The two schools I chose to compare were Paul Culley Elementary School, located between Summerlin and North La
Vegas, and Grant Bowler Elementary School, located in Logandale.
I was able to locate Per Pupil expenditures, which I entered into the Instruction $% field as it was the only figure I co
find on finances for the schools. I know it is not a percent, but it was the best I could find. I also combined the total
number of long term substitutes with the Alternate Licensed Teachers for my total of Not Highly Qualified number.
Culley ES had 200 more students enrolled in their school than Grant Bowler ES. The Per Pupil spending was roughly
more at Grant Bowler ES than Culley ES. The not highly qualified numbers were similar, 9 at Culley ES and 6 at Gran
Bowler ES. In terms of Ethnicity, the breakdowns are very different, with Culley ES having a majority of their studen
in the Hispanic category and Grant Bowler ES having the majority of their students in the White category. There is n
much diversity at Grant Bowler ES as there is at Culley ES. The number of students on IEP's at Culley ES is 125 while
Bowler ES has 83. ELL students wildly vary with Grant Bowler ES having 10 and Culley ES having 352. Students who
qualified were also very different, with the entire student body at Culley ES qualifying and only 125 students at Gra
Bowler ES qualifying.
The enrollment numbers did not surprised me. I was expecting Culley ES to be higher than Grant Bowler ES. In look
the total spent per pupil, $480 seems like a big gap. I'm actually surprised that the gap isn't bigger and that Grand B
ES is spending more than Culley ES. Although it doesn't seem like the numbers of Not Highly Qualified Teachers are
deal, I was not expecting to see Grant Bowler ES close to Culley ES. With Grant Bowler ES having 200 less students,

I was not surprised by the breakdown of student ethnicity. With Logandale being on the outskirts of Clark County, I
assumed they would have a less diverse group of kids. I was, however, surprised by the huge difference in the Engli
Language Learners. Over 40% of Culley ES being language learners definitely makes the school less advantaged. Thi
believe, is what really separates the schools. This means that each class at Culley ES will have roughly 10 ELL studen

It's possible that those students are getting more assistance because there is less overall, but that may not be the c

the student body size. I suspect that these numbers are not accurate, though (should probably be higher). Just a gu

The free lunch numbers may not be accurate today, but I do know that Culley ES is a Title 1 School, so pretty much
kids are low income. I suspect that Grant Bowler ES is not a Title 1 school and their median income may be greater.
It's hard to determine which school is "better," but if I had to make a conclusion based on these numbers, I would h
guess that Grant Bowler ES would be the better school. With less ELL students and a higher dollar per pupil amount
resources may be more accessible there. It's really hard to say though. As for whether or not this made a difference
me, it actually did. Seeing the large number of ELL students at Culley ES made me really think about our textbook an
how it talks about the need for more ethnic teachers. We should really have more Spanish speaking teachers to hel
the ELL students. I don't even know if teachers are allowed to teach in Spanish at schools other than when you are
it as a "Foreign" language. Learning about the large divide in student and teacher ethnicity makes me feel like I can
anything to help since I am not a teacher of color. I could try to learn Spanish, but I don't know if I could become flu
