ELEPHANT
Animals in the Qur'an Series : Elephant
Description
Elephants are mammals and the LARGEST existing land animal.

Elephants have distinctive features which include:

a long trunk
tusks
large ear flaps and
pillar like legs
The elephant's trunk is used for many things such as breathing, bringing
food and water to the mouth and grasping objects.

Their tusks come from their incisor teeth and are used as a weapon, to
move objects and to dig.

Elephants range between 2.5m-3.5m in length with female elephants

generally being smaller in size than males.

Habitat
There are two major species of elephant: The African Elephant and the
Asian Elephant.

Elephants are found in different habitats including savannas, forests, deserts

and marshes and they like to stay near water when it is available.

different habitats.

Location
Elephants can be found throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, throughout South-
East Asia and the South of Asia to India.

Both the African and Asian elephant population's are in danger with the
numbers of elephants in the wild declining. The Asian elephant has seen a
decrease in population mainly due to the loss of its habitat, whereas, the
African elephant has been poached for its tusks.

Diet
Elephants are strict herbivores. They spend nearly 80% of their day
feeding. Elephants eat grasses, small plants, bushes, fruit, twigs, tree bark
and roots.
The Elephant in the
Qur'an & Sunnah
Surah Al-Fil 'The Elephant' is the 105th Chapter of the Qur'an.
"Have you not considered, [O Muhammad], how your Lord dealt with the
companions of the elephant? Did He not make their plan into misguidance?
And He sent against them birds in flocks, Striking them with stones of hard
clay, And He made them like eaten straw."
(Qur'an 105:1-5)

Allah informs us of the Christian Ethiopian Governer of Yemen, Abrahah, who

led a campaign against Makkah. Abrahah had made a great Cathedral in
San'a hoping to direct people away from pilgrimage to Makkah and the
Ka'bah. His plan was not successful and this made him very angry. He was
determined to destroy the Ka'bah.

He set out with a large army which included a number of elephants. By the will
of Allah, Abrahah's large army was destroyed by a flock of birds who dropped
stones on them. This year became known as 'The Year of The Elephant' and it
was the year in which the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon
him, was born, in 570CE.

“And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings
except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the
Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered." (Qur'an 6:38)

The above verse is extremely fitting when one ponders on the dynamics
between the elephant herd. Elephants live in groups called 'herds' of up to 20
made up solely of adult females and calves. The matriarch is the head
elephant that leads the herd. When they travel, she is normally followed in
single file, calves following their mother obediently, holding on their tales with
their strong little trunks.
