Script Summary:
The classic fairy tale "Goldilocks and the Three Bears"
is retold with rich description. The script invites readers
to enjoy the adventures of a girl who happens upon a
cottage in the forest and finds three bowls of porridge,
three chairs, and three beds. What surprises await the
family that lives in the cottage?

Objectives and Assessment


Monitor students to determine if they can:
• consistently read their lines with appropriate rate and accuracy
• consistently read their lines with appropriate expression, including pause, inflection,
and intonation
• follow along silently and listen for spoken cues

Using the Scripts:


• Each role is assigned a reading level according to the syntactic and semantic difficulty
encountered. Feel free to divide roles further to include more readers in a group.
• Discuss vocabulary and encourage readers to practice their lines to promote fluent delivery
of the script.
• Have readers highlight their lines on the scripts, and encourage them to follow along
as everyone reads.

Narrator 1
Once upon a time, there was a youngster named
Goldilocks who lived at the edge of the forest.

Narrator 2
She was called Goldilocks because her beautiful locks
glistened in the sun, like gold.

Narrator 3
Goldilocks was curious by nature. She often looked for—
and found—adventures in the forest.

Narrator 1
One bright morning, she sets out for a stroll in
the woods. She comes upon a cozy cottage and peeks
in the windows.

Narrator 2
When she doesn’t see anyone inside, she knocks on
the door. When nobody comes to the door, she turns
the handle and goes right in.

Narrator 3
Goldilocks does not have the best manners in the forest.

Narrator 1
Goldilocks doesn’t realize that the cottage belongs
to a family of bears.

Narrator 2
There is a teeny-sized baby bear, a medium-sized mama
bear, and a huge-sized papa bear.

Narrator 3
Goldilocks also doesn’t realize that the bear family has
a daily morning routine.

Narrator 1
After Papa Bear makes a steaming pot of porridge,
the family goes blueberry picking.

Narrator 2
This way, the porridge has time to cool, and they have
plump, sweet blueberries to plop into their porridge.

Goldilocks
What is this? Three steaming bowls of porridge sit
on the table. The sweet-smelling porridge is making
my stomach gurgle with hunger! I can’t resist. I’ll try
a heaping spoonful of the porridge from the huge bowl.

Narrator 3
Goldilocks tries a spoonful of Papa Bear’s porridge.

Goldilocks
Yow! This porridge is as hot as lava! I’m going to try
the porridge from the medium-sized bowl.

Narrator 1
Goldilocks tries a spoonful of Mama Bear’s porridge.

Goldilocks
Bleck! This porridge is ice cold! I’m going to try the
porridge from the small bowl.

Narrator 2
Goldilocks tastes the porridge from Teeny Baby Bear’s
small bowl.

Goldilocks
Mmmm. This porridge isn’t just good. It’s great. In fact,
it’s just right!

Narrator 3
She quickly gobbles up every last bit of Teeny Baby Bear’s
porridge.

Narrator 1
After eating the porridge, Goldilocks is curious about the
rest of the cottage, so she wanders into the living room.

Narrator 2
She sees three chairs and decides to sit for a bit, for she
is feeling quite full.

Goldilocks
I’m going to try this huge chair first.

Narrator 3
She sits in Papa Bear’s huge chair but jumps up with
a scowl on her face.

Goldilocks
Hmph! This chair is as big as a refrigerator! It’s much too
big for me. I’ll try the medium-sized chair.

Narrator 1
Goldilocks sits in Mama Bear’s medium-sized chair
and again jumps up in an instant.

Goldilocks
This chair is still too big! Maybe this small chair will
be better.

Narrator 2
Goldilocks sits in Teeny Baby Bear’s small chair
and begins to bounce with glee.

Goldilocks
This chair isn’t just a little comfortable. It’s really
comfortable. In fact, it’s just—

Narrators 1, 2, and 3
Crack!

Goldilocks
—right. Oops, looks like I broke it. Oh well. I simply don’t
have the energy to fix the broken chair.

Narrator 3
A sleepy Goldilocks wearily climbs the stairs searching
for a bed.

Narrator 1
She plops onto the first bed she sees—Papa Bear’s
huge bed.

Goldilocks
No, no, no! This bed is as hard as granite. I’ll try
the medium-sized bed.

Narrator 2
She plops onto Mama Bear’s medium-sized bed.

Goldilocks
Help! I’m sinking! This bed is as soft as a cotton ball.
I’ll try the small bed.

Narrator 3
Goldilocks plops onto Teeny Baby Bear’s small bed.

Goldilocks
This bed isn’t just a little comfy and cozy. It’s really comfy
and cozy. In fact, it’s just . . . Zzzzz.

Narrator 1
While Goldilocks sleeps, the owners of the house return
from blueberry picking.

Narrator 2
Papa Bear carries a huge basket brimming with
blueberries. Mama Bear carries a medium-sized basket
brimming with blueberries. And Teeny Baby Bear carries
a small basket brimming with blueberries.

Narrator 3
The three bears are not prepared for what they find when
they open their cottage door.

Papa Bear
Someone’s been eating my porridge! There’s a spoonful
missing from my huge bowl.

Mama Bear
Someone’s been eating my porridge! There’s a spoonful
missing from my medium-sized bowl, too.

Teeny Baby Bear


Someone’s been eating my porridge, and it’s all gone!

Narrator 1
Next, the hungry bears walk into the living room
and see their chairs.

Papa Bear
Someone’s been sitting in my chair. I can tell.

Mama Bear
Someone’s been sitting in my chair. The cushion is out
of place.

Teeny Baby Bear


Someone’s been sitting in my chair, and it’s broken
in hundreds of pieces!

Narrator 2
Then the hungry, angry bears march noisily up the stairs.

Papa Bear
Someone’s been sleeping in my bed! The pillows are out
of place.

Mama Bear
Someone’s been sleeping in my bed! The covers are all
messed up.

Teeny Baby Bear


Someone’s been sleeping in my bed, and she’s still there!

Goldilocks
Shhhh! I’m trying to sleep!

Narrator 3
When Goldilocks sees three hungry, angry bears staring
at her, she leaps out of bed.

Goldilocks
Help! Help! Bears are going to eat me!

Narrator 1
Goldilocks runs down the stairs, past the chairs,
past the bowls of porridge, and out the door.

Narrator 2
Goldilocks never again goes to the home of the three bears.

Narrator 3
But she does often daydream about that delicious bowl
of porridge, and that perfect little wooden chair, and that
comfy, cozy bed.

They really were just right.
