This statue was hastily constructed in just 4 days out of foam and papier-mâché
over a metal armature. It was made as large as possible to discourage its removal
but the 33 ft tall statue stood for only 5 days before being destroyed. Today, several
replicas of this statue have been erected worldwide. Shown is an installation in
Washington D.C and an award fashioned after this statue.
Identify the place where the original statue was installed and what it was
supposed to symbolize.

This is a 1889 statue called the Gallaudet memorial by Daniel Chester French, an
American sculptor. It depicts an incident involving Gallaudet and the nine year old
daughter of his neighbour. French went on to sculpt a much more famous 1922
sculpture which shares a subtle structural similarity with the 1889 sculpture.
French had a son with the same affliction as the girl in the 1889 sculpture which
makes it likely that the symbolism was very much intentional.
What is the 1922 sculpture and what symbolic similarity?

Gallaudet founded the American School for the Deaf after interacting with his neighbour’s
daughter Alice who was deaf. There is a theory that Lincoln’s hands are signalling his
initials using the American Sign Language (ASL)

This is Statue of Humanity, a 98 ft tall statue in the district of Kars that depicts two
halves of a man, each reaching out to hold the other’s hand. It was commissioned
by the mayor of Kars as a gesture of reconciliation between two long feuding
neighbouring countries following the 2009 Zurich Protocols that reopened
diplomatic relationships between them. The statue was intentionally built on the
border and was made tall enough to be visible from the neighbouring country.
Unfortunately, the statue was demolished on the orders of the country’s prime
minister who denounced it on aesthetic grounds and on Islamic strictures against
idolatry. This was widely seen as attempt to stir up nationalist sentiments in the
run-up to the 2011 general elections which he won comfortably.
Identify the PM, the two feuding countries and the reason behind the tensions.
