Intergraph Smart® Instrumentation External Editor

Intergraph Smart® Instrumentation External Editor enables an external party (contractor,
engineering company, and so forth) to modify your instrument specifications outside of Smart
Instrumentation. In External Editor, you can open instrument specification sheets and modify
them as needed. You can then import these files back into Smart Instrumentation for further
processing.
External Editor supports .psr and .isf file formats. It is not possible to work with new .psr
spec files that users can create in Smart Instrumentation. If you upgraded the Smart
Instrumentation database from a version where you used .psr spec files, you can open
an old .psr spec file in the current version of External Editor, change the data as
required, and then save the file in .isf format. Such .isf files are fully compatible with
Smart Instrumentation Version 7.
In External Editor, you can only work with specifications whose item type is Instrument.
External Editor does not support export of data for composite specifications.

Editing Specifications
The following section contains topics connected to editing specifications.
Working with External Editor Common Tasks

To modify data in specification sheets using the External Editor, use one of the following
procedures:
Edit a Single-Tag Specification
Edit a Multi-Tag Specification
Edit a Single-Tag Specification

1. Click File > Open.
2. From the Files of type list, do one of the following:
Select Spec files (*.isf).
Select .psr files.
3. Navigate to the Smart Instrumentation specification file that you want to edit, and click
Open.
4. Click inside each field that you want to edit and do one of the following, as available:
Type a new entry, or edit the existing data.
Select values from available lists.
If you click the unit of measure fields for Pressure Max and Oper., select
values from the Select Unit of Measure dialog box that opens.
5. Do one of the following:
Click File > Save. This option is available only if you loaded an .isf file.
Click File > Save As, and in the dialog box that opens, change the existing file
name or type a new name, and then click Save.
The tag number field is never enabled for editing in External Editor. If additional fields
that you need to edit are disabled, see Protect Fields Before Exporting Specs to
External Editor in the Smart Instrumentation Help.
If you are editing a file with the older .psr suffix, the software automatically converts it to
.isf format upon saving. To perform this conversion in batch mode, see Convert a Batch
of Specification Files to ISF Format.
Edit a Multi-Tag Specification

1. Click File > Open.
2. From the Files of type list, select Spec files (*.isf).
3. Navigate to the Smart Instrumentation specification file that you want to edit, and click
Open.
4. Edit the numbered pages containing the fields that are identical for all of the tags.
5. Click in each field that you want to edit and do one of the following, as available:
Type a new entry, or edit the existing data.
Select values from available lists.
If you click the unit of measure fields for Pressure Max and Oper., select
values from the Select Unit of Measure dialog box that opens.
6. To edit the fields that differ from tag to tag, click the Multi-Item List tab.
Click File > Save. This option is available only if you loaded an .isf file.
Click File > Save As, and in the dialog box that opens, change the existing file
name or type a new name, and then click Save.
The tag number field is never enabled for editing in External Editor. If additional
fields that you need to edit are disabled, see Protect Fields Before Exporting Specs to
External Editor in the Smart Instrumentation Help.
Manufacturer and Model Tables Common Tasks

You can add and edit manufacturers and models to the Instrument Manufacturer and
Instrument Model supporting tables. These manufacturers and models are available when
you edit specifications in External Editor. When you open and then save an externally edited
specification file in Smart Instrumentation, the new manufacturers and models are added to
the relevant supporting tables within Smart Instrumentation. To manage manufacturer and
model tables, use the following procedures:

1. Open a specification file in External Editor.
2. Click Edit > Instrument Manufacturer.
3. Click New.
4. Under Manufacturer, type the name of the new manufacturer and click OK.

A number of options are available for printing specification sheets using External Editor.

You can print specification sheets from External Editor one at a time. For more information,

You can print one or more specification sheets from a command prompt without opening
External Editor. For more information, see Print Instrument Specification Files from a

You can print specification sheets without printing the accompanying note pages. This option
is available from External Editor or from a command prompt. For more information, see Print

1. Access a DOS command line in one of the following ways:
Activate an application that offers you a command prompt option.
On the Windows Taskbar, click Start > Run.
2. From the command line, type the path to the External Editor, type externaleditor, and
leave a space.
3. Type the path, if necessary, and the name (<file name>.isf) of the files that you want to
print, making sure that you leave a space between each file name.
4. Type /p.

