1 Product description

1.1 Use for the intended purpose

The pattern control »ICS-IK 4x« is an option for hotmelt applicators with the program ICS-MAIN or
ICS-JUMBO of Robatech and an extension of the standard temperature control. Subject to the technical specifi-
cations (see chapter 2.3) the control is intended for the following applications:

The pattern control ICS-IK 4x permits the activation of up to eight application heads for the application
of hotmelt in different, programmable patterns.

The control ICS-IK is available in four versions for controlling of up to two, four, six or eight application heads
(IK-42, IK-44, IK-46 or IK-48). A multitude of accessories permit to adapt the control ideally to the production
requirements in question (see chapter 11. Accessories, in the manual for the basic appliance).

1.2 Improper use

Any use other than that "for the intended purpose" without the written approval of the manufacturer, or the opera-
tion outside the technical specifications, is deemed to be improper.

1.3 Operating Manual

This manual complements the Operating Manual for the basic Concept  or Jumbo appliance. The information con-
tained in this manual refers to:

The integrated »ICS-IK 4x« pattern controls for hotmelt applicators of Robatech

3 Installation

Danger  Electrocution
Mortal danger exists on touching of live components (operating voltage 400 Volt).
The protective covers may only be removed if the appliance is disconnected from
the power supply.

Wiring of the control may only be carried out by trained personnel, e.g. electrical
fitters. Apart from the information contained in this manual, the generally appli-
cable safety and accident prevention regulations must be observed.

3.1 Remarks before the installation

– Normally, the ICS-IK control is already installed in the basic Concept appliance. Subsequent installation,
however, is also possible. In this case the installation procedure is described in the applicable retrofit manual.

– The complete cabling of the printed circuit board of the pattern control ICS-EXT1 must be effected with
shielded cables. Wrongly connected or unshielded cables may interfere with the functions of the appliance or
influence other devices. Correct wiring is described in chapter 5 of the operating manual for the basic appli-
ance.

– The minimum equipment is a light barrier and an application head that the pattern control functions.

3.3 Signal descriptions

3.3.1 View of ICS-EXT1

3.3.2 Encoder inputs

The encoder serves to measure the speed of the system, for example of the conveyor belt. This measurement
permits to maintain the same glue length and the same glue quantity while the speed varies. No encoder is re-
quired if the transporting speed is constant. In this latter case the speed is determined by the value in parameter
105, vmax. The Robatech encoder generates 1,000 impulses per revolution.

3.3.6 Proportional valve output

Proportional valves convert an electrical signal to an analog pneumatic pressure. They are available as current-
controlled (I/P) and as voltage-controlled (U/P) executions. Their area of application in Robatech equipment is
the closed loop control of the system pressure at pneumatic piston pumps in dependence of the machine speed
measured by means of the encoder. This permits to achieve a constant glue quantity at different speeds.

and comply no longer with current regulations. An EMC-compatible operation is only assured if the cable shield
is connected to the appliance housing (see chapter 5.8.6 in the Operating Manual for the basic appliance).

4 Operation

4.1 Entering of parameters

The basic settings of the ICS-IK4x pattern control are made with the parameters 100…152.

Setting of parameters may only be done by an experienced technician. Wrong en-

tries lead to disturbances or the failure of the appliance.

Saving and loading of the parameter settings and of the programmed glue pat-
terns is described in the manual to the basic unit.

4.1.1 Access blockage

To prevent unintentional or unauthorized alteration of the data, all values can only be altered after the access
blockage has been lifted. On altering of the values the display shows »Loc1« or »Loc2«.

Lifting »Loc1« Lifting »Loc2« Activating the access blockages

Press these keys simultaneously: Press these keys simultaneously: Press these keys simultaneously:

– Lifting Loc2 lifts always Loc1 too.

– The access blockage is activated automatically if no key is actuated within two minutes.

− Data access can also be blocked via a key switch (see manual of the basic unit).

– If the PROFIBUS board is installed, the access blockage  LocE  is displayed. The data input via operating unit
is blocked. To lift LocE  set parameter 400 to OFF  (see also Profibus manual).

ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5 Operation 21

4.1.2 Entering of parameter values

• Select function Parameter with the keys (1)

• Select the parameter number with the keys (2). The

number comes up in the display (3).

• With certain parameters, values must be entered for

each individual application head (also channel).
The desired application head or »A« for all is se-
lected with the keys (4) and displayed in the field
(5).

• Display (6) shows the set parameter value. After

lifting of the access blockage the value can be al-
tered with the keys (7).

