“For human beings, simply put, the default state is happiness.

If you don’t believe me, spend a little time with a human fresh
from the factory, an infant or toddler. Obviously, there’s a lot
of crying and fussing associated with the start-up phase of
little humans, but the fact is, as long as their most basic needs

isolation, no physical pain or enduring sleeplessness—they
live in the moment, perfectly happy.” - M. G.

BIG IDEA #3 MAKE IT PERSONAL

OPTIMIZE YOUR LIFE

We’ll go over a few universal truths and some im-

portant misconceptions—but Mo allows for individ-
ualization. In fact, he encourages it.

Though what often happens is that we don’t take this

very basic step of asking ourselves—what makes me
happy?

It’s important to note, though, that Mo is not talking

about things like “money” or “success” or “fame.”

What he means is—what actually

makes you happy? As in, when you’re
doing this activity, you are happy. Or
better—when you are with this per-
son, you are happy.
Why not be aware of these markers and then opti-
mize your life around them?

them closer. All others don’t matter to you.” - M. G.

BIG IDEA #5 THOUGHTS VS. REALITY

THOUGHTS PERMEATE

This concept is undeniable. The difference

between an event and it lingering in our
brains for days, weeks, months, years, or
decades even—is profound. It’s the differ-
ence between watching a bad movie one
time and forcing yourself to watch that
movie over and over again every day for
the next year.

one, including ourselves. Our assumed identities becomes
our whole lives, and we start to believe them—even more
than others do.” - M. G.

Now—in your immediate life, what was the differ-

grow or decline? Did your relationships change in
the past few moments? Anything traumatic or won-
derful occur? NO! This is because your happiness
or unhappiness has very little to do with reality—
and almost everything to do with your thoughts
about reality.

13

Suffering, on the other hand, is a self-imposed prison

of self-generated pain.

It has no useful purpose. It offers no benefit.

actually happened. But in reality, memories are nothing more
than descriptions of what we think happened.” - M. G.
