DESCRIPTION 5.1. ‘General description - Construction materials ‘The tension clamp shall be suitable for the self supporting LV aerial bundled cables (ABC) manufactured according to PPC TD DMKLD-211/29.05.1997 (or according to the most recent amendment of HD 626-4N) and shall consist of the following parts: — Holding straps (arms) = Clamping wedges (made of insuiating material) — Tightening screws and bolts An indicative outline of the clamp is shown in Drawing No 4 (paragraph 8.2.1). 5.1.1. Holding straps The two holding straps (arms) shall be made of steel and shall be hot dip galvanized according to PPC Technical Specification XK 11.02/10.03.1998, with minimum galvanization thickness 86 jm, and with chromium treatment according to PPC Technical Specification XK 14.03/11.11.1987, exhibiting strength of 150 h under salt fog test. The straps shall be appropriately processed in order to be free of defects and not showing poorly treated edges and holes. This process shall be performed prior to galvanization. it must be noted that straps made of aluminium or aluminium alloys shall not be accepted due to inadequate resistance against coastal corrosion. At one end of the straps there shall be holes where a stud (axis) with a head at one end and a safety pin (R* clip) at the other shall be installed. The stud and the pin shall constitute a part of the tension clamp, and they shall be made of the same material (steel) and they shall both have the same galvanization and chromium treatment as the straps, but with galvanization thickness according to Table | of PPC Technical Specification XK 11.02/10.03.1988. Alternatively, the safety pin can be made of stainiess steel. Through the stud, the clamp shail be installed on the nut with a fastening ring which is specified in PPC Technical Specification EK 03.89/18.05.1998. The minimum stud diameter in order to assume the mechanical loads shall be ©16 mm. The safety pin shall be permanently connected to one of the straps by means of a synthetic belt or cord, The straps, at the other end, shall retain the clamping wedges (par. 5.1.2) through the tightening screws and bolts (par. 5.1.3). Drawing No 1 (par. 9.2.1) provides certain dimensions with which the main body of the tension clamp shall comply. The minimum values of dimensions Ly, Lz, Ls and t are binding for the manufacturer. ‘As shown in section B - B of Drawing No 1, the internal edges of the holding straps shall be chamfered (curvature radius r) so that they shall not cause damage to the insulation of the cable cores due to friction. 5.1.2. Clampin (made of insulating material The clamping wedges hold the four strained cores of the ABC (le. the three phases and the neutral) in the tension clamp. The clamping. wedges consist of three parts. The three parts are tightened on one another and on the hoiding straps (par. 5.1.1) by means of the tightening screws and bolts (oar. 5.1.3). Through the design of the clamping wedges, 4 grooves (channels) shall be formed between the parts so that the 4 strained cores of the ABC are restrained, as shown in Diagram No 1 (par. 9.2.1). The clamping wedges shall restrain the 4 strained cores in the clamp at least up to the straining forces of the latter that are specified in paragraph 5.5 herein, without causing abnormal wear to their insulation. The restraining of the strained cores in the grooves of the clamping wedges shall be performed as follows: — Through the configuration of the grooves of the clamping wedges (suitable wrinkling of their surface etc.) — Through tightening of the clamping devices by the tightening bolts — Through the wedge-lke action of the clamping wedges (light shifting of the clamping devices towards the strained cable when the loads are assumed). The strained cores shall be easily inserted in the grooves of the clamping wedges, by unscrewing the tightening bolts. It is permitted to install a spring system inside the clamping wedges, which shall help the withdrawal of the parts of the clamping wedges from one another to facilitate the insertion-temoval of the cabie. The clamping wedges shall be made of synthetic material, resistant to environmental impacts (exposure to ultraviolet radiation, industrial pollution, salt, high or low temperatures etc.) and to impacts resuiting from the cable operation (cable warming due to loading ete.), and it shall provide reliable insulation between the cable cores and the metallic parts of the clamp under such conditions. All other parts of the clamp which are made of synthetic material (e.g. nut heads) shall also exhibit the above properties. A list (not obligatory for the manufacturer) of the commercial names of synthetic materials ‘exhibiting satisfactory behaviour in clamping wedge constructions is provided below: - POLYSTYRENE SUPER CHOCK = HOSTAFORM = ABS = ABS / CHARGE DE VERRE — POLYACETYL 5.1.3. Tightening screws & bolts ‘The tightening screws and their nuts shall be made of the same material (steel) and they shall ail have the same galvanization and chromium treatment as the hoiding straps (see par. 5.1.1), but the galvanization thickness shall be according to Table | of PPC Technical Specification XK 11.02/10.03.1988. The nuts shall present a tightening torque limit by having a double head of hexagonal cross- section, One head shall be of the “shear-off" type and shall be used during the installation of the clamp, and the other head shall be used in case of disassembly. The upper and lower limits of the breaking torque of the torque measuring head shall be stated by the manufacturer. The tension clamp shall be equipped with appropriate devices (e.g. washers) to avoid loosening of the bolt nuts. 5.2. Size The size of the suspension clamp, as standardized by this TD, shall be: Size 120 mm? For the tension of the self supporting LV aerial bundled cables 4x120 mm? Al + 25 mm? Al manufactured according to PPC TD OMKLD-211/28.05.97 (or according to the most recent amendment of HD 626-4N). 5.3. General requirement for construction materials All materials used shall be appropriately selected regarding their physical and chemical properties and their dimensions for reliable operation of the clamp under the expected conditions of the network and its environment (maximum continuous loadings, overcurrents, direct exposure to sunlight / ultraviolet radiation, dust, salt, industrial pollution, humidity, low temperatures, etc.). 5.4, Life span requirements ‘The tension clamp shall operate in a satisfactory manner during a period approximately ‘equal to the life span of the LV bundied cables (estimated to be approximately 35 years). 5.5. Mechanical characte! = Mechanical strength to tensile load applied on ABC installed in the clamp along the longitudinal direction, without breaking or permanent deformation of the clamp or slippage of the cable greater than 1 mm: 50% of the total minimum breaking load of the 4 carrying conductors, as defined in PPC TD DMKLD-211/29.05.1997 (i.e. 50% x 4 x 1415 = 2830 daN - see test of par. 6.1.2.3). 5.6. Electrical characteristics + Dielectric strength of the synthetic clamping wedges (insulating gasket): 4 kV (see test of par. 6.1.2.1) = Dielectric strength between the metallic parts of the clamp and the cable conductors: 30 KV (see test of par. 6.1.2.2) 6. TESTS The Table of Annex No 1 provides the sequence of tests and the number of samples required for each test. 6.1. Type Tests These tests are performed at the beginning of a Contract and they can be repeated to the absolute judgment of the Corporation at any time during the Contract execution period To the discretion of the Corporation, it is possible for existing test certificates issued by the PPC/TRSC (KDEP) or other recognized laboratories to be accepted. 6.1.1. Geners quirements 6.1.1.1. Samples and installation of samples The tests shall be performed on new samples. ‘The samples shall be installed on new pieces of complete seif-supported ABC 4x120 mm? Al + 25 mm? Al, manufactured according to PPC TD DMKLD-211/29.05.1897 (or according to the most recent amendment of HD 626-4N). The cable pieces shall have sufficient length for the performance of the tests (detailed data provided in the description of each test). The bolts of the samples shall be tightened until the breaking of the torque-measuring head of their nuts. 6.1.1.2. In particular, the cores shall be cut to a length suitable for the test and they shall be kept in a closed chamber at temperature (120 + 2) °C for about 1 hour, and then they shalll be left to cool down to the ambient temperature by opening the chamber's door, 6.1.1.3, Desian approval arteria If a failure occurs in two sample items during a Type test, the design of the tension clamp shall be rejected. If a failure occurs in one sample item during a Type test, the test shall be repeated with twice the number of samples specified in this TD. In this case, the test shall be ‘considered successful if no failure occurs in the new samples, but if even one failure occurs the design of the tension clamp shall be rejected. it must be noted that if, during a test, a failure in a core of the ABC is observed, which is not caused by the sample, the test shall be considered non-performed and it shall be repeated with new samples and new core pieces. 