Then they will see examples of how to correctly write out a comparison sentence and then use the
correct symbols to compare them.

General Goal(s): Students should be able to explain how to compare numbers and solve equations
correctly.

Specific Objectives: Students should be able to clearly define what greater than and less than means.
Students should be able to use the correct symbol when comparing numbers. Then, they should be able
to write an appropriate sentence when presented with a comparison equation.

Required Materials: Word document, PowerPoint presentation, web browser, Starfall.com, Comparing
Numbers handout and worksheet

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Start the lesson by opening the EDU 214 Comparing Pictures Word document
and look at the pictures within the document. Have the class tell you which objects are bigger or
smaller. This will warm up the student’s minds to start thinking about bigger and smaller, which
correlates with greater than and less than.

Step-By-Step Procedures:

1. Open the Word document called EDU 214 Comparing Pictures, then discuss size comparisons
with the class
2. After discussing size comparisons, open the PowerPoint presentation called EDU 214 Comparing
Numbers
3. Review information within the EDU 214 Comparing Numbers PowerPoint
4. When Let’s Review appears in the PowerPoint, navigate to Starfall.com, select Kindergarten
Math, then select Comparing Numbers
5. When the game is complete, return to the PowerPoint and complete the presentation
6. Advise about related classwork and discussion board assignment within Canvas

Plan For Independent Practice: Students will access ABCYa.com either from school or from home to
practice their comparing skills. The title of the game they should search for is Comparing Number Values
Jr. The URL to access the specific activity is here:
https://www.abcya.com/games/comparing_number_values_jr

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Students will fill out the discussion board in Canvas to explain in their
own words what they learned in the lesson.

Assessment Based on Objectives: A worksheet will be given to the students to fill out as a class
assignment.

Possible Connections to Other Subjects: Discussion of size can relate to shapes and measurements.
