13
A requirement of fault-free operation and fulfillment of any rights to claim under guar-
antee is that you adhere to the information in the operating instructions. Read the 14
operating instructions before you start operating the unit!
The operating instructions contain important information about service and should
15
be kept near the unit.
16
Designated use 17
MOVIDRIVE® units are intended for industrial and commercial use for operating
AC asynchronous motors with squirrel-cage rotors or permanent-field AC synchronous
18
motors. These motors must be suitable for operation with frequency inverters. No other
loads may be connected to the units.
MOVIDRIVE® units have been designed for stationary installation in control cabinets.
19
Observe all information on the technical data and the permitted conditions where the unit
is operated. 20
Do not start up the unit (take it into operation in the designated fashion) until you have
established that the machine complies with the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC and that the 21
conformity of the end product has been determined in accordance with the Machinery
Directive 98/37/EEC (with reference to EN 60204).
22
Operating envi- The following uses are prohibited unless the units are expressly designed for the
ronment purpose:
• In potentially explosive atmospheres
• In areas exposed to harmful oils, acids, gases, vapors, dust, radiation, etc.
• In non-stationary applications that are subject to mechanical vibration and shock
loads in excess of the requirements in EN 61800-5-1.

2 System Description 1
The types of DC link connection with or without regenerative power supply described in
this documentation apply to the following devices: 2
• MOVIDRIVE® MD_60A
• MOVIDRIVE® MDX60B/61B 3
®
• MOVIDRIVE compact
• MOVITRAC® 07 (MC07A055-5A3-4 ... 450-503-4) 4
• MOVITRAC® B (MC07B055-5A3-4 ... 450-503-4)
The following sections cover the MOVIDRIVE® MDX60B/61B drive inverter only.
5
6
MOVIDRIVE® drive inverters can be interconnected using the DC link circuit or a regen-
erative power supply unit. This features allows the inverters to exchange regenerative
power among themselves, which means that less electrical energy is converted into 7
waste heat via the braking resistors. As a result, this feature not only allows you to save
energy, but means that you can install fewer braking resistors. As a rule, only the largest 8
unit in the group has to be equipped with a braking resistor.
9
2.1 Two types of DC link connection
We differentiate between two types of DC link connection: 10
1. DC link connection without regenerative power supply unit.
2. DC link connection with regenerative power supply unit MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A. 11

More than two MOVIDRIVE® drive inverters can be connected via the DC link with a
regenerative power supply unit MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A. To determine the permitted
number of inverters, refer to the project planning information.
The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative power supply unit can be used with MOVID-
RIVE® drive inverters operating in regenerative mode as an alternative to braking resis-
tors. The prerequisite is a stable supply system.
The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative power supply unit supplies the DC link circuit
of the MOVIDRIVE® drive inverter with motor power from the supply system and returns
regenerative power to the supply system from the DC link circuit. A supply system rec-
tifier is used to supply the motor power, and an inverter is used to supply the regenera-
tive power.
The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative power supply unit does not require an auxil-
iary power supply or control signals. MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A signals that it is ready for
operation via a ready signal and a ready signal indicator.
With the MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A0370/0750 regenerative power units (sizes 3 and 4),
you can inhibit the inverter of the regenerative power supply unit using terminal X3:3 (in-
hibit). Before inhibiting the unit make sure that all connected drives have been shut
down; that is, regenerative power cannot flow back into the system.
Take the following information into account when performing sequence control in your
system:
• MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A0370/0750 units (sizes 3 and 4) display the operating status
"Ready" even when they are inhibited.
• MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A1320 units (size 6) display the operating status "Error" even
when they are inhibited.
If you inhibit the inverter during no-load operation, MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A generates
fewer losses and operates with lower power supply disturbances.
Features of a • Energy balance: Regenerative power is fed back into the supply system instead of
regenerative being converted into waste heat.
power supply unit • Less installation work for several inverter (network and braking resistor connections).

inverter with when there is a disruption in the supply system.
braking resistors
• Reduction in use of control cabinet space and fan power if the braking resistor was
previously installed in the control cabinet.
The CE mark on the nameplate indicates conformity with the Low Voltage Directive 8
73/23/EEC and the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC. We can provide a copy of the declara-
tion of conformity on request.

4 Project Planning
4.1 DC link connection without regenerative power supply unit
Only two MOVIDRIVE® drive inverters are to be connected via the DC link without a
regenerative power supply unit MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A.
You can implement the DC link connection without a regenerative power supply unit
using the following connection types:
• Connection type A: Both inverters are connected to the supply system.
• Connection type B: Only one of the two inverters is connected to the supply system.
Connection In connection type A, both inverters are connected to the supply system via one input
type A contactor and one fuse at the supply end.

