EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The ICC Cricket World Cup is one of greatest sporting spectacles in the world. The same presents an
opportunity for driving social change. With BCCI’s commitment to greening the sport (A partnership
to green cricket in India, 2018), there is a potential for energy conservation to play a major role in
slowing down climate change. Keeping this in mind, different opportunity areas were recognized, and
after an analysis of the initiatives taken in the energy sector in the sports domain, different sub-goals
were devised.

Within the target area of ‘Climate and Energy Change’, eight sub-goals were devised which would be
most apt for achieving maximum impact in this target area. Initially, the criterion for the formulation
of these sub-goals were defined and subsequently, the deadlines and budget were set. The sub-goals
have been designed to synergistically ally with each other.

Estimated Total Financial Cost: INR 818 million

As can be seen from the subsequent report, the recommendations of the sub-goals fit perfectly for the
required criteria. They are feasible, have a high impact, they align with the goals of BCCI and are
symmetrically linked with the existing initiatives. As the report would show, the goals chosen cover
the entire domain of the target area and are designed to link with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

The group proposes that the plan be accepted and put to immediate action.

INTRODUCTION

With a record-breaking engagement of more than 2.6 billion fans for the ICC Cricket World Cup
2019 (Media Release:ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 shatters audience records, 2019), the
cricketing community once again proved its influence on the sports industry. More than that, it
exhibited a potential to be a platform for social change. BCCI has shown a penchant to be a leader in
driving social change, as demonstrated in 2016, when the revolutionary ‘Nayi Soch’ campaign
brought gender equality to the forefront of discussion. (Star Plus, BCCI use cricket power for gender
equality, 2016)

Figure 1 : BCCI-backed ‘Nayi Soch’ campaign (Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Ajinkya Rahane wear
jerseys with their mother’s name, 2016)
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will be held entirely in India for the first time since its inception.
The world will be looking at India and this is where BCCI can display its commitment to its pact with
UN Environment to reduce cricket’s environment impact. (A partnership to green cricket in India,
2018)

LITERATURE

The literature review of the web sources provided the group with a deep insight into the energy
conservation techniques employed in cricket and other sports. While relevant information about
power consumption in cricket stadiums was sourced (Zodhya, 2018), so did the efficacy of digital
marketing campaigns to instigate change and create a compelling call to action. (What Can 5 of the
Most Impactful Campaigns Teach Us in 2018?, 2018)

The use of solar energy to power stadiums was an important discovery (Joshi, 2015). The importance
of solar energy cannot be overstated (Five Benefits of Solar Energy on the Environment, 2018).
Additionally, the use of public transit to reduce energy requirements was an important finding and
defined one of the sub-goals for the group.

The other resources, as mentioned in the ‘Introduction’ section, helped the group identify the areas of
interest for BCCI and the subsequent criteria based on which the recommendations have been made.
Some of them were mentioned in this cover story (Bhatia, 2018) where BCCI’s future plans for
greening operations were discussed. Other than that, some interesting answers by the online
community (Jangir, 2018) also shed some light over possible future plans.

METHOD

The group divided the research task into sub-tasks with specific problem statements –

• Greening efforts undertaken in other major sporting events

• Efforts by BCCI to conserve the environment
• Energy-saving efforts in the sports industry
• Efforts already undertaken by BCCI related to climate change

The subsequent research involved the use of web searches for relevant information. News articles and
media releases were consulted. Additionally, the resources were compared, analyzed and the action
plan was drafted.

FINDINGS

It was found that solar panel installation helps in reducing the CO2 emission. They emit 80% less CO2
as compared to fossil fuels. More so, 25% of the electricity bill can be saved. (Five Benefits of Solar
Energy on the Environment, 2018) The Solar project at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium at Bengaluru
has 300 WP and 72 cells, with 20 kW Grid Tie type string inverters evacuated with bi-directional
metering to BESCOM. This helps in reducing 600 tonnes of carbon emissions. (Joshi, 2015)

There has been significant impact on the climate when individuals use their own transportation
instead of public transit. More importantly, the efforts of startups focusing on environment
conservation and clean energy made some of the recommendations made plausible. (Prasad, 2018)

6
ANALYSIS

Post the analysis of the available resources, it was found that there were four broad objectives that
needed to be achieved –

• Calculation & benchmarking of energy requirements and saving estimates for the ICC Cricket
World Cup 2023
• Implementation of clean-energy techniques
• Formulation of a national and international marketing plan to promote clean energy
• Other miscellaneous energy-conserving steps from allied areas

After going through the plans made by other sport committees on similar grounds and their
subsequent performances in the Indian sub-continent, it was found that the above four broad
objectives together summed up the ‘Energy and Climate Change’ target area.

CRITERIA

The defined criteria for the evaluation of the recommendations are –

• Feasibility (financially and time-wise)

• Impact
• Alignment with organization goals
• Synergy with existing initiatives

7

IV. Miscellaneous areas concerning energy conservation

IV.1 Preparing a collaborative plan with other international cricket boards for green energy promotion .

The impact on climatic conditions will be high when we use our individual vehicles instead of public
transport like buses. This is because number of vehicles used for transportation decreases which will
be proportional to carbon emissions.

Subsequently goals to achieve the above will be:

• Preparing a plan to allow only public transport within the stadium premises

Performance Metrics.

• Increase the public transport facility by 10% compared to existing capacity.

• Social media campaign to one million people