1. Click File > Preferences.
2. On the General tab, clear Print ISF note page.

The following service operations are available:
Convert a Batch of Specification Files to ISF Format
You can convert .psr specification files to the .isf format in batch mode. Converting them to
.isf adapts these older specification files for Smart Instrumentation Version 7.0. External
Editor supports multi-tag specifications in .isf format only. For more information, see Convert
a Batch of Specification Files to ISF Format.
Convert a PSR File to ISF
It is possible to convert a specific .psr file to .isf format so that you can edit the spec in
External Editor. For more information, see Convert a PSR File to ISF.
Mark Changes on the Screen
External Editor offers you various options to keep track of changes that you make in a
specification sheet that you are editing. You can choose a color to mark the changes on a
color monitor and you can specify a font style (bold, italic) to show the changes on a monitor
and in print. For more information, see Mark Changes on the Screen.
Set Display Accuracy
You can set the percentage accuracy for the display of numerical data in the specification files
that you open in External Editor. For more information, see Set Display Accuracy.
Set the Interface Language
You can change the interface language from English to other languages supported by
External Editor. For more information, see Set the Interface Language
Convert a Batch of Specification Files to ISF Format

1. Click File > Batch Conversion.
2. In the Source folder text box, do one of the following:
Type the path and name of the folder containing your source files.
Click , and navigate to the folder.
3. Do one of the following to set the target folder:
Select Target folder same as source.
Clear Target folder same as source, click , and navigate to the folder.
4. Do one of the following to select the files that you want to convert to .isf format:
In the data window, under Select, select the check box beside each file.
To convert all of the displayed files, select the Select all check box.
Convert a PSR File to ISF

1. Open the .psr file you want to convert.
2. Click File > Save As.
3. In the Select File dialog box, accept the default file name or type a new name.
4. Click Save.

2. On the Mark Changes tab, select Mark changes.
3. Under Style, select Regular, Italic, Bold, or Bold Italic.
4. From the Color list, select a color of your choice.
To vary the color that you selected, type new values in the Red, Green, and Blue
spin boxes.
5. Click OK or another tab.
Set Display Accuracy

2. On the General tab, in the Numeric field accuracy list, select the required percentage
accuracy for displaying data.
3. Click OK or another tab.
Although the accuracy that you choose influences the number of decimal places
displayed, this influence varies with the order of magnitude of the value. For example, if you
select 10% accuracy, a value of 0.456789 is displayed as 0.46, and a value of 456.789 is
displayed as 457. If you select 0.1% accuracy, the first value is displayed as 0.4568 and the
second value as 456.8.
Set the Interface Language

2. On the General tab, under Select language, select Enable translation.
3. Under Select language, select the language of your choice, and click OK.
Windows and Dialog Boxes

The following section contains topics about the various windows and dialog boxes used by
the External Editor.
Batch Conversion Dialog Box

You use this dialog box to convert .psr specification files to .isf format in batch mode.
Source files
Source folder — Type the path and folder of the .psr files that you want to convert to .isf
format. You can also click to open the Browse for Folder dialog box, where you navigate
to the source folder.
Data Window
Select — Select to include the file beside this check box in the batch conversion.
File name — Displays the names of the .psr files in the source folder.
Select all — Select to include in the batch conversion all of the tags displayed in the data
grid.
Target files
Target folder — Type the path to the folder where External Editor saves the files it converts
to .isf format. If you selected Target folder same as source, or if you clicked to navigate
to the target folder, this box displays the path and folder name.
Target folder same as source — Select to copy the path and folder name from the Source
folder box to the Target folder box.
Overwrite target files without prompting — Select to enable overwriting of target files
without prompting for approval of each file to be overwritten.
Smart Instrumentation External Editor Window

From the External Editor window, you can open specification sheets for viewing and editing.
You can also access the options for batch conversion of the specification format and for
setting preferences. The window consists of the following sections:
Menu Bar — Provides access to available commands.
Toolbar — Provides access to the most common commands by clicking icons.
Editing Area — Displays the specification sheet that you opened for editing.
Status Bar — Shows the current status or the pertinent Microhelp.
External Editor Window Menu Bar

File Menu
Open — Opens a specification sheet for editing.
Close — Closes the active file.
Batch Conversion — Opens the Batch Conversion dialog box to convert .psr files to .isf
format.
Save — Saves the active file, replacing the previously saved version of the same file name.
This option is not available for .psr files.
Save As — Saves the active file under a new name. If this is a .psr file, the software converts
it to an .isf file.
Print — Prints the current file.
Printer Setup — Opens the Printer Setup dialog box, where you can select a printer and
view the properties for the printer that you have selected.
Preferences — Opens the Preferences dialog box.
Exit — Closes External Editor.
Edit Menu
Instrument Manufacturer — Opens the Instrument Manufacturer dialog box to add or edit
manufacturer names.
Instrument Model — Opens the Instrument Model dialog box to add or edit instrument
model names.
Window Menu
Tile Vertical — Sets all non-minimized editing windows side- by-side.
Tile Horizontal — Sets all non-minimized editing windows visible from the top to the bottom
of the screen.
Layer — Sets one window filling the screen, with the others underneath.
Cascade — Sets all non-minimized windows with title-bars visible.
(File names) — Displays the names of all files that are open for editing.
External Editor Window Toolbar