4.1.3 Parameter 100: Program number

The application control features over 87 programs for storing application patterns including the parameters. All
inputs always refer to the current program number. The program number is selected with parameter 100. If the in-
terface inputs PROG1…PROG6 of the board ICS-EXT1 are switched on, the program selection is effected over
these inputs (Program selecting see also chapter 4.3). Alteration after lifting of access blockage Loc1.

Input range Function Default

22 Operation ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5

4.1.4 Parameter 101: Switch-on delay time ton

The control compensates the switch-on delay of the electric valves by switching the corresponding solenoid valve
on already before the start of the glue application. The switch-on delay time t on [msec] can be entered for each
application head individually. Alteration after lifting of access blockage  Loc1.

Input range Function Default

0.0…30.0 [msec] Switch-on delay time ton  0.0

4.1.5 Parameter 102: Switch-off delay time toff

The switch-off delay time toff  [msec] can be entered individually for each channel. The control compensates the
switch-off delay in that the corresponding valve is already switched off ahead of the end of the glue application.
Alteration after lifting of access blockage Loc1.

Input range Function Default

0.0…30.0 [msec] Switch-off delay time toff   0.0

Explanation of the function of the switch-on and switch-off delay time

Due to the inertia, all electrical valves feature a constant inherent switching time. The properties of the glue and
the execution of the application head may cause an additional extension of the inherent switching times of the en-
tire application head. These time lags must be compensated under all circumstances to make sure that the applica-
tion pattern corresponds to the programmed distances also at high machine speeds.

1  Effective glue application

2  Switch-on time of the solenoid valve

The following values can be assumed as basic

settings: ton = 6.5 msec / t off   = 7.5 msec

The compensation time can be calculated as follows:

Application of a glue pattern at two different transport speeds.
(Length difference [mm] × 60) : speed difference [m/min] = delay [msec]

ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5 Operation 23

4.1.6 Parameter 103: Glue pressure factor

Only with proportional valve! The value of the speed-proportional analog signal A-OUT (=proportional valve
pressure, glue quantity) can be made weaker or stronger in percent, relative to the maximum speed.
Alteration after lifting of access blockage Loc1.

output value [%] = [glue pressure factor] × (v : vmax)

Input range Function Default

0…200 [%] Glue pressure factor 100

By means of further parameter 120 the glue pressure can be limited to a mini-
mum value.

4.1.7 Parameter 104: Encoder transmission

Channel-related input of the transport length in mm per 1000 encoder impulses. Values up to 999.9 mm are dis-
played in 0.1 mm, greater values with a resolution of 1 mm (watch the decimal point).
If no encoder is used (internal time basis), the encoder transmission of channel 1 must be set to »OFF«. In this
case vmax (Parameter 105) is used as the machine speed for all channels. Alteration after lifting of access block-
age Loc1.

Input range Function Default

OFF No encoder, v = vmax in Parameter 105
1,000
10.0…3,000 [mm] Transport length per 1,000 encoder impulses

All length values are internally converted into encoder impulses. The greater the length
per encoder impulse, the more inaccurate is the path resolution (rounding error).

Robatech encoders (100824) emit 1,000 encoder impulses per revolution. The transport length, therefore, is to be
measured per revolution. If another encoder is used, the transport length has to be converted.

The following procedure can also be adopted if the transport length cannot be measured precisely:
Set an estimated value for the machine speed. Next, use a speed measuring device to determine the exact product
speed while the machine is running. If the measured speed deviates from the speed shown in the control display,
the encoder transmission must be adjusted until the values correspond. If no measuring device is available it is
also possible to compare the set application length with the actual application length (at a very low speed).

4.1.8 Parameter 105: Maximum speed vmax

The maximum admissible speed vmax [m/min] is used in the calculation of the admissible input values. The error
»E103« is displayed if the maximum speed is exceeded. If the encoder transmission (parameter 104) is put on in-
ternal time basis »OFF«, the value v max  is used as the machine speed. Alteration after lifting of access blockage

24 Operation ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5

4.1.9 Parameter 106: Minimum speed vmin

A minimum speed vmin [m/min] can be defined for each channel. If it is fallen short of, the corresponding output
is switched off. Depending on the status of parameter 107 the sequence is cleared or remains stored (-> applica-
tion is resumed on exceeding of the minimum speed). If the minimum speed is put on »0.0«, the corresponding
output remains switched on also in standstill. Alteration after lifting of access blockage Loc1.