• If the two inverters are not grounded by one but by separate fuses, all poles of both 7
fuses must disconnect and trigger together, otherwise one of the two inverters can
suffer irreparable damage.
8
• The larger MOVIDRIVE® must be equipped with a sufficiently large braking resistor.
Make sure to consult the notes on selecting the correct braking resistor in the
MOVIDRIVE® MDX60B/61B system manual. 9
• The DC link carries a high DC voltage (up to 900 V). Use a suitable cable with twisted
cores that is capable of withstanding the high direct voltage carried by the DC link 10
connection. We recommend using prefabricated cables from SEW for the DC link
connection (→ “Prefabricated cables for the DC link connection” on page 31).
11
• The maximum permitted length of the DC link connection is 2 m. In accordance with
VDE 0100 part 430 there is no need for fusing with a cross section reduction up to a
cable length of 3 m if the risk of a short circuit can be reduced to a minimum and the 12
cable is not routed close to combustible substances.
• Observe country-specific and system-specific regulations when fusing the DC link or 13
motor cables.

System The regenerative power unit must be equipped with a line choke. 1
prerequisites • For MDR60A0370 the line choke ND085-013.
• For MDR60A0750 the line choke ND200-0033. 2
• The MDR60A1320 comes equipped with line choke.
3
To ensure fault-free operation of MOVIDRIVE®
MDR60A0370/0750, the relative short-
circuit voltage uK at the unit mains connection must not exceed the following values: 4
Rated supply voltage Vmains Permitted relative short-circuit voltage uK
AC 400 V < 6.0 % 5
AC 460 V < 5.2 %
AC 500 V < 4.8 % 6
MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A must not be operated unless the uK values specified in the 7
table are observed.
8
Determining the uK The exact values must be determined by measurement if you do not have precise data
values for determining the uK value. 9
The inductance of the existing mains connection (Lmains, phase – phase) must be added
to the inductance of the specified line choke LND in order to calculate the effective total
10
inductance LG. The effective uK value is then calculated according to the following for-
mula:
uK = (LG × 2π × fmains × Imains × √3) / Umains = (Lmains + 1,6 × LND) × k 11
The inductance of the existing power supply connection can be measured or calculated 18
using the data on the high-voltage transformer and the cable between the transformer
and the power supply connection of the MDR.
19
Lmains = Ltransf + Lcable
The inductance of the cable (Lcable, is approximately 0.7 µH/m.
20
The effective inductance of the high-voltage transformer (→ nameplate) is calculated on
the basis of the data on the high-voltage transformer using the following formula:
21
Ltransf = (uKT × Umains2) / (2π × fmains × ST) = (uKT/ST) × k2
Ltransf = Effective inductance of the high-voltage transformer [H]
22
ST = Apparent power of the high-voltage transformer [VA] (→ nameplate)
uKT = Short-circuit voltage of the high voltage transformer [V] (→ nameplate)
k2 = Umains2 / (2π × fmains)
The following factor k2 is used for the various types of power supply system:
Umains = AC 400 V, fmains = 50Hz Umains = AC 460 V, fmains = 60Hz Umains = AC 500 V, fmains = 50Hz
k2 = 509 V2s k2 = 561 V2s k2 = 795 V2s
Example:
Umains = AC 400 V, fmains = 50 Hz, ST = 250 kVA, uKT = 4 %
Lcable = 0.07 mH (100 m), LND = 0.03 mH (ND200-0033)
Ltransf = [0.04/(250 × 103 VA)] × 509 V2s = 0.08 mH
uK = (0.08 × 10–3 H + 0.07 × 10–3 H + 0.048 × 10–3 H) × 159.2 H–1= 0.031 = 3.1 %
Result:
The uK value of 3.1 % is permitted; MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A may be operated.
When dimensioning the supply power of the incoming power supply system, take into
account the power required by the MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A regenerative power supply
unit listed in the following table. If you operate four MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A 0370 units
at the same time, the power required will be 440 kVA.
Input fuses and Always comply with the regulations issued by specific countries and for specific
supply system machines regarding fusing and the selection of cable cross sections.
lead
Line protection types in the operating classes gL, gG:
• Rated fusing voltage ≥ Rated supply voltage
• Depending on the inverter utilization, rated fusing currents have to be designed for
100% of the rated inverter currents.
Fusing Observe country-specific and system-specific regulations when fusing the cable 19
cross sections and, if necessary, the guidelines for UL-compliant installation.

