ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the cause and effect of online class in
mathematics students in terms of attitude towards mathematics. The participants would
be 10th grade students today of my previous high school, the computer program that will
be used in this study is google classroom. Google classroom is a free web service
develop by google for schools that aims to simplify creating, distributing, and grading
assignments, the primary purpose of this is to streamline the process of sharing files
between teachers and students. The student will work independently on the google
classroom with given instruction. I will also take an attitude survey to gauge their
feelings about the online class set-up. This information were going to use to assist me in
planning and implementing online class and see whether their attitude in different in
normal class vs the online class. I chose to study math because I enjoy teaching
mathematics because mathematics is the only subject that I found that many students
fear and feel inadequate.

INTRODUCTION

While thinking I often wonder to myself what is the cause and the effect of online class in
the students, what are they attitude towards it. My research will answer these by looking
at the effect of online class in the attitude of the most of the students. Teaching problem
solving in one of the hardest concept for students to grasp especially in word problem.
Students generally have a difficult tie determining what information they need or which
operation they should perform. Difficulty comes from the inability to understand the
wording of the problem from the lack of background knowledge and the meager help
students receive from home. Students in grade 8 and 9 shown progress but to those
grade 10 are still struggling to meet the standards in math. This problem is the reason I
decided to look for the cause and effect of online class.

RELATED LITERATURE

“Many people regard mathematics as the crown jewel of science, yet math historically
lack one of the defining trappings of science. Mathematics, by contrast, concerns not
physical landscape but an idealized, abstract world. For exploring that world,
mathematicians have traditionally had only intuition.”(Klarreich, 2004, p 266). Now
computers starting to give mathematics the lab instruments they have been missing. A
study by Klarreich (2004) discussed the role computers play in mathematics. The authors
stated that computers power is enabling mathematicians to make quantum leaps into
mathematics. Computers only take seconds to calculate and create beautiful graphics of
three dimensional shapes. Computers can solve complex problems and computers can
remediate students in mathematics.

A study by Leigh (2004) discusses the idea that games promote cognitive and problem
solving skills. The paper states that the most children are “masters of the game”. Young
children can sit at a computer for hours on hour playing computer games. Therefore,
since children like playing games, teacher should create computer math games so that
students may practice computation on the computer.

METHOD

My participants are 10th grade of my previous high school, I’ll develop questions in
advance or created in advance which they can answer the same question in the same
order, then make or develop a scale(rubrics) that I can used to grade the answer of the
participants. And send it to the participants, since I already have a question to be given I
can easily compare and contrast their different opinion.
