Background
Transpor1 Canada has been advised that during a ground run after maintenance of an AS
350 the pilot performed preflight check to verify proper functioning of the flight control
system. The hydraulic system was shut off and the controls cycled to ensure that all
hydraulic pressure provided by the servo accumulators was depleted During this preflight
check after the accumulators were depleted, the cyclic control moved uncommanded to
an extreme left position. Considerable force was required to even move the cyclic. The
uncommanded movement was repeatable A SAMM servo actuator has been isolated as
ttie cause and removed for fur1her investigation.
The Transponatlon Safety Board of Canada is also currently investigating a fatal accident
Involving an AS350 where there was an apparent loss of control after a reported
hydraulics failure. The accident rotorcraft was equipped with Dunlop Servos.
Tran~r1 Canada considers that the changes apply to AS 350 rotorcraft equipped with
SAMM or Dunlop Servos.
That All AS350 Operators inform all flight crew to perform a thorough preflight check and
ensure that the accumulator hydraulic pressure is depleted and verified for any unusual
force or movement of the controls. Investigate the cause of uncommanded movement
thoroughly prior return to service. Any Irregularities need to be repor1ed to Continuing
Alrwor1hiness Branch, Transport Canada.
That the aircrafl be landed as soon as possible after a hydraulics failure to mitigate
extended utilization In manual mode
Limitations -Section 2.1, page 7, paragraph 15 -Add "Switching the Hydraulics Off
in-flight for training or any other purpose, except in accordance with approved emergency
procedures" after "The following are prohibited:"
Emergency Procedures -Section 3.2, page 3, paragraph 41 (In Hover) -Add "Land as
soon as possible" after ".collectlve pitch control lever"
Emergency Procedures -Section 3.2, page 3, paragraph 4.1 (In Cruising Flight) -Add
"Land as soon as possible" after "...collective pitch control lever"
Emergency Procedures -Section 3.3, page 2, HYD (In Flight) -Add "Land as soon as
possible"
Emergency Procedures -Section 3.3, page 2, HYD (In Hover) -Add "Land as soon as
possible"
Normal Procedures -Section 4.1, page 5, Hydraulic Accumulator Check -Add "Continue
to move the cyclic along both axes separately until the accumulator pressure has been
exhausted (control force increases as for normal boost-Qff flight), verify that the cyclic
does not move without pilot input and It can be returned to the center with forces that are
consistent with normal boost-off flight" after "Move the cyclic stick absence of control
load."
Normal Procedures -Section 4.1, page 5, Hydraulic Pressure Isolation Check -Add
"Verify that the cyclic does not move without pilot input and it can be returned to the
center with forces that are consistent with normal boost off flight." after "Isolate hydraulic
pressure by.. load-compensatlng servo."

6 AFTERSTARTING .
WhennlXninal speed is reached, check that all warning, caution and advisory
lights are off, that pressure readings are O.K. Test the hydraulic
accumulators with the collective lever locked at full low pitch.
Whencontrol loads are felt, move the cyclic stick grip 3-4 cm (at the
.
handle) to evaluate the load, then center the stick (no load) and restore
pressure.
If operating loads are considered higher than at normal temperatures, move
the cyclic stick 3-4 cm forward (nose-down) for 2 minutes to warm up the
spherical thrust bearings.
Move the yaw pedals about 50%of their travel range on either side of the
mid-position.
-7 IN CASE
OF ENGINE
FAILURE
Following an engine failure at light weight, the stabilized rotor speed may
be below the audio warning threshold: the pilot can switch off the horn
using the relevant push-button.
S AFTER
lAST FLIGHT
OF THEDAY
-Observe the general recommendationsmentioned above.
-When the rotor stops rotating, place the cyclic pitch stick close to the
neutral position and the collective pitch lever locked at full low pitch,
with tail rotor blades in the horizontal position.
-Care must be taken not to leave doors open.
-Install the air intake cover and exhaust nozzle blank.
.
-When the aircraft is parked in an unsheltered area it is recommendedto
apply anti-icing materials and to carry out aircraft parking and
mooring.