1) With an ambient temperature of 25 °C; AC 400 V rated voltage; DC link current = 100 % inverter load
The connection leads to the braking resistor carry a high DC voltage (approx. 900 V).
The braking resistor cables must be suitable for this high DC voltage.
Cable length
• The data in this section applies to BW... / BW...-T and BW...-P braking resistors.
• The maximum permitted cable length between MOVIDRIVE® and the braking
resistor is 100 m.
Parallel connec- Two braking resistors must be connected in parallel for some inverter/resistor com-
tion binations. In this case, the trip current must be set on the bimetallic relay to twice the
value of IF entered in the table.
Peak braking Due to the DC link voltage and the resistance value, the peak braking power can be less
power than the load capacity of the braking resistor. The peak braking power is determined as
follows:

Tightening • Only use genuine connection elements. Note the permitted tightening torques
torques of power terminals for MOVIDRIVE® drive inverters.
Minimum clear- • Observe the minimum wire bending spaces in accordance with EN 61800-5-1.
ance and mount- • Leave at least 100 mm clearance at the top and bottom for optimum cooling. Make
ing position sure air circulation in the clearance is not impaired by cables or other installation
material. Do not install any heat-sensitive components within 300 mm of the top of
the unit.
• Ensure an unobstructed cooling air supply and make sure that air heated by other
units cannot be drawn in or reused.
• There is no need for clearance at the sides. You can line up the units directly next to
one another.
• Only install the units vertically. You must not install them horizontally, tilted or upside
down.
Separate cable • Route power cables and electronics cables in separate cable ducts. 1
ducts
Fuses and earth- • Install fuses at the start of the supply system lead after the supply bus junction. 2
leakage circuit • MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A0370/0750 can cause direct current in the protective earth
breakers (PE). If an earth-leakage circuit breaker is used for a direct or indirect touch guard, 3
only connect an earth-leakage circuit breaker of type B on the power supply end of
the MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A0370/0750.
4
If you do not install an earth-leakage circuit breaker, you must apply alternative pro-
tective measures in accordance with EN 61800-5-1, for example:
5
– Disconnection from the environment by means of double or reinforced insulation
– Disconnection from the supply system by means of a transformer
6

To protect the regenerative power unit against thermal overload, the ready signal
must be used to disconnect input contactor K11 from the regenerative power unit.
The following diagram shows how the ready signal (ready) from the regenerative power
supply unit must be connected to the "Power supply system on" binary input of the
inverter in order to perform evaluation in accordance with responses B... D.

• Response B: Turn off the inverters connected to the regenerative power unit 1
immediately
MOVIDRIVE®: The ready message is applied to a digital input of all the connected 2
inverters. Set this input to "Power supply ON" (P60_). This setting will give you the
option to turn off the inverter (P521 "Power off response = /CONTROLLER INHIB-
IT"). Set the "Power off response time" (P520) to 0 seconds. 3
Inverter parameter settings:
– P520 (Power off response time) = "0 sec." 4
– P521 (Power off response) = "/CONTROLLER INHIBIT"
– P60_ (binary input) = "MAINS ON" 5
MOVITRAC® 07: Connect terminal X3:4 "Ready" on MDR60A to a binary input pro-
grammed to "/Controller inhibit." 6
• Response C: Turn off the inverters connected to the regenerative power sup- 7
ply unit after delay time (not for MOVITRAC® 07):
The following possibility is available if supply system failures during motor operation 8
should not immediately give rise to an inverter switch-off, e.g. if the power supply sys-
tem quality is poor:
9
Proceed as described in response B. Set the "Power off response time" (P520) to
≥ 300 ms so that the ON delay (200 ms) of the regenerative power supply unit is
bypassed once supply voltage has returned. Supply system failures that do not last 10
longer than the power off response time minus 200 ms do not cause the inverters to
disconnect.
11
If power supply failures should not cause inverters to disconnect in regenerative
operation, the inverters must be equipped with braking resistors.
12
Inverter parameter settings:
– P520 (Power off response time) = "0.3 ... 5.0 sec."
13
– P521 (Power off response) = "/CONTROLLER INHIBIT"
– P60_ (binary input) = "MAINS ON"
14
• Response D: Bring the drives to a controlled stop
15
MOVIDRIVE®: The inverters must be fitted with braking resistors in order to allow the
drives to be brought to a controlled stop (emergency stop ramp) in the event of a
power failure or a fault in the unit (→ sec. 4.3). 16
Proceed as described for response B. The emergency stop ramp must be initiated
immediately and set as short as possible so that the drive is still in regenerative 17
operation when it comes to a stop. Set the "Power off response time" (P520) to 0 s.
Inverter parameter settings: 18
– P137 (Emergency ramp) = "xxx sec."
– P520 (Power off response time) = "0 sec."
19
– P521 (Power off response) = "EMERGENCY STOP"
– P60_ (binary input) = "MAINS ON"
MOVITRAC® 07: Connect terminal X3:4 "Ready" on MDR60A to a binary input pro- 20
grammed to "Enable/stop" and set the stop ramp (P136).