— Opens a specification sheet for editing.
— Exits External Editor.
— Closes the active file.
— Saves the active file, replacing the previously saved version of the same file name.
— Prints the specification file.
— Opens the Instrument Manufacturer dialog box to add or edit the name of a
manufacturer.
— Open the Instrument Model dialog box to add or edit the name of a model associated
with a manufacturer.
— Displays context-sensitive help.
Instrument Manufacturer Dialog Box

By default, this dialog box displays the contents of the Instrument Manufacturer dialog box
in Smart Instrumentation. You can add manufacturers and edit their names as needed. You
can then assign models to the manufacturers and use these manufacturers and models in the
specifications that you edit and save in External Editor. If you then import and save the
revised specification data back into Smart Instrumentation, the manufacturers and models
from the specifications are automatically added to the appropriate supporting tables in Smart
Instrumentation.
Manufacturer — Displays the names of available instrument manufacturers. You can edit
current manufacturers and create new ones.
Delete — Delete a manufacturer that you added from External Editor. Note that you cannot
delete a manufacturer that was created in Smart Instrumentation.
Instrument Model Dialog Box

By default, this dialog box displays the contents of the Instrument Model dialog box in Smart
Instrumentation. You can add models made by the instrument manufacturers and edit their
names as needed. You can use these models in the specifications that you edit and save in
External Editor. If you then import and save the revised specification data back into Smart
Instrumentation, the manufacturers and models from the specifications are automatically
added to the appropriate supporting tables in Smart Instrumentation.
Manufacturer — Select a manufacturer from the list.
Delete — Delete a model that you added from External Editor. Note that you cannot delete a
model that was created in Smart Instrumentation.
Preferences Dialog Box

The two tabs of this dialog box allow you to set and change Preferences.
General Tab

General Tab (Preferences Dialog Box)

On this tab, you set the level of accuracy for display of specification sheets, specify the
interface language, and set printing options.
Numeric field accuracy — Select a percentage value from this list to determine the level of
accuracy for display of specification sheets. Although the accuracy that you choose
influences the number of decimal places displayed, this influence varies with the order of
magnitude of the value. For example, if you select 10% accuracy, a value of 0.456789 is
displayed as 0.46, and a value of 456.789 is displayed as 457. If you select 0.1% accuracy,
the first value is displayed as 0.4568 and the second value as 456.8.
Print ISF note page — Select to include note pages in specifications that you print from
within External Editor or from a command line. Clear to exclude note pages from the printing.
Enable translation — Select to allow an interface other than English.

Mark Changes Tab (Preferences Dialog Box)

On this tab, you set font style and color for indicating changes on specification sheets that you
open in External Editor. If you choose a font style other than Regular, the software also
shows the changes when you print the current sheet. Each time you save and reopen a file,
the software marks new changes only.
Mark changes — Select to mark changes in the current specification sheet.
Color — Marks changes on the screen, but not in printed reports. Select a predefined color
or Custom.
Style — To display changes on the screen and in the printout, select Regular, Italic, Bold, or
Bold Italic as the font style.
Example — Displays a sample sentence in the font style and color that you select.
Custom color — If in the Color box you selected Custom, the three spin boxes allows you to
enter a value between 0 and 255 for each of the primary colors. If you selected a predefined
color, the boxes display the RGB (red, green, blue) component values of this color.

Other Documentation shall mean, whether in electronic or printed form and delivered with
software or on Intergraph Smart Support, SharePoint, box.net, or the Hexagon PPM
documentation web site, any documentation related to work processes, workflows, and best
practices that is provided by Intergraph as guidance for using a software product.
Terms of Use
a. Use of a software product and Documentation is subject to the Software License

Agreement ("SLA") delivered with the software product unless the Licensee has a valid
signed license for this software product with Intergraph Corporation. If the Licensee has
a valid signed license for this software product with Intergraph Corporation, the valid
signed license shall take precedence and govern the use of this software product and
Documentation. Subject to the terms contained within the applicable license agreement,

customized software, Technical Data and/or third-party software obtained from Intergraph
Corporation, its subsidiaries or distributors, should be addressed to PPM’s Export Compliance

Select .psr files.

Type a new entry, or edit the existing data.

Select values from available lists.
