I had no idea what to anticipate when I started the unit HEN105 English Writing: Grammar

and Composition. I knew we'd be studying about grammar and how to improve our writing
skills, but I wasn't sure how this would help me understand myself as a writer. As the lessons
continued, though, I began to realise how the many parts of grammar and composition might
be applied to my own work.

In a variety of ways, this course has aided me in developing my understanding of myself as a

writer. To begin with, it has made me more conscious of the significance of grammar and
punctuation in writing. I've always known how important grammar is, but this unit has really
emphasised how important it is in speaking clearly and effectively. Grammar is vital not only
for making your writing appear professional, but it may also completely distort the meaning
of what you're trying to express.

One of the most useful things I learnt was the numerous ways in which words may be used to
construct sentences in English. This was quite beneficial to me because I had difficulty
logically structuring my sentences. After learning how different words may be used to convey
meaning, I was able to start building my sentences in a more concise and effective manner.
For example, I discovered that utilising simple, common language is sometimes more
effective than using huge, complicated terminology. Simple words are easier to understand
and comprehend since they flow more naturally. I also realised how crucial it is to employ
strong verbs when writing. Strong verbs help to make sentences more powerful and effective
by adding more meaning and emotion.

In general, understanding the numerous ways that words may be used to form sentences aided
my writing talents greatly. It assisted me in identifying my areas of weakness and
determining how I might improve my sentence building. It also taught me the importance of
using simple, common terms and strong verbs in my writing.

Learning how to write good paragraphs was another thing that I found useful. I had always
battled with this since it was tough for me to organise my ideas into a logical paragraph. I
was able to start organising my ideas in a more logical manner after learning the
fundamentals of writing good paragraphs. This made it much easier for me to create clear and
short paragraphs.
For example, I learned that each paragraph should have a major concept or subject phrase.
This is the sentence that summarises the topic of the paragraph. Having a key theme keeps
the paragraph on track and focused. I also learned how important it is to have supporting
evidence while writing a paragraph. Examples, data, or expert quotations might all be used as
supporting evidence. Using supporting evidence helps to strengthen and convince your case.
In general, understanding how to write effective paragraphs was tremendously beneficial to
my overall writing skills. It taught me how to organise my thoughts into a logical paragraph
that flows nicely. It also showed me how important it is to have a core argument and use
supporting evidence when writing a paragraph.

In addition, this lesson has helped me grasp the many writing styles and when each is
acceptable. I'd always recognised the distinctions between academic and creative writing, but
I had no idea how many varied styles existed within these two broad categories. I had no
idea, for example, that 'persuasive' writing existed, or that there were so many distinct ways
to organise an argument. This information will come in handy in the future, both when
writing university essays and while participating in debates or conversations with others.

Finally, this training has helped me to refine my own writing style. I had never given much
thought to my particular writing style before this class; I simply wrote whatever came readily
to me at the time. After studying other writing styles and analysing my own work, I've come
to realise that I have my own unique way of expressing myself on paper. This self-awareness
is critical because it allows me to better utilise my writing style, such as adjusting it to a
certain audience or goal.

Overall, I found the unit HEN105 English Writing: Grammar and Composition to be highly
beneficial to my development as a writer. The various components of grammar and
composition that we studied in the class helped me identify my writing strengths and
shortcomings. This knowledge has been really beneficial in helping me enhance my general
writing abilities.