power supply unit (→ sec. "Operating characteristics").
6
Inverter The power off response does not produce an error message in the inverter (no reset
required). Other errors, such as"UZ overvoltage" must be reset. Program a binary input 7
on the inverter to "RESET" for that purpose. The reset is activated by a positive edge
("0" → "1" signal). A reset can also be achieved by switching the supply voltage off and 8
on again.

Inhibit inverter of To keep the power supply disturbances to a minimum, you can inhibit the inverter of the
regenerative regenerative power supply unit using a DC 24 V signal at terminal X3:3 (inhibit). The
power supply unit minimum blocking time is one second, i.e. if the DC 24 V signal is active for less than
1 second, the regenerative power unit remains inhibited for one second.

General During operation, regenerative power supply units according to their enclosure can have 4
information live, bare or moveable parts as well as hot surfaces.
Removing necessary covers, improper use, incorrect installation or operation may result 5
in severe damages and injuries. Consult the documentation for additional information.
Only qualified personnel are to carry out assignments involving transportation, installa-
6
tion and startup as well as maintenance (observe IEC364 or CENELEC HD384 or DIN
VDE0100 and IEC report 664 or DIN VDE0110 and national accident prevention guide-
lines). 7
Qualified personnel in the context of these basic safety notes are all persons familiar
with installation, assembly, startup and operation of the product and possess the neces- 8
sary qualifications.
9
Designated use Regenerative power supply units are components intended for installation in electrical
systems or machines. In case of installation in machines, startup of the regenerative
10
power supply units (i.e. start of regular operation) is prohibited until it is determined that
the machine meets the requirements set forth in EC guideline 83/392/EEC (machine
guideline); observe EN 60204. 11
Startup (i.e. start of regular operation) is permitted with adherence to EMC guideline
only. The regenerative power supply units meet the requirements set forth in low voltage 12
guideline 73/23/EEC. The harmonized standards of the prEN 50178/DIN VDE0160
series in connection with EN 60439-1/DIN VDE0660 part 500 and EN 60146/DIN
VDE0558 are applied to regenerative power supply units. The technical data and the 13
information on electrical operating conditions are listed on the nameplate as well as the
documentation; they have to be observed under all circumstances. 14
Transportation, Observe the notes on transportation, storage and proper handling. Protect the regener- 15
putting into ative power supply unit from improper strain. Especially during transportation and han-
storage dling, the components are not to be deformed or insulation spaces altered. The units
16
contain components that can be damaged by electrostatic energy that could be
destroyed in case of improper handling. Avoid contact with electronic components and
contacts. Do not start up the unit in case of mechanical defects to electrical and elec- 17
tronic components; it can no longer be guaranteed that applicable standards will be
observed. Observe climatic conditions according to EN 61800-5-1.
18
Installation Installation and cooling of the devices must take place according to the guidelines listed 19
in the corresponding documentation.
Protect the regenerative power supply units from improper strain. Especially during
20
transportation and handling, the components are not to be deformed or insulation spac-
es altered. Avoid contact with electronic components and contacts.
21
22
Regenerative power supply units contain components that can be damaged by electro-
static energy and could be destroyed in case of improper handling. Prevent mechanical
damage or destruction of electric components (may pose health risk!) Do not start up
the unit in case of mechanical defects to electrical or electronic components; it can no
longer be guaranteed that applicable standards will be observed.
Electrical Observe applicable national accident prevention guidelines when working on live parts.
connection Deenergize and secure the system prior to any sort of installation and connection work.
Electrical installation according to pertinent regulations (e.g. line cross sections, fusing,
protective conductor connection). When using regenerative power supply units with fre-
quency inverters but without safety separation from the supply circuit (according to
VDE0100), all control lines have to be included in additional preventive measures (e.g.
double insulation or shielding, grounded and insulated).
You will find notes on EMC compliant installation, such as shielding, grounding, arrange-
ment of filters and routing of lines, in the appendix. Always observe these notes even
with drive inverters bearing the CE marking. The manufacturer of the system or machine
is responsible for maintaining the limits established by the EMC legislation.
Operation Systems with integrated regenerative power supply units must be equipped with addi-
tional monitoring and protection devices according to the applicable safety guidelines,
such as the law governing technical equipment, accident prevention regulations, etc.
Do not touch live components and power connections immediately after separation of
the regenerative power supply units from the supply voltage because there may still be
some charged capacitors. Note the respective reference plates on the frequency
inverter.
Keep all covers and doors closed during operation.
• The regenerative power supply unit is intended for fixed connection only as earth-
leakage currents > 3.5 mA may occur, especially when using filters. The PE conduc-
tor cross section must be at least 10 mm2 copper or a second conductor must be
routed electrically parallel to the main ground (star-shape grounding).
• It is necessary that there is potential equality between the components to be connect-
ed (e.g. by means of an equalizing conductor) when using components that do not
come equipped with isolated inputs / outputs. Otherwise the components can be de-
stroyed by circulating currents.
• The semiconductor of the device must be disconnected to prevent possible destruc-
tion when measuring the insulation according to VDE0100/ part 620. This is permit-
ted by the standard because all devices are subject to a high-voltage test to EN
61800-5-1 during the final control.
• A standard earth leakage circuit breaker (pulse-current sensitive) is not permitted as
the sole protective measure in case of frequency inverter operation with regenerative
power supply unit. In case of frequency inverters with 3-phase input voltage, a direct
component in the fault current can prevent triggering of an earth leakage circuit
breaker in case of ground fault. According to VDE0160 that means an earth leakage
circuit breaker is not permitted as sole protective measure. Additional protective
measures according to VDE0100 part 410 are necessary for TN systems, e.g. pro-
tection by means of overcurrent protective device. Protective separation can be used
if permitted by the necessary power and line length. Consider the following measures
when selecting the earth leakage circuit breaker:
– The standard earth leakage circuit breaker has to meet the new design according
to VDE0664.
– The trip current should be 300 mA or more to prevent premature tripping caused
by the earth-leakage currents of the inverter (ca. 200 mA). Depending on the load,
the motor line length and the use of an radio interference suppression these
earth-leakage currents can be a lot stronger.
5
Qualified Qualified personnel are those persons who have the necessary training, experience,
personnel instructions as well as knowledge of relevant standards and guidelines, accident pre-
vention regulations and operating conditions and have been appointed by that person 6
responsible for safety of the system to carry out their necessary jobs and recognize any
possible danger and prevent it (definition of qualified personnel to IEC 60364). 7

