2 SCOPE OF MANUAL
The scope of this manual is to give useful indications about the correct use and
maintenance of the truck.
However, this manual does not replace the specific and operative training of the truck
operator.
The manual must be conserved with care and must always accompany the truck in
changes of destination or ownership.
It must be at the disposal of all who have responsability for the truck and the manual’s
contents must be made known in particular to the truck driver or drivers.

5.1 ELFO 1
The driver is seated in front and side-on to the normal drive of the truck: this enables
him to have maximum visibility, both with and without load.
From his driving position, he can safely reach all truck controls, steering wheel,
accelerator pedal, consent button, gear sense selector, lift/lower forks button, horn,
battery disconnect button.
All controls are laid out in such a way that no part of the driver’s body leans out of the
truck’s perimeter to use them. The seat is equipped with a switch that blocks any
function of the truck if the driver is not correctly seated.
The driver’s position has been conceived to accommodate drivers of different statures
and therefore has the following adjustments available:
• adjustment of steering wheel position;
• adjustment of accelerator pedal;
• adjustment of seat position;
• adjustment of seat backrest;
• adjustment of spring load on the basis of the driver’s weight;
• adjustment of height of front part of seat cushion.
5.2 ELFO 2
The standing driver is positioned in front and sideways to the gear sense of the truck:
this enables him to have maximum visibility both with and without load.
From his drive position he can reach and use safely all the control devices on the
truck, the steering wheel, traction control (butterfly levers), consent pedal, fork lift/lower
buttons, horn button, battery disconnect button.
All controls are laid out in such a way that no part of the driver’s body leans out of the
truck’s perimeter to use them.

6.3 Checks and functional tests before putting truck into service
Qualified personnel must carry out the functional and operative tests as well as
the check ups before and after truck testing.
Make sure that the truck has been delivered all in one piece and has not been
damaged during shipment.
Make sure that it corresponds to the technical specifications and dimensions
requested.
Control that the controls are all suitably identified and that the various rating,
identification and prohibition plates are present and readable.
Make sure that the use and maintenance manual is present and that it corresponds to
the truck model that has been delivered.
Check that the lift chains and also the hydraulic tubes are in the correct position on
their pulleys.
Check that the lift chains are tightened well.
Check the battery connection and if it is fully charged.
Before putting the truck into service, carry out a functional test as described below:
• pick up a test load that corresponds to the maximum capacity of the truck;
• with the load in position, travel forwards slowly, then go into reverse gear and then
forwards again to verify that the gear inversion system functions correctly;
• the test speed must result about 50% of the maximum speed;
• drive the truck forwards and in reverse checking the gradual levels of speed up to
the maximum speed, and check that the service brake works in both gear
directions;
• check the steering mechanism with repeated steering movements forwards and in
reverse at one third of maximum speed: check that the steering movement is made
in the correct direction and in a correct way;
• deposit the load;
• pick up a load from the ground that corresponds to the capacity indicated on the
rating plate, transport it to the deposit area, lift it up to the maximum height and
deposit the load on top of other material or on a rack (see paragraph 9.3 on page
20);
• pick the load up again, lower it, then return to the starting point and deposit the load
(see paragraph 9.3 on page 20).
At the end of the test, the truck must be examined to verify that there are no defects.
If the truck is equipped with special features, this equipment has also to be controlled
very carefully.

7.3.2 ELFO 2
With the truck in a normal working state, press the consent pedal with your left foot
(10, Figure 8), select the drive gear direction by activating the butterfly levers with your
left hand (2, Figure 8): if you push them forwards, reverse gear is inserted (forks
direction), if pushed in reverse, forward gear is inserted (opposite direction to the
forks).
Travelling speed progressively increases, from zero to maximum value depending on
the rotation given to the butterfly levers.
When releasing the levers, the truck starts to brake (energy saving braking) controlled
by the electronic panel; braking increases progressively with the release of the levers.
When releasing the consent pedal, current is cut off from the traction motor and the
electrobrake is automatically inserted: the truck stops even if you keep rotating the
butterfly levers.
When inverting gear direction with the butterfly levers, the truck performs braking in
“countercurrent” and starts off again progressively in the opposite direction.
In forward gear, turning the steering wheel with left hand in a clockwise direction, the
machine steers in a clockwise direction; likewise, if you turn the steering wheel
anticlockwise, the machine steers in an anticlockwise direction.
"
The interruption of fork lift or lowering in any condition (both laden and unladen) must
always be carried out very slowly in order to avoid shaking and jolting of the load and
the truck.
If something exceptional has blocked the descent of the forks and/or the mast, isolate
the truck and contact specialised personnel who will deal with the repair.
Do not try to free the fork, mast or its relative parts by means of the lifting group.
ELFO 2: to lift (3, Figure 8) and lower (4, Figure 8) the forks, press the two buttons, or
use the distributor lever (5, Figure 8).
N.B. Lifting and lowering of the forks, either with or without load, must not be
carried out during truck movement.
7.5 Capacity
The value indicated on the «Identification plate» (2, Figure 2) means the nominal
capacity. The effective capacity values are indicates on the «Rating plate» (1, Figure
2); they vary depending on the lift height, the loadcentre distance and are understood
as being with load evenly distributed and with loadcentre in vertical sense the same or
inferior to the loadcentre in horizontal sense.

