ARCHIE’S SWEET SHOP

Mr. and Mrs. Brown are Richard and Archie’s parents.
Archie is 12 years old and Richard is 17 years old.
Every day, Mr. and Mrs. Brown go to work at 9 o’clock,
and they come back home at 6 o’clock in the afternoon.
Every morning, Mr. and Mrs. Brown get up at 6 o’clock,
they get dressed and they brush their teeth. Archie
and Richard get up at 7:30. They always have breakfast
together at 8 o’clock. They have coffee and milk and eat
fruits, bread and eggs.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown leave the house at 9, but Archie
and Richard stay home, because they are on holidays.
Richard works on his motorbike in the morning, then
he and Archie have lunch, and then Richard goes back
to work with his motorbike. Archie plays with his dog in
the morning but then he gets bored.
One day, he goes and asks Richard “Richard, can I help
you?” Richard says “No! Go away.” Archie asks again:
“Please, can I help?”. “No!” says Richard, “Go to the living
room and read a book”. Archie goes into the living room
and looks at one book. “Mmm… It looks interesting”,
Archie says. The book is called “How to make sweets”.
Archie starts reading the book and suddenly says “I have
a great idea!!”. He puts the book on the table and runs to
his bedroom. He opens his saving box and looks into it: “I
have a lot of coins… I can do it!” thinks Archie. He takes
the coins out of the box and runs with them. He goes out
of his house, but Richard doesn’t see him. He is too busy
working on his motorbike.
Archie goes to the shop and buys some things: chocolate,
brown sugar, white sugar, apples, butter, eggs...
“Goodbye, coins” says Archie with a smiling face “Hello
sweets”.
Archie returns to his house with two really big bags.
Richard can’t see him because he is still working on his
motorbike.
Archie's starts reading the book. First chapter: “How to
make chocolate balls”. “Lets see… I need chocolate,
butter and sugar. Yes, chocolate, butter, sugar and the
yellow of an egg“. He starts working, cooking the
chocolate balls. It's very hot in the kitchen but he looks
very happy. After the chocolate balls, Archie makes
toffee, which is brown sugar and butter. Then he puts an
apple into the toffee: “Mmm, a toffee apple! I really like
toffee apples”.
He makes lollipops and squares. Red, yellow and green
lollipops and squares. Chocolate balls, toffee apples,
toffee & chocolate, lollipops and squares and pink sugar
sticks. Now Archie can have a sweet shop!
Archie cleans the kitchen, picks up the sweets, takes
them into the garden, then into the greenhouse and says
”Now this is my sweet shop. My perfect sweet shop. I just
need a sign for my shop. I can paint a sign”. He thinks
Richard can give him some paint, so he goes to talk to
him.
“I need paint, please Richard!” says Archie. “Why?”
answers Richard. “To paint”, replies Archie. ”Oh”, says
Richard, and he gives Archie the paint pot.
Archie paints a sign. Red words on a white paper. “WANT
TO EAT? COME AND BUY A SWEET IN ARCHIE’S
SHOP”. He puts the sign on the door and goes inside, to
his shop.
That afternoon, a car stops at Archie’s door. Two children
are in the car. “Look!”, they shout. ”A sweet shop,
Grandma”, says a small girl, while she points to Archie’s
sign. “Please buy me a sweet”, she says. “A pink sugar
stick and an orange lollipop, please”, says grandma. She
gives him two coins. Archie smiles and he gives a pink
sugar stick and an orange lollipop to the small girl.
“Thanks, grandma!”, says the small girl.
Every morning, after Mr. and Mrs. Brown leave the
house, Archie cooks his sweets. He takes them to the
shop and cleans the shop’s glass, while Richard
works on his motorbike. People come to Archie’s shop
and they buy his sweats. Parents buy chocolate balls and
toffee apples for their children. Twice a week, Mary and
Katie buy green lollipops. Every thursday, Mike and his
grandma buy some chocolates. They all give the coins to
Archie.
One day, Richard stops working and decides to watch
TV. He opens the door, goes into the house and into the
kitchen. When he sees the kitchen he thinks “Oh my God,
what happened here?”, while he puts his hand to his
head. The kitchen is very dirty this time.
“Archie”, he shouts. “Archiiieee!”. Richard runs into the
garden and sees people there. They are eating sweets.
“Archie!”, shouts Richard. He runs to the greenhouse.
“Archie” he goes in- “I'm calling you”.
Richard goes and sees Archie counting his coins. He
looks up. “Oh, hello Richard!” says Archie. “Look at my
coins. I have lots of them” he says.
“NO!”, says Richard. “Come and look at the kitchen, now!.
The kitchen is really messy, dirty. Now Richard and
Archie have to clean it. “Goodbye sweet shop” says
Archie “Hello Kitchen”. “Yes. Hello kitchen” says Richard.
“The kitchen is clean now. But look at the time!” says
Richard. “Mum and Dad come in at 6 o’clock”.
“Oh, no” says Archie, “the sign is on the door”. He runs
down to the door and takes the sign away. He runs up to
the house because it's now 6 o’clock.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown arrive. “Hello children”, they say. “Hi,
Mum” says Richard, “Hi, Dad”, says Archie. “Tea, dad?”
says Richard. “Yes, please” replies Mr. Brown. They
always have tea together at 6 o’clock. “The kitchen is
very clean“, says Mrs. Brown.
“Come and have your tea, dear” says Mr Brown. “Yes,
come on, mum”, says Archie.
“What’s this?” says Mrs Brown, looking at Archie’s sign:
“WANT TO EAT? COME AND BUY A SWEET IN
ARCHIE’S SHOP”.
“What is it?” says Mr. Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Brown smile.
“What's this sign Archie?” They look at Richard, Richard
looks at Archie. “Oh, dear”, says Archie… and they all
laugh together.

We will ask them if they liked the story

Retelling:

order to guide the retelling, we will focus on the words/phrases highlighted in the text
(bold and underlined). Participation will be controlled by the TT.

In order to retell the story we will show SS the previous images we use when we tell
the story for the first time, and we will prepare some others in case they don’t
remember what we ask them (eg: a picture with some people having lunch).

T- Now we are going to tell the story again. This time, you will have to tell the story
with us, ok?
