2 About This Guide

This administration guide is for network administrators and system engineers who are primarily
responsible for managing enterprise and service provider infrastructure. This guide helps you to configure
the BroadWorks servers through the BroadWorks Element Management System (EMS) Common
Configuration to suit your organizational requirements, and facilitates integrating new management
services with the EMS for use by operations and maintenance personnel. The platform provides an
intuitive, easy-to-use graphical user interface to make things easy for network administrators.
This guide describes the following administrative tasks:
• Manage revisions
• Configure the servers on your network
• Customize configurations for specific server nodes
To work with the BroadWorks EMS, network administrators must be familiar with the following:
• System administration and networking concepts
• Web Servers
• Database administration
• Java basics

2.1 Purpose
EMS Configuration Management provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to configure BroadWorks
servers. As an alternative to the command line interface (CLI), the EMS Common Configuration lets you
configure the existing defaults on BroadWorks servers. EMS Configuration Management provides the
capability to configure all servers of a type (for instance, the Execution Server) or a specific node.
This document is designed to assist system providers with the management of all EMS Configuration
Management functions. Detailed instructions for each function of the Configuration Management can
be found both in the manual and in the online help, by clicking Help from all pages in the Configuration
Management interface.
This document covers the administrative features of the Configuration Management interface, which are
available from the Centralized Networking tab in the EMS.

2.2 Configuration Management System Conventions

The Configuration Management feature has a unique interface. This section describes the following:
• Configuration Management Menus
• Configuration Management Pages
• Help on Parameters
Configuration Management Menus
The menus in Configuration Management work slightly differently from other areas of the EMS. They are
presented in a hierarchical folder structure. The following figure illustrates an example of a Configuration
Management menu expanded for the Xtended Services Platform.

Figure 1: Configuration Management Menu

To open a folder, click the plus (+) sign to the left of the folder. The menu expands and the corresponding
sign changes to a minus (-) sign to indicate that the folder is open.
Specific configuration pages are indicated with a blue circle to the left of the name of the page. Click the
name of the page to display the page. The following figure illustrates an example of the Logging page for
the Xtended Services Platform Configuration Agent.

Parameter Default Value Valid Values Description

Model shared, unique This parameter determines

how Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP)
traps are sent. When the value
is set to "shared", the SNMP
Agent wraps every trap in an
envelope with the same name.
The recipient can receive three
different types of envelopes:
a notification, an alarm, or a
software error. The content
of the envelope provides an
explanation of the source of
the problem. When the value
is set to "unique", the SNMP
Agent sends every instance
of a notification in a different
envelope. Each of these
uniquely identifies the problem
without having to open the
envelope.

Use Alarms true, false This parameter determines

if the system sends pairs of
notifications or alarms. This is
a backward-compatibility flag.

3.8.7 Configure V3 Users

This page provides the ability to view, add, modify, delete and clear the V3 User level attributes. The V3
User level provides support for the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) version 3 (SNMPv3).
The primary feature of SNMPv3 is additional security. The only security feature in SNMPv2 is the support
of community strings (that can be viewed as a simple password with no user name). SNMPv3 supports
multiple user name/password pairs, as well as encryption. System administrators are able to configure
the version of SNMP that BroadWorks should support (v2 or v3), as well as parameters specific to each
version. Note that some SNMPv3 features, such as View-based Access Control Model (VACM), are not
supported. In fact, BroadWorks is configured with a single view that gives access to all performance
measurements. The only supported view name is "default".

of Overallocation protection. The software manager tries to compensate for the over-allocation by
allocating less memory than requested by the containers, within the limits.

NOTE: If memory protection is disabled, the software manager allocates memory to the containers
according to the configuration. This may cause performance degradation due to swapping.

4) Click Save Changes to modify this configuration or Reset Values to discard the changes.

The recipient can receive three
different types of envelopes:
a notification, an alarm, or a
software error. The content
of the envelope provides an
explanation of the source of
the problem. When the value
is set to "unique", the SNMP
Agent sends every instance
of a notification in a different
envelope. Each of these
uniquely identifies the problem
without having to open the
envelope.

Use Alarms true, false This parameter determines

if the system sends pairs of
notifications or alarms. This is
a backward-compatibility flag.
