1. ENGAGE

At your age now, can you already think of something that you consider
important in your life? You may notice that your possible answers maybe the same
with others or maybe different from others because you have different life
situations or concerns in life.
So, identify the realities of your life that are important to you. Write each one
of them in the small circles surrounding the question What is important to me.

Your answers tell us that these are the important realities of your life now.
These are words that give us an idea what you are concerned with or what
you are thinking about. These words are what we call nouns.

Nouns are words to name a person, thing, idea or anything that is seen
around to help people identify what they talk and think about.

The Kinds of Nouns

1. Common noun names any one of the class of people, places, or things. This
kind of noun is not capitalized.

2. Proper noun names a specific person, place, or things. This kind of noun is
capitalized.

3. Collective noun names a group of people, objects, animals or things. When the
members of a collective noun are performing an action as individuals, use a
plural verb; the group is not acting together as a unit. When all the members
of a collective noun are performing an action as a unit, use a singular verb.

4. Count nouns names things that can be counted like box, house, chair, table,
slippers.

5. Mass noun or non-count noun names things that cannot be counted like rice,
flour, sugar, water, coffee.

6. Abstract noun names ideas, concepts, and emotions like honesty, imagination,
love, anger, compassion, fear, and respect.

7. Concrete noun names something that can be identified through one of the
five senses (taste, touch, sight, hearing, or smell) like wallet, flowers,
trees, paper, and many others.

8. Compound noun is a noun made up of two or more words but refer only to one
item like horseback, classroom, network and bandwidth.

2. Re-write the paragraph above by supplying the appropriate nouns to


complete it. How is it now ? Do you understand it now?

3. What do you think is the best action to take to avoid possible problems in
producing incoherent and illogical kind of paragraph? Give at least two ways.

ELABORATE: Using the social media ( Fb, IG, Tweeter)

1. Using the social media ( FB, IG, TWEETER platform), look for one POST only (
be sure, you don’t include owner’s profile for Data Privacy Law) that shows
negligence of appropriate NOUNS to used or that shows incorrectness of nouns
used.

A. Identifying Nouns. Identify the nouns in each of the following sentences.


Then identify its kind.

1. Today the world is challenged by the virus Covid 19.


2. People have experienced high level of anxiety, fear and paranoia.
3. The government created special committees to find solution to this problem.
4. Almost all hospitals are already occupied by patients with Covid 19 and non-
Covid 19 patients.
5. All people are praying for this pandemic to end.

B. Supplying nouns. In the following sentences, fill in the missing word with the
kind of noun requested to complete the sentence.
1. ( Proper noun) invented the (common noun).
2. A television transmission is called a ( compound noun).
3. Because we have ( compound noun), we are able to watch more than 60
channels.
4. Before the ( common noun), people had to listen to the radio for news.
5. My favorite baseball ( collective noun) is (proper noun).