Input range Function Default

0.0…150.0 [m/min] Minimum speed vmin  0.0

4.1.10 Parameter 107: Evaluation G-ENABLE and behaviour v < vmin

For each single channel it is possible to define the evaluation of release input G-ENABLE and the behaviour in
case the minimum speed defined in parameter 106 is fallen short of.

off the application head output. Alteration after lifting of access blockage Loc1.

Input range Function Default

OFF Triggering blocked
1 Triggering by trigger input 1 1
2 Triggering by trigger input 2

4.1.12 Parameter 109: Offset distance

The distance between the light barrier and the application head is called the offset distance and can be defined
individually for each application head. This means that the glue application for each application head can always
be calculated starting from the product edge. Alteration after lifting of access blockage Loc1.

Contrary to all other parameters, the altered value of the offset distance is only
taken over after the parameter input is quit!

Input range Function Default

0…9,999 [mm] Offset distance between light barrier and application head 200

Calculating the offset distance:

The distance must be selected long enough so that the reaction times of the application heads can be taken into
account. Approx. 1 / 5 of the maximum machine speed can be assumed as offset distance.
E.g. vmax = 200 m/min, offset distance = 40 mm

The minimum offset distance (without safety reserve) can

also be calculated precisely:

The minimum distance between light barrier and application head depends on the
maximum machine speed and the switch-on compensation t on.

4.1.13 Parameter 110: Blockage length trigger input 1

4.1.14 Parameter 111: Blockage length trigger input 2
After release, the trigger inputs are blocked for a certain distance. The blockage length [mm] is defined individu-
ally for each trigger input. Independently of this parameter, the trigger input is always blocked from product start
to product end. Alteration after lifting of access blockage Loc1.

4.1.15 Parameter 112: Trigger edge / operating mode trigger input 1

4.1.16 Parameter 113: Trigger edge / operating mode trigger input 2
Releasing of the glue application is effected by a light barrier signal at the trigger input. The parameters 112 and
113 determine the evaluation of the light barrier signal edge at the two trigger inputs. The application head out-
puts are assigned to a trigger input by means of parameter 108.

4.1.18 Parameter 115: Output voltage channels VALVE1…4

4.1.19 Parameter 116: Output voltage channels VALVE5…8
On switching-on, 24 Volts are present at the valve output during a few milliseconds in order to achieve a short
switch-on time of the solenoid valves. This voltage is called the »overexcitation voltage«. Afterwards the voltage
is reduced to the extent that the valve remains only just switched on. This voltage is programmable and is called
the output voltage. It can be set for the valve group 1…4 and 5…8. Alteration after lifting of access blockage

Lowering of the voltage is recommended under all circumstances in the interest of

a reduced power consumption and a faster switch-off.

The output voltage must never be higher than the valve's nominal voltage, otherwise
the valve will be destroyed. This is why you must mark the programmed output volt-
age on each valve connection cable.

4.1.20 Parameter 117: Encoder input

4.1.21 Parameter 118: Proportional valve output

At option, the proportional valve output can be configured as current output (4…20 mA) or as voltage output
(0…10 V). For this purpose the appliance must be disconnected from the mains supply and opened, and jumper
X6 on the ICS-EXT1 printed circuit board must be placed either in position 1+2 for current output or 2+3 for
voltage output (see also chapter 3.3.6). Alteration after lifting of access blockage Loc2.

only! In the normal case the basic setting is sufficient!

With this allocation it is possible to detect several application head outputs under one channel. The following ap-
plies in the basic setting: Application head output = channel. The allocation is programmable for each individual
application head. The parameters 101, 102, 104 and 106…109 are channel-specific and can, if defined here, re-

4.2 Heating zone release and preheating

The inputs H-ENABLE1…3 on board ICS-EXT1 permit switching on and off as well as preheating of each indi-
vidual heating zone (tank, heated hoses and application heads) by a higher-ranking control. With the parameters
201...207 at the device, up to seven different combinations can be defined and activated via the three inputs.

4.2.1 Parameter 200: Existence ICS-EXT1, evaluation H-ENABLE 1…3

Input range Function Default

OFF Heating zone is switched off

Switching heating zones on/off with »On« or »OFF«

All heating zones put »On« are heated up and must have reached their nominal temperature for the appliance re-
lease »Ready«. Heating zones which are not required must be put »OFF«. In the basic setting all heating zones
are »On«.

