Extractive and Crude Fiber Content

 Calculate for the % extractive of a dried plant leaves weighing

20.1801g. The leaves were macerated with 80% alcohol and
filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness yielding 1.1715g
residue.

Given :
Wt.of sample= 20.1801 g
Wt.of residue = 1.1715 g

Formula :

% extractive = weight of residue x 100

Weight of sample

%= 1.1715 g / 20.1801 x 100

= 5.81%

 Santol bark weighing 10.040g was macerated with alcohol for 2

days. It was filtered and evaporated to dryness until a thick
paste residue was obtained. Residue weighed 2.0030g. What is
the ‘extractive’ collected & compute for % recovery.

Given :
Weight of residue = 2.0030 g
Weight of sample = 10.040 g
Formula :

% extractive = weight of residue x 100

Weight of sample

% = 2.0030 g/ 10.040 g x 100

= 19.95 %

 A 2.10-g cashew nut was extracted using by reflux method using

hexane as solvent. Then the filtrate was collected & evaporated
spontaneously in a dish. Compute for the % extractive with the ff
data:

wt of dish = 1. 2895g
Wt of dish + residue = 1. 3018g

Given :

Weight of residue = 1.3018 – 1.2895 = 0.0123 g

Weight of sample = 2.10 g

Formula :
% extractive = weight of residue x 100
Weight of sample

% = 0.0123 g/ 2.10 g x 100

= 0.58 %
