CHE2003 CHEMICAL PRODUCT DESIGN

DIGITAL ASSIGNMENT 1

DUE DATE 27 AUGUST 2022

1. Go into a foodstore, a drugstore, or a hardware store to identify three potential products.

Describe in a sentence or two what need each new product would fill.

2. In order to avoid the rapidly increasing water charges made by utility companies and to ensure a
completely pure supply of domestic water, we want to design a system that makes a typical family
home self-sufficient in water. Rain water will be collected from the roof, and this must supply all the
house's water needs. List needs and rank them in order of importance. Quantify these needs.

3. There is considerable interest in producing biodegradable plastics from renewable feedstocks.

What are the major markets for such a product likely to be? Who are the customers? List the major
needs that will be necessary to satisfy if such products are to succeed. Suggest a benchmark.

4. Doesn't it really irritate you when you get back to the veranda after a hard day on the beach and
mix yourself a cool, refreshing cocktail, only to find it has been diluted beyond recognition by the
melting ice? This problem must be solved. It is proposed to manufacture a device to produce the
perfect cocktail from ingredients at ambient temperature. Draw up the specifications for what this
device must be able to achieve. Be as quantitative as possible.

5. It is now widely accepted that increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are causing
warming of the planet by preventing the escape of infrared radiation into outer space. This is a
kinetic problem rather than an equilibrium one. Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere dissolves into
the sea and is then deposited as limestone, either by precipitation or via secretion into animal shells.
The capacity of the sea to hold carbon dioxide is vastly larger than the amount of carbon held in
reserves of fossil fuels, and the amount of carbon locked away in limestone is many thousand times
larger again. Projects are under consideration for speeding the transfer of carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere to the oceans and rocks. Suggest criteria that should be used to asses these projects and
rank these criteria.