Preheating of heating zones with »P«

Heating zones can already be heated up while a production with other active heating zones is in progress. In the
condition »P« the corresponding heating zones are heated up, but the release of the appliance depends only on the
condition of the heating zones put »On«. The readiness of the preheated heating zones is indicated over the inter-
face output OUT1. The output switches on when all heating zones put on »P« have reached their nominal tem-
peratures. This enables a switch-over without interruption.

Switching-over is to be effected as follows:

1. Selection of a combination of heating zones in which the currently used heating zones are put »On« and the
heating zones required later are put »P«.
2. Wait until the output OUT1 indicates the readiness of all heating zones put »P«.
3. Selection of a new combination of heating zones in which all used heating zones are put »On«.

ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5 Operation 33

Release of the heating zones is programmed as follows:

• Select Parameter with the keys (1).

• With the keys (2), select one of the possible pa-

rameter numbers 201…207 – display in field (3).

• With the left/right keys (4), select the desired heat-

ing zone tank, heated hose or application head. In
the case of the heated hose and application head,
additionally select the number by means of the
up/down keys (5). The corresponding heated hose
or head number comes up in the display (6).

• The display (7) shows the current setting of the

heating zone »On, OFF or P«. The selection is made
with the keys (8).

4.2.3 Calling up the release of the heating zones

The combinations of heating zones programmed with the parameters 201…207 are activated over the interface
inputs H-ENABLE1…3. The parameter is determined via the following switching states:

4.3 Selecting program numbers

Up to 87 program numbers are available for the storage of the programmed glue application patterns. Before en-
tering or calling the application patterns it is necessary to select the program number under which the inputs are
to be processed. The following possibilities are available for this purpose:

All displays and inputs of application patterns always refer to the currently se-
lected program number.

4.3.1 Selection via keyboard

• Select the Parameter function with the keys (1).

• Select parameter number 100 with the keys (2). The

display (3) confirms the selection.

• Display (4) now shows the currently selected pro-

gram number. After lifting of the access blockage
 Loc1  a new number P 0…P 86 can be determined
with the keys (5). Immediately the new program is
active.

4.3.2 Selection via the interface inputs

If the program selection is made over the system interface inputs PROG 1...PROG 6, the right decimal point is lit
in the program display. Via this inputs 2 6= 64 programs [P 1…P 64.] can be selected. During the program change
a possibly running input is aborted and the new program number P XX. is displayed during two seconds. The
status of the inputs PROG 1…PROG 6 can also be enquired via parameter number 181.

If the inputs PROG1…PROG6 are used, a program selection via the keyboard is
ineffective.

4.4 Programming of application patterns

4.4.1 Different application modes
The parameters 112 and 113 (see chapters 4.1.15 and 4.1.16) determine the operating mode of the application
heads. The following modes are possible:

Mode Function and programmation Example

Continuous glue application as long as the trigger is

switched on. The glue line can be stitched.
– – –
For this mode, no programming of length is neces-
sary.

Intermittent glue application. The application is re-

_ _| ¯
leased by modification of the trigger.
or Up to 31 different glue lines are possible from the
start of product. The lines can be stitched further.
¯ ¯|_
Programming see chapter 4.4.2

The application is released by the trigger at the start

and finished by the trigger at the end of the product.
One glue line at the start and at the end of the prod-
uct is possible. The distances are the same on both
| – |
sides. If the application length is selected big
enough, i.e. bigger than the maximum glue applica-
tion length, an uninterrupted glue application is also
possible. After release of glueing it is, additionally,
possible to define a channel-specific trigger block-
age length.
Programming see chapter 4.4.3

4.4.2 Intermittent glue application

4.4.2.1 Basic aspects
The intermittent glue application (see chapter 4.1.15/.16 and 4.4.1) permits programming of up to 31 different
glue lines with every release of the application head. Prior to the data input it is necessary to determine the num-
ber and positions of the glue applications. The relevant data are to be calculated as follows:

L1 Distance product start - 1st application

A1 Length of 1st glue application
L2 Distance product start - 2nd application
A2 Length of 2nd glue application

Lx Distance product start - xth application
Ax Length of 1st glue application

At option, every glue application can be programmed as uninterrupted application (as illustrated above), or it can
be chopped further: (see chapter 4.4.2.3, Stitched)

A1 length of 1st glue application

P151 repeating interval length
P152 repeating glue length

4.4.2.2 Entering the application pattern

Condition: The input of a glue pattern is only possible if the operating mode (pa-
rameter 112/113) is put on »intermittent«.

• Press key (1) in the operating field of control IK.

• The application head to be programmed is selected

with the keys (2) and displayed in field (3). If an
application pattern is already programmed, the
LEDs in field (6) are flashing.

