to teaching courses or field experience courses and can be
a suplimental text for foundations or teaching methods
courses. It is also a quick but thorough core text for
beginning inservice teachers who come to teaching from
other fields or who lack full certification for other reasons
and are trying to gain certification at the same time they are
beginning to teach.
This book attempts to present useful, practical points of
view that can provide meaning and direction for new
teachers’ actions related to a number of central educational
issues. It is based on six propositions of teaching:
 Teaching looks easy.... from the outside
 Every teacher is part of a system
 Teachuing is directed toward the goal of fostering
change
 Teaching is more than telling
 There is agreement on what teachers need to know
and be able to do
 Teachers can be effective and yet not just alike
These can shape the content and the organiszation and
features of this book. Each chapter asks readers to
consider their own experiences and perspectives; many
chapters open an opportunity for readers to think about their
own prior experiences. Each chapter encourages readers to
think critically about chapter content and to connect it to
their classroom context. For example, chapters provide
observation guides, lesson planning formats, and scavenger
hunts for readers’ application. Finally each chapter asks
readers to build a plan for action, including developing their
own philosophies, discipline plans and assessment
programs.
