A/ There are #Six plosive consonants which are / p, t, k, b, d, g /. There is another plosive
which as glottal, its symbol is /ʔ/ and can be mastered by making a gentle cough. But this
Glottal Plosive is less important.
2- /t , d/ are #alveolar Plosives, since the tongue blade is pressed against the alveolar ridge.
3- /k , g/ are #velar Plosives, since the back of the tongue touches the area where the hard
palate ends.
All the six plosives can be found #initially, #medially and #finally.
1- In Initial Position
A-The closing phase for /p,t,k/ and /b,d,g/ take place silently.
B- During the Compression phase, NO voicing occurs for /p,t,k/. But there is very little voicing
just before the release phase for /b,d,g/.
D- The Post Release phase, the production of /p,t,k/ is accompanied by #aspiration, a sound
like /h/ resulted from the escaping of air from the vocal folds. NO aspiration for /b,d,g/
because they are followed by weak plosion.
*in initial position, /p,t,k/ can be preceded by /s/, then they will be unaspirated. But NO
consonant can precede /b,d,g/
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
2- In Medial Position
The pronunciation of /p,t,k/ and /b,d,g/ in medial position depends on the preceding and
following syllables whether they are stressed or not.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
3- In Final Position
/b,d,g/ have little voicing, but if there is some, it will be at the beginning of the Compression
phase. While /p,t,k/ are always Voicless. The plosion following the release of /p,t,k/ and
/b,d,g/ is always weak and often not audible.
The difference between /p,t,k/ and /b,d,g/ in the #Final_Position is that the vowels that
precede / p,t,k / are much shorter than the vowels which precede /b,d,g/.
The shortening effect of /p,t,k/ can be much noticed especially if there vowels are Long or
Diphthongs. This effect is known as #pre_fortis_clipping

-Because in the closing phase (1st phase) there is no full closure to the vocal folds, there a

Definations
Affricate:- is a consonant that begins as a stop and releases as a fricative, generally with the
same place of articulation. It is often difficult to decide if a stop and fricative form a single
phoneme or a consonant pair. English has two affricate phonemes, [t ͡ʃ] and [d͡ʒ], often
spelled ch and j. (Wikipedia)
Affricates:- they are complex sounds, because they begin as plosives and end as fricatives
(Roach)
*(homorganic means consonants produced in the same, or nearly the same place of
articulation)
Affricates in details
For the affricates, there are voiceless and voiced postalveolars sounds, ( [t ͡ʃ] and [d͡ʒ] )
respectively. There is no presence of independent symbols for affricates in the IPA and IPA
chart, it combines the stop and the follwing fricative with the use of a tie bar [ ͡ ].
There are two reasons for not using independent symbols for the affricates:
First:- Affricates can be easily represented by this procedure and it reduces the number of
symols in IPA chart.
Second:- There is a debate whether affricates are really single sound segment or cluster of
plosive followed by homorganic fricative.
As it was mentioned above, affricates are only two sounds and they are formed from
clusters of stops followed by homorganic fricatives. But not every sequence of stops
followed by fricative can be called affricates. English, in general, wouldn't allow a cluster of
stops and fricatives in initial places. In other places of (medial and final) there are some
clusters of stops and fricatives (sometimes even homorganic) but they are given no special
status in English phonology, for example; the dental sounds [tθ] as in the word eighth or the
alveolar affricate [ts] as in cats, they have been regarded just as consonant clusters.
Therefore; only [t͡ʃ] and [d͡ʒ] are considered affricates and have their independent
pronunciation because English never accepts any cluster of stops and fricatives at the
beginning of the word. (Reetz and Jongman)
Affricates combine aspects of plosive and fricative and their acoustic characteristics are
similar to those of plosives and fricatives at the same place of articulation, except for the
duration of the friction portion, which is shorter than for the fricatives that are produced
independently.
As a class, affricates can be distinguished from fricatives in terms of rise time, fricatives have
long rise time since their amplitude builds up in a gradual manner, whereas affricates have a
short rise time because of the presence of the stops at their beginning, the friction noise
rapidly reaches maximum amplitude. (Reetz and Jongman).