• Press key (4). Display (5) shows the figure 1 for the
first glue application. Two LEDs in indication (6)
are flashing for »Distance product start - applica-
tion«.

• The keys (7) serve to enter the desired distance

which is displayed in field (8).

• Repeated pressing of key (4) serves to call the next

dimension which is again entered with the keys (7).

• Clearing: Individual glue applications are cleared

by resetting the last length.

ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5 Operation 37

4.4.2.3 Stitching of the application pattern

The glue lines in the intermittend and continuous application mode can be further stitched (see chapter 4.4.2.1
Basic aspect). To this effect you proceed as follows:

• Select function Parameter with the keys (1)

• Select the parameter 150 with the keys (2). The

number comes up in the display (3).

• The desired application head or »A« for all is se-

lected with the keys (4) and shown in the display
field (5).

• Set the parameter 150 via key (5) to »On«.

• Record the repeating interval length in parameter

151 and record the repeating glue length in parame-
ter 152.

Ax Length of the programmed glue application

P151 repeating interval length
P152 repeating glue length

On completion of the input the application pattern is checked and if the lengths or
intervals, respectively, are too short, the application pattern of the channels con-
cerned is cleared and the error »E102« is displayed.

38 Operation ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5

4.4.3 Application at the start and at the end of the product

4.4.3.1 Basic aspects

Depending on the programming inputs, two different application modes are possible:

1. One application at the start and at the end of the product

The distances from the start of the product to the application must correspond on both sides, the lengths of the
application also.

L1  Distance product start - glue line

A1  Length of glue application

Conditions:  Product length > 2 x (L1 + A1)

Offset distance > L1 + A1

2. Uninterrupted application with automatical adjustment of the length of application

If the application length is selected big enough, i.e. bigger than the maximum glue application length, an uninter-
rupted glue application is also possible. The distance L1 at the start and at the end of the product is always ob-
served, independently from the length of application A1.

L1  Distance product start - glue line

A eff Length of glue application (effective)
A1  Length of glue application (programmed)

Conditions:  A1 > A eff

Offset distance > L1

4.4.3.2 Entering the application pattern

For the input of the two measures L1 and A1 see description in chapter 4.4.2.2.

The input o the two measures L1 and A1 is sufficient. It is possible to enter fur-
ther lengths, but they will not be considered.

Stitching of the glue lines is not possible in this application mode.

In addition to the two length dimensions it is also possible to define a channel-specific trigger blockage length.
After release of glueing, the trigger input of the corresponding channel remains blocked for the distance (length)
defined in parameter 142 (see chapter 4.1.28).

ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5 Operation 39

4.4.4 Clearing an application pattern

The following procedure must be adopted to clear a complete application pattern of an application head:

• Press key (1) in the operating field of the ICS-IK

pattern control.

• Select the appropriate application head with the

keys (2). Display in field (3).

• No application must be selected in display (4). This

display must be empty.

• Keep first key (5) and then key (1) depressed to-
gether during at least 4 seconds. The two LEDs (6)
go dark and thereby confirm the clearing process.

40 Operation ICS-IK 42…48 / v4.5

4.5 Manual valve actuation

During the manual mode the normal glue application is interrupted and all trigger inputs are blocked.

Warning  Danger of splashing and burning

In case of manual release of the application heads there is a danger of burns from
hot splashes. It is the operator's responsibility that no further persons are within
splashing range of the application heads. For all adjustment work on the applica-
tion heads it is an absolute must to wear protective goggles and protective gloves.

• Change to the manual mode by pressing the key (1).

The LED in the key is lit and the display (2) shows
»- - - -«.

• With the keys (3), select the desired application

head number or »A« for all heads. Display in field
(4).

• The displayed valve output switches on for as long

as key (5) is pressed (default) or keeps switched on
till the key (5) is pressed again (if parameter 122 =
On). Condition: The appliance is ready for opera-
tion (LED »Ready« is lit).

• If the appliance is not ready for operation (LED

»Ready« not lit) and parameter 119 is »OFF«, the
display (2) shows »-Lo-« on actuation of the key
(5).

• By renewed pressing of the key (1) the manual

mode is quit.

4.6 Error messages

Display Cause
E100 Valve outputs overloaded
E101 System interface outputs overloaded
E102 Application pattern cleared because lengths or intervals too short
(acknowledgment by pressing key)
E103 Speed greater than vmax

The errors E100 and E101 remain stored until the appliance is switched off and on again.
