“Knowledge of Self”
Chitta = Consciousness, Vritti = activities or patterns of the mind, Nirodha = stop or block.

4 types of Chitta are:


• Manas (मनस)- the mind i) sends signals from the intellect to the action organs. ii)
responsible for emotions. iii) The act of performing these functions is called manana (मनन)
or contemplation.
• Buddhi (बद्ु धी) - the intellect i) rationalises ii) judges iii) reasons by gathering knowledge iv)
remembering v) analysing, inquiring and discriminating between right and wrong.
• Chittam (चचत्तम ्) - the memory. i) The data received from the five knowledge organs are
stored in memory. ii) has access to memories from our past lives
• Ahamkara (अहं कार) - the ego i) which is our individual self, our gross and subtle bodies. ii)
important to function and transact in the real world. iii) Our feelings of separation, pain
and alienation foster owing to ahamkara.
Chitta = Consciousness, Vritti = activities or patterns of the mind, Nirodha = stop or block.

The 5 varieties of thought patterns (Vrittis) are:


• pramana (प्रमाण) knowing correctly,
• viparyaya(ववपर्यर्) incorrect knowing,
• vikalpa (ववकल्प) fantasy or imagination, misconception or delusion, hallucination
• nidra (ननद्रा) the object of void-ness that is deep sleep and
• smriti (स्मत
ृ र्ः) recollection or memory.

Vrittis are made of Chitta.


ASHTANGAYOGA which means the 8 limbs of yoga.
