BASICS & COLOR THEORY

Arch’l considerations in color design

Color Illusions and Advanced Scheme Principles

OBJECTIVES
By the end of this lesson, the students shall be able to:
1. To familiarize and understand the basics of color and learn the basics of
color theory to know what looks good;
2. to apply the COLOR THEORIES AND SCHEMES in designing INTERIOR SPACES;
3. To know and understand the color illusions and advanced scheme principles
and apply them in everyday life.

BASICS & COLOR THEORY
ATTRIBUTES OF COLOR
1. HUE – name for the color such as
yellow, blue & red.

COLOR WHEEL represents all the

hues in full intensity.

2. VALUE/LIGHTNESS – refers to
the lightness or darkness of a
color. Lighter values are achieved
by adding white to the color and
darkness results by adding black.

ATTRIBUTES OF COLOR
3. CHROMA/SATURATION – the relative
purity or intensity of a color by how
much or how little gray is added to the
color.
The value of the color on a chroma
should not change, only the intensity of
the colors varies.

: Ar. Christine Mariz C. Gonzales, uap

:
BASICS & COLOR THEORY
ALBERT MUNSELL, a color
theorist, describes each
and every color as having
three dimensions;
therefore to fully
describe a color, it is
necessary to describe each
of the dimensions or
attributes

TINT, SHADE and TONE

TINT – WHITE (PASTELS)

SHADE – BLACK
TONE – GRAY

COLOR TEMPERATURE

1. WARM – red, orange,

yellow

2. COOL – green, blue,

purple

ADDITIVE COLOR
-process of mixing colored
light
 PRIMARY COLORS OF LIGHT
-red, blue, green

 PRIMARY COLORS OF PIGMENT

-red, yellow, blue

lighting

LIGHTER VALUE
WHITE - produced when
- result by adding the combining two of the
three colors primary colors

SUBTRACTIVE COLOR
-result by mixing dyes, pigments or other colorants

PRIMARY SUBTRACTIVE COLORS

- red, yellow, blue

* When all the primary

colors are combined,
the resulting color is
deep, blackish brown.

PARTITIVE COLOR
-derivation of the third color when
viewed from a slight distance when
the eye tends to mix the two colors