10.3 Steering
The steering speed of the drive wheel is proportional to the rotation speed of the
steering wheel.
Electrical end of run signals limit the steering to 90° to the right and 90° to the left.
10.4 Battery disconnect button
This button (1, Figure 7 - 8, Figure 8), well visible on the control box, is the switch that
isolates the battery; if pressed, it interrupts all the functions of the truck.
The battery can also be disconnected by means of a connector (1, Figure 5) placed
under the cover of the battery compartment.
10.5 Brakes
The truck is equipped with an electromagnetic brake (electrobrake) (1, Figure 11) with
passive functioning (with closure springs with electro-traction power missing), that
reacts directly on the motor shaft. It carries out the double function of service and
parking brake.
10.6 Frame
The frame has a very rigid structure constructed in sheet steel.
It has a bonnet (Figure 13) with a large opening for a convenient maintenance of the
electric and hydraulic installations.
A cover that can be opened (3, Figure 5) protects the battery elements, mounted in a
proper container.

10.8 Mast
The truck series ELFO are equipped with masts made of special steel profiles that run
on permanently lubricated roller bearings set out along the longitudinal and transversal
axes.
A strong fork runs on the inside mast by means of rollers set out along the longitudinal
and transversal axes.
The simple effect cylinder (1, Figure 15) lifts the fork carrier plate by means of
FLEYER type chains (2, Figure 15) with high anti-breakage load that wind around
pulleys (3, Figure 15) and its terminals are fixed to links (4, Figure 15), respectively
connected to the fork carrier plate and to the fixed structure of the truck.

10.9.3 Cylinder
A simple effect cylinder with chromed rod; a partial flux valve, incorporated in the base
of the cylinder controls the descent speed of the load even in the event of tube
breakage, for the non telescopic lifting groups.
For the Duplex and Triplex mast groups, in the lifting cylinders there are block valves
present that interrupt the descent in case of tube breakage, whilst in the hydraulic
system a partial flux valve is inserted that controls the descent speed of the group at a
pre-established value.

11 TRUCK MAINTENANCE
The truck’s user must limit himself to the cleaning of the truck, the control of
eventual topping up of hydraulic oil, to the checking and restoring of the battery
charge level and to visual and functional checks described in paragraph 9.1.1 at
page 18.
The truck must undergo functional checks and accurate revisions, according to the
indications of this manual and each time that it is necessary in exceptional
circumstances, by a specialised technician.
A good maintenance is necessary in order to keep the truck in the best working
conditions and durability.
An improper maintenance programme can cause serious damage to the working and
safety of the truck.
Maintenance must be handled by SAMAG service centres; if the intervention is made
by authorised internal personnel, follow carefully the servicing programme.
No intervention must be made on the basis of only experience or superficial knowledge
of the truck.
Replace the damaged or deteriorated components with original SAMAG spare parts.
For request of spare parts, consult paragraph 11.10, “Spare parts”, at page 32.
The first truck servicing must be made after about 50 working hours.
'
The successive programmed interventions are to be carried out every 400 working
hours or at 3 month intervals.
The third servicing phase is required every 800 working hours or anyway every year.
If the truck is used in very dusty conditions, the servicing intervals must be increased
as required.
&
11.4 Battery recharge
Charging the battery must be performed in an appropriate place designated for
that activity and conforming to the laws in effect.
Recharging must be performed with different methods depending on the type of
battery (acid battery or gel). It is, therefore, important to read the instructions provided
by the battery and battery-charger manufacturers before performing this operation.
The battery chargers must be suitable for lead batteries with decreasing charge and
automatic switch-off; their features must be the following:
• ELFO 1: 80 A, 24 V, triphase 230/400 V, for battery 360 Ah
• ELFO 1: 100 A, 24 V, triphase 230/400 V, for battery 500 Ah
• ELFO 2: 40 A, 24 V, single phase 230 V, for battery 240 Ah
• ELFO 2: 50 A, 24 V, single phase 230 V, for battery 315 Ah
• ELFO 2: 80 A, 24 V, triphase 230/400 V, for battery 375 Ah
Before recharging the battery it is necessary to:
• remove the key from the ignition (1, Figure 20);
• remove the battery cover (2, Figure 21) and leave it open for the entire recharging
time;
• disconnect the battery connector (1, Figure 21) and insert it in the battery charger
(3, Figure 21). It is not possible to invert the polarity because the connectors are
irreversible.
• turn on the battery charger.
Before and during recharge, one must not:
• open or remove the fill plugs on the battery cells;
• perform topping up;
• perform repairs on the battery.
With a battery 80% discharged, the recharge time is approximately 10-12 hours.
After recharging, the density value of every cell must be between 1.26 and 1.27 Kg/l,
1.29 e 1.30 Kg/l for batteries with greater capacity.
When recharging is completed, it is necessary to:
• turn off the battery-charger;
• disconnect the battery connector and insert it in the connector plug;
• check and correct the level of the electrolyte inside each cell;
• if necessary, dry the battery and lubricate the terminals with Vaseline grease;
• lower the battery cover (2, Figure 21).

