Module 8

What a state is.

• A State is an autonomous, sovereign government that exercises power over a certain

geographically defined and bounded territory, typically with well-defined borders that are

accepted by other governments on a global scale. It is a group of people who are

permanently in control of that designated area.

Describe the role that the interstate system plays in the international scene and identify its impact

on the Philippines.

• In the interstate system, all states are defined through their relationship to other states or

through participation in the world economy, and that divisions between states help to divide

the world into a core, periphery and semi-periphery (Wallerstein, 1984). Interstate helps

the Philippines to join the global market, and also to benefits from it. With trade of goods

to other nations, Philippines will also be beneficiary of that. Also with the interstate, our

country can enjoy the security of other countries because of their interests to us.

Cite specific instances wherein the global interstate system affects any situation in the Philippines.

• One of the examples is the war between Ukraine and Russia. The Philippines, is widely

affected by this war. Oil prices are in hike. And because of the oil price hike, our basic

goods are also in high price. Another is the stock market. If the stocks are high, are

investments in the country will be many. But if the international stocks will be low, our

economy also will be low.
