INTRODUCTION
Fruit flies are considered as a major pest of fruit and vegetable crops throughout the world.
Within the Afrotropical region, the genus Ceratitis McLEAY with 88 species currently
recognised, is considered as one of the most important groups, attacking a wide variety of exotic
commercia l and indigenous wild fruits. However, so far only the widespread mediterranean fruit
fly, Ceratitis capitata (WIEDEMANN) has been the subject of a world wide study on host plant
range (LIQUIDO et al., 1998). Recently a number of host plant lists were published for fruit flies
from the Oriental and Australian regions (ALLWOOD et al., 1999; HANCOCK et al., 2000;
TSURUTA et al., 1997) and one for Anastrepha records from the Neotropical region is
forthcoming (NORRBOM, pers. comm.). Very little attention has been paid to host surveys on the
African mainland or adjacent islands despite the presence of some majo r polyphagous pests like
the medfly (Ceratitis capitata), the Natal fruit fly (Ceratitis (Pterandrus) rosa KARSCH), and the
mango fruit fly (Ceratitis (Ceratalaspis) cosyra (WALKER» . Only WHITE & ELSON-HARRIS
(1992) summarised host plant records for the major pests and QUlLICI & JEUFFRAULT (2001)
recently provided an annotated and illustrated checklist for the islands Mauritius, Reunion and the
Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.
With recent taxonomic revisions of all representatives of the genus Ceratitis published or
finalised (DE MEYER, 1996, 1998, 2000; DE MEYER & COPELAND, 2001; DE MEYER &
FREIDBERG, in prep.), a clear recognition of species within this group is now possible. These
revisions have shown that several of the previous records on host plants were based on erroneous
identifications of the flies.
Within the framework of the African Fruit Fly Initiative (AFFI), a programme co-ordinated by S.
Lux at the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (Nairobi, Kenya), several
projects were undertaken to broaden our knowledge of host plant range for African fruit flies.
This has lead us to undertake the present annotated checklist. We aim at bringing together all
presently known host records for the representatives of the genus Ceratitis, based on recent
surveys, collection specimens, literature records and unpublished notes. The geographic scope of
the present list is all records for the Afrotropical region in the zoogeographical sense (i.e. the
African continent south of the Sahara, excluding the Mediterranean region, but including the
adjacent islands of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
The present list is based on a relational database developed by M. DE MEYER, that comprises all
collection and literature data for the genus Ceratitis in Africa. This includes all available
information associated with particular specimens or literature references like locality and date of
collecting, collector, sex of specimen, collection depository, associated literature records, host
plant (if known) and association with relation to collecting effort (reared, found on, or other
associations), as well as any additional information (collecting reference numbers, lures, trap
type, habitat description when given, etc.). At the time of writing, this database comprises more
than 4000 block records, representing over 12000 specimens. Furthermore, these records are
linked to approximately 750 localities, and 350 associated host-plants. Forty-nine percent of the
entered block records have host-plant data associated with them, representing host-plants for 70%
of the known Ceratitis species.
9
An extensive amount of these data is based upon recent surveys in Kenya undertaken by R.
COPELAND, as part of USAID and USDA projects, funded throu gh Texas A&M University. In
total 2004 collections (480958 fruits) were collected from 518 plant species, representing 88
families (COPELAND et al., in press). Twenty-seven percent of the collections produced tephritids.
Additional records were obtained through a rearing survey from mangoes (Mangife ra indica L.)
by AFFI/ICIPE and by a collaborative trappin g programme by AFFI/ICIPE and the Royal
Museum for Central Africa in several African countries (co-ordinated by S. LUX, M. DE MEYER
and N. ZENZ).
For older records , specimens from the collections of the following institutions were studied, and
their holding s are completely or largely included in the database:
10
The majority of these collection specimens were verified by M. DE MEYER. Additional parts were
verified by M. MANSELL and 1. WHITE (visit to NMBZ; part of holdings of BMNH and PPRl).