Check that the battery cables and clamps are fixed well and not worn.
Clean and lubricate the clamps and, if necessary, replace the cables.
Check the electrolyte density (see paragraphs 11.3, page 29).
11.13.2 Motors
Check that the traction motor (2, Figure 11) and lifting motor (1, Figure 16 - 1, Figure
17) do not produce strange noises: if necessary contact the SAMAG service centre.
Check that the brushes are in good order.
To remove the dust collected between the brushes and their container, remove the
brushes’ protective strap of each motor and blow in dry compressed air.
Check the brushes’ wear and minimum dimensions: for traction motor 16 mm, for
lifting motor 15 mm.
Check the wear of the container.
Check that the power cables are well connected to the clamps.
11.13.5 Fuses
Check that the fuses have the right amperage and that they are correctly fitted.
Fuses must be replaced, whenever necessary, with others with the same features.
11.13.6 Frame
Check the integrity state of the frame and the load backguard.
Check that the bars which surround the mast are intact and well welded to the said
mast.
11.13.7 Mast
Check that the sliding rollers are not worn and lubricate them with grease.
Check the mast and fork rollers and replace them if they have lost their original state.
Check that each fork and the fork carrier plate are integral and if the fork plate is the
adjustable F.E.M. type that the mechanical block stops are present.
11.13.8 Chain
Check the chains and their relative connections and the lifting pulleys (3, Figure 15).
Register the tension of the lifting chain by using its turn buckles (4, Figure 15).
Replace the chain if the increase of its length goes over the limits indicated in point
11.14, «Every 800 working hours», on page 36.
11.13.9 Brakes
During the truck’s movement, the drive wheel must be completely free.
A graduated ring nut (8, Figure 11) helps regulate the braking intensity.
Turning it in a clockwise direction, the braking will be more intense and in an anti-
clockwise direction, less intense.
With a thickness gauge, check the distance between the magnet and the flange
(Figure 24): if it does not correspond to 0.3 mm, loosen the three screws (1, Figure 24)
that fix the magnet and carry out the registration by means of the three nuts (2, Figure
24).
Block the screws that fix the magnet and remount the rubber ring in its proper place.
N.B.: The ferode does not have substances which can damage your health.

11.13.11 Traction group
In order to lubricate the gearings of the drive unit, use AGIP ROTRA HY DB SAE 80 oil
or similar type.
Check that the fixing screws (4, Figure 11) of the drive wheel to the traction group are
well tightened (tightening couple 150 Nm).
Check that the state of the drive wheel does not effect the truck’s normal functioning
and safety; if this is so, then replace the wheel.
The quality of the wheel influences the machine’s performance; replace them only with
original SAMAG spare parts.

macchina;
meccanismo di inversione del senso di marcia funzioni correttamente;
• la velocità di prova deve risultare circa il 50% della velocità massima;
entrambi i sensi di marcia;
sterzata avvenga nel senso di marcia corretto ed in modo soddisfacente;
• depositare il carico;
9.3 a pag. 21);

“controcorrente” e riparte in senso contrario in modo progressivo.
"
aumenterà progressivamente in funzione dello spostamento esercitato.

9.3.1 Stoccaggio

• sollevare il carrello come indicato al paragrafo 6.1 a pag. 11;
superiore alla larghezza dei longheroni del telaio stesso;

sede.