6.1.2. Description of the tests - Success criteria 6.1.2.1. Dielectric test on the clamo 6.1.2.1.1. Test procedure At the 4 grooves of the clamp intended for the installation of the cores of the phases and the neutral of the ABC, 4 metallic cylindrical rods of diameter similar to the external diameter of the strained cable cores and of appropriate length are inserted and tightened. It is permitted to use sections of ACSR 95 mm? conductor (of approximate diameter 17,2 mm) instead of the rods. The metallic part of the clamp is earthed and an AC, 50 Hz voltage is applied between the metallic parts of the clamp and the rods or the ACSR conductor sections. The voltage generator is set to trip for a leakage current of (10 + 0,5) mA. The applied voltage is increased gradually at a rate of approximately 1 KV/s. When it reaches 4 kV rms, it is maintained at this value for 1 min. 6.1.2.1.2. Success criterion The test is considered successful if no fiashover or piercing of the insulating part of the clamp is observed, and in general if no leakage current greater than (10 + 0,5) mA is observed (i.e. if no tripping of the generator occurs). 6.1.2 ‘Number of samples ‘Two (2) sampies. NOTE, if the test is successful, the voitage increase continues in at least one of the ‘samples, and at'the same rate, until failure occurs. The voltage value during failure is recorded for research purposes. 6.1.2.2. Dielectric test between the metallic parts of the clamp and the conductors of the cable 6.1.2.2.1. Test procedure The 4 carrying cores of the ABC are inserted in the clamp and tightened The length of the 4 cores shall be sufficient to avoid flashover between the ends of the core conductors and the metallic part of the clamp. The metallic part of the clamp is earthed and then an AC, 50 Hz voltage is applied between the core conductors and the metallic parts of the clamp. ‘The voltage generator is set to trip for a leakage current of (10 + 0,5) mA. The applied voltage is increased, at a rate of approximately 1 KV/s, up to 30 kV. 6.1.2.2.2. Success criterion The test is considered successful if no failure (piercing) of the cable core insulation is observed, and in general if no leakage current greater than (10 + 0,5) mA is observed (i.e. if no tripping of the generator occurs) 6.1.2.2.3. Number of samples ‘Two (2) samples. NOTES: 1. A clamp that has successfully passed the previous test (par. 6.1.2.1) may also be used, provided that no subsequent failure occurred in the sample. 2. If the test is successful, the voltage increase continues at one of the samples, at least, and at the same rate, until failure occurs. The voltage value during failure is recorded for research purposes. 6.1.2.3. Mechanical strength and slippage test 6.1.2.3.1 Test procedure At the two ends of a cable section (at least 8 m long), tension clamps are installed (on the ‘carrying cores) at a distance of at least 1 m from each end of the cabie section. The cable-clamps assembly is subjected to an increasing tensioning load, at an increase rate between 100 and 500 daNimin, At the joining points of the assembly with the tensioning machine, free rotation shall be allowed by using appropriate devices (e.g. nuts with a ring). The ambient temperature shall be (20 + 5) °C. For tensioning load values equal to 20, 25, 30, 40, 45, and 50% of the total minimum specified breaking load of the 4 carrying cores (4x1415 = 5660 daN, see TD DMKLD- 211/29.05.1997), the load is maintained for 1 min. 6.1.2,3.2. Success criterion ‘The test is considered successful if, for a value of tensioning load equal to 60% of the total minimum specified breaking load of the 4 carrying cores, no slippage greater than 1 mm of the cable cores inside the clamp is observed, or no breaking or permanent deformation of the clamp is observed. 6.1.2.3.3. Number of sampies Two (2) samples. NOTE: If the test is successful, the breaking load value is increased beyond the values mentioned in paragraph 6.1.2.3.1, at the same increase rate, until failure occurs. The tensioning load value during failure is recorded for research purposes. 6.1.2.4. Climatic ageing test 6.1.2.4.1. Preparation of samples Tension clamps are placed at the two ends of a cable section so that the cable length between the clamps is approximately 15-20 cm. The cable-clamps assembly is subjected to tensioning load at an increase rate between 100 and 150 daN/min. The connection of the assembly with the tensioning machine is performed in a manner that allows its free rotation (see par. 6.1.2.3.1). When the tensioning load reaches a value equal to 20% of the total minimum specified breaking load of the 4 carrying ‘cores (4 x 1415 x 20% = 1132 daN, see TD DMKLD-211/29.05. 1997), the load is maintained for 10 min. Then the assembly is unloaded gradually, at the above mentioned rate, and is disconnected from the tensioning machine. 6.1.2.4.2. Test procedure Then the clamps-cable assembly is subjected to climatic ageing using 6 weekly cycles of 468 hours each, with an ageing procedure according to paragraphs 6.1.1.3 up to 6.1.1.6 of 7 TD DMKLD-211/29.08.1997 (see also HD 626 S1:1996/Part 2, paragraph 2.5.1 and Table 25.1.1). ‘Ageing is performed in a special chamber at (maximum) temperature (70 2 2) °C.