1. GENERAL (unapproved)
The optional Cargo Pods rSQUIRREL CHEEKS)" are an enlargement of the lH and I or
RH cargo compartments.
The volume ot the normal baggage compartment with no cargo pods installed is 7.1 cubic
feet on the right side with the battery in the basic helicopter configuration, and B.3 cubic
feet on the left side.
With installation of the Cargo Pods rSQUIRREL CHEEKS") on each side, the baggage
compartment volume is almost doubled (right side 14.1 cubic feet, left side 15.3 cubicfeet).
With the Cargo Pods ("SQUIRRELCHEEKS"') installed, the RH cargo compartment can
carry up to 175 kg (386 Ib), and the LH compartment can carry up to 195 kg (430 Ib). They'
are constructed with a reinforced aluminium floor with no lip at the door for easier loading.
The Cargo pod floor and top can be stood upon by maintenance personnel.
The Cargo Pods have large doors that are hinged to open in the forward direction, with gas

b) A vertical plane perpendicular to the cabin floor datum. This Y
datum plane is the aircraft plane of symmetry. Dimensions to the
left (port) are negative, dimensions to the right (starboard)
are positive.
c) A vertical plane perpendicular to the two mentioned above, situated
3.40 m (133.8 in.) forward of the centre of the main rotor. This is
the X datum plane, from which the longitudinal reference stations
and CG positions are measured.
The cabin floor datum is materialized by the surface of the cabin floor.

4 CG CHARTS
~~~Wing charts (metric units and Imperial units) are used to easily .
know the aircraft centre-of-gravity. Whenthe point obtained is close to
the limits, it should be confirmed by calculations.
These charts are designed so that the variations in the fuel weight make
CG move along a vertical line.
The AS 350 can be fitted with servos produced by two suppliers, SAMMand
Dunlop. The servos are interchangeable, but have some differences.
Dunlop Servos -Dunlop main rotor lateral servos do not include an input
locking device, and are not subject to asymmetric switching from
unpowered (bypass) mode to powered mode. Small cyclic movement may occur
when switching from powered to unpowered (bypass) and vice versa.
3 NORMALOPERATIONS
At start-up. hydraulic pressure is nil and the HYD warning light is lit on
the caution and warning panel.
The hydraulic pump operates as soon as the rotor is spinning. When the
pressure in the circuit is between 20 and 30 bar (290 psi and 435 psi) the
HYD warning 1igh~ must go out.
The regulating valves regulate the pressure at 40 bar! 2 (580 psi! 29).
The hydraulic warning light is out.
The maximumforces the pilot will have to exert on the controls in order
to maintain aircraft attitude are approximately:
-lateral cyclic 15 daN (33 Ibs) left or right.
-longitudinal cyclic 17 daN (37 lbs) forward.
Although these forces are high, they are generally found at the extremes
of the speed envelope. The pilot can reduce the required force inputs by
COMPLEMENTARY FLIGHT MANUAL
SECTION 8.4
.DAIL~~;~: CHECKS
THE EXTERNAL AIRCRAFT INSPECTIONS (to be performed before each flight) and the
INSPECTION ASSOCIATED WITH THE DAY'S FLIGHTS must be conducted by a person
qualified for performing maintenance or by a pilot having undertaken suitable
training (*), refer to SECTION 4.
.
During daily inspections, in the event of doubt or if a defect is identified,
the pilot must report to the person in charge of maintenance for the action
to be taken. The acceptance criteria for defects on the items checked during
daily inspections are described in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual.
1.1 General
This inspection is to be performed once only either after the last flight
of the day or before the first flight of the next day of flying.
The inspection associated with the day's flights enables the aircraft to
be maintained in a condition suitable for performing another day of
flying. This consists in performing a visual or tactile check of the
condition of a component, or of an assembly, in order to detect any
.
defects which may be detrimental to its correct operation without
recourse to special techniques or tooling.
Record the total number of Ng and Nf cycles performed during the day,
in the pilot's log-book.
In the event that the inspection associated with the day's flights is
performed immediately before a new day of flying, it replaces the
external aircraft inspections to be performed before each flight,
providing that it is performed by the same person.
.
-Perform an inspection associated with flights of the day before
resuming flying.
-Wipe the servocontrol piston rods with a cloth impregnated with
operating fluid before moving the flight controls.
SKI INSTALLATION
l~
The ski installation is designed for takeoff or landing on normal or
snow-covered ground.
2 DESCRIPTION
The skis are secured to the pads via clamps. SEFA skis have a glass-fiber/
. resin laminate structure and SURFAIR skis have a metal structure.
The rear spatula of the ski is reinforced with one or twO struts.
SURFAIR skis enable 4 pairs of Alpine skis to be carried.
