical properties both are same. ) their physical properties are same. ) cannot say anything about their chemical properties. he atomic masses of element P and Q are 6 and 7 and their atomic number are 3 18 (iii) IMendeleev’s classification cannot assign position to a) Hydrogen ) Isotopes ©) hydrogen and Isotopes. d) Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulphur 18 (iv) [Hydrogen resembles halogens in that it exists as a a) Mono atomic molecule b) diatomic molecule ¢) tri atomic molecule d)all the above. 18 vy) Hydrogen combines with metals and non-metals to form ) Fonic compounds ) Covalent compounds, ) lonic and covalent compounds both |i) either ionic or covalent compounds
