ELEPHANTS

ENDANGERED
animal
Elephants are the
largest mammals in the
world.

Elephants have unique

physical characteristics:
a long trunk, large ears,
and thick, wide legs.
There are two species: the Asian elephant
and the African elephant.
Asian elephants are smaller than African
elephants and their ears are straight at the
bottom, compared to the large fan-shaped ears
of African species. Only some male Asian
elephants have tusks, while African elephants,
both male and female, have tusks.

It is important to note that there are

two species of elephants on the
African continent: the savannah
elephant and the forest elephant.
WHERE DO
ELEPHANTS
LIVE?
African forest elephants inhabit the dense
rainforest of West and Central Africa, while

TO MAKE PIANO KEYS, AT LEAST
3,600 ELEPHANTS HAD TO BE

THEY USE THEIR TRUNKS TO SUCK

AFRICAN ELEPHANT
SPECIES ARE CRITICALLY
ENDANGERED
Following decades of population
decline due to ivory poaching and
habitat loss, the African forest
elephant is now “Critically
Endangered” on the IUCN Red List
of Threatened Species. ™ and the
African bush elephant is
“Endangered”. The number of
African forest elephants has
declined by more than 86% in a 31-

of African savanna elephants has
declined by at least 60% in the
last 50 years, according to
assessments.