Special attention was given to the voucher specimens still present in collections of BPBM, PPRl
and USNM with regard to the USDA financed expeditions of 1935-36 and 1948-51 to Africa in
search of natural enemies of the mediterranean fruit fly (BIANCHI & KRAUSS, 1936, 1937; VAN
ZWALUWENBURG & MCGOUGH, 1936; CLAUSEN et al., 1965). These expeditions yielded a wealth
of information on hosts for several Ceratitis species but part of the older identifications turned
out to be erroneous and are corrected here.
In addition literature records that could not be confirmed are also included in the database. All
available records are presented. Since several of them could be questionable or unusual, the data
are grouped in a number of categories . Two main categories are recognised with in total five
different subcategories (indicated by a capital letter A,B,C,D or E):
Reared material: only records that are with certainty based on reared material (i.e. material from
the recent surveys) or for which it is explicitly and unambiguously indicated (in the literature or
on the specimen label) that it was obtained through rearing.
A: reared material, that was seen and for which the identification was checked by at least one of
the co-authors (in most cases M. DE MEYER, M. MANSELL or 1. WHITE). We include here also all
rearing records for Mauritius, Reunion and the Seychelles that were listed by QUILICI &
JEUFFRAULT (2001).
B : reared material, that was not verified by any of the co-authors (i.e. no specimens seen) but for
which the identification was deemed reliable (i.e. published records by known specialists).
C : reared material, that could not be verified and for which the identification might be
questionable (e.g. studies such as those by BIANCHI & KRAUSS (1936) for which only a portion of
the voucher specimens could be located, and at least some of these specimens were misidentified;
some records in LEPELLEY (1959), etc.)
Associated specimens: this includes all records based on casual observations of a fly found
resting on a particular plant or any other association like collected with lure traps in the vicinity
of a certain plant, etc. Also included are those records for which the record of the host plant was
ambiguous, i.e. when it could not be concluded with certainty whether the material was reared or
not.
D: associated material for which the identification was checked or deemed reliable
E: associated material that could not be verified and for which the identification might be
questionable.
For all subcategories B to E, the record is accompanied by an annotation discussing the origin of
the record and its status (these annotations are only given in English). Confirmation in the above
cases only means confirmation of the fly species, not of the host. For the latter we had to rely on
the names provided in the literature or on the specimen labels (except for material collected
11
through the recent surveys mentioned above, for which voucher specimens of the host plants
were collected and identification verified by specialists).
Records based on a single specimen are indicated with an ,*, next to the code for the category.
This is only done for records of the category 'A', hence the reared material that could be
confirmed (unless it was taken from an unconfirmed reference that clearly indicates it concerns
single specimen record). Literature records that proved to be erroneous, as a result of our
examination of material on which they were based, are not repeated in the lists.
The data are presented in two main sections. Section 1 comprises a list according to the fly
species. This list is fully annotated and also categorises records according the country of origin.
This to allow any study for geographical variation in host range for a given species. Each record
line is given an unique reference number. Section 2 lists the same data by plant species (ordered
per family). The country information is omitted here and only the 'highest' category is given.
Also the annotations are not repeated but the unique reference numbers are included for
categories B-E allowing cross reference to the first section. A third section lists alphabetically
the generic names of the host plants, with reference to the family they belong to.
For the fly names the revisions of DE MEYER (1996, 1998, 2000), DE MEYER & COPELAND
(2001) and DE MEYER & FREIDBERG (in prep) are followed. We refer the reader to these works
for notes on synonymy and priority of names within the genus Ceratitis. At the end of the list, we
include 10 species new to science and hitherto undescribed. They will be included in the revision
of the subgenus Pteran drus (DE MEYER & FREIDBERG, in prep) and are listed here with a two
letter code. For generic plant names in current use and their higher ranking (family level) we
largely follow BRUMMITT (1992) and MABBERLEY (1997). Otherwise botanical nomenclature
follows largely the Missouri Botanical Garden database "W3TROPICOS" and the International
Plant Names Index database.

F
INTRODUCTI ON
mouches. Dans Ie cadre de l'African Fruit Fly Initiative (AFFI), programme coordonne par S.
Lux Ii I' International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE, Nairobi Kenya),
R . COPELAND, dans Ie cadre de projets de I'USAID et de I'USDA, finances par Ie biais de la
Texas A&M University.
AFFI I ICIPE et Ie

PELLEY (1959), etc.).
