From the article “The Importance of Game Based Learning in Modern Education”,
modern teaching aids are important and most preferred in the technological age. The growing
usage of digital games and applied sciences into learning environments has affected both the
teaching of educators and the learning of students. Game-Based Learning (GBL) can be
successfully used to improve both learning and teaching. It allows learners to discover new
methods of working towards achieving goals and objectives in an interactive manner.
Playing math games together can also help to get a better sense of the students’ strengths and
challenges. And if a student got correct answers playing a math game after spending so much
time in it, it can boost confidence.
Games are also just a nice change from the math schoolworks students do. But while math
games are fun, they’re best for reviewing and practicing, not teaching new concepts. To teach
new things, teachers use specific strategies. They often need to spend a lot of time explaining
the concept. But they might use a game to help review it.
(Lepper and Cordova, 1992) have found that rewriting a lesson with a story context combined
with a challenge for the student to overcome (in other words, making it into a game)
significantly improves the learning performance of children. Games like MathScore have
evidences that allow students to focus and learn better in mathematics.
According to the article from “Nrich” by Jenni Way, students can work independently of the
teacher. The rules of the game and the children's motivation usually keep them on task. It also
allow children to operate at different levels of thinking and to learn from each other. In a group
of children playing a game, one child might be encountering a concept for the first time,
another may be developing his/her understanding of the concept, a third consolidating
previously learned concepts which help them to understand more.
Most of the students think that Mathscore is a very helpful instrument in their endeavor in
understanding mathematics and is helpful in developing their skills in computations and solving
problems. The top three benefits are, first, Mathscore helps you master basic knowledge in
mathematics. Second, it helps you recall past lessons, and lastly, it assesses your mathematical
skills.
Based from a testimony from Chicago Public School in United States, they have been using this
wonderful program for several years now. In the last three years that they have used
mathscore school wide, they have seen a 20% gain in percentile rank for grades 3-7 on their
NWEA tests. The classes that used it the most are the classes that showed the greatest gains.
Their 6th and 7th grade teachers who had the largest gains this year are convinced that the
reason their students showed the most growth is because of Mathscore.
Once students start seeing their own improvement they get excited and now you see a
completely different math student in their class. Students are now able to follow math lessons
(with many students having learned the concepts being taught on Mathscore). Homework takes
less time and test scores rise. Students who used to lack confidence and would quit on
problems now persevere and find ways to solve problems that only a few of our top students
were able to solve before we started using mathscore.
