Preface for Giuliani’s 24 Prime Lezioni, Parte prima,

op. 139
This is a modern urtext re-engraved edition of these 24 Prime Lezioni, Parte
prima (24 First Lessons, part 1), op. 139.
Recent research shows that each of these six pieces, following their earliest
known editions, should properly be called Sonatina, not Lezione. They were all
first published in Naples by the publisher Girard in 1828, that is to say in the
year before the composer’s death, while he was himself in that city. The first
three pieces are nos. 1, 2 and 3 of the Tre Sonatine published by Girard, while
the last three pieces are found in another Girard edition with a title-page which
covers several different publications headed Rondoncini e Variazioni Capricci e
Sonatine, in which these three pieces appear and must surely be counted among
the Sonatine. In about 1840, that is to say eleven years after Giuliani’s death,
Ricordi in Milan took the six pieces and published them as 24 Prime Lezioni,
Parte prima, op. 139. It appears, then, that the opus number 139 and the name
of Lezioni both may well have been given by the publisher Ricordi and not by
Giuliani, and that the proper title of each of these six pieces should in fact be
Sonatina.
It also appears from the title of Ricordi’s publication that he intended to
publish 24 “Lezioni” in all, but only these six and no more are known to have
been published.
 The Girard publications were described by Mario Torta in his article “Le
edizioni napoletane di Mauro Giuliani” in II Fronimo in 1994. I am most
grateful to Marco Riboni for information about this matter.
No. 3 has no tempo indication in the original.