Personal protection
After disconnection from the power supply system, the + (plus) and – (minus) poles will
still carry dangerous voltages for several minutes.
Unit protection
Cyclical switching on and off of the supply voltage at L1, L2 and L3 can result in an over-
load of the input current limitation. Wait for at least one minute between turning the unit
off and on again.
7
Length of the DC • Install the frequency inverter and the regenerative power supply unit as close as pos-
connection sible to each other.
8
• The permitted cable length between frequency inverter and regenerative power sup-
ply unit is not to exceed 5 m (16.4 ft.).
9
• Route the cables very close to each other.
10
Operation with a If only a few consumers operate in a power supply section besides the regenerative
transformer power unit, the transformer must be able to transmit the power not used in this section
to the next voltage level without the voltage becoming excessively high in the section. 11
This means the rated (apparent) power of the transformer must be at least 1.5 times
greater than the (effective) power regenerated from this section to also transmit the har- 12
monics and wattless components of the currents.
These conditions are met in the power supply section shown in following figure when all
13
other consumers are turned off. If the regenerated power is close to the rated power of
the transformer, the uK value of the transformer must be sufficiently small (max. 6 %) to
limit the voltage increase in the power supply section. 14
®
Operation of MOVIDRIVE -MDR60A1320-503-00 units in connection with variable
transformers with a large uK of 10 - 20 % (e.g. in a design as stalled slipring motor) is 15
permitted only if the ratio regenerative power/rated power is considerably smaller.

If you do not follow this method of connection, the inductance will prevent synchroniza-
tion with the power supply system and there may be a voltage increase at the choke
when turning off the unit while current is still flowing. This may damage the regenerative
power supply unit.
• The same holds true when installing additional chokes in the incoming circuit,
which is also prohibited.
• Overvoltages can cause irreparable damage to the connected drive controller
and/or the regenerative power supply unit as well as the other loads!
Cable and trans- The data on current carrying capacity of cables usually refers to copper conductors. Use 1
fer resistors larger cross sections for aluminum conductors due to the higher specific resistance.
For both kinds of conductor material you will have to ensure that the connection points 2
of the conductors are low-resistance and that their number is kept as low as possible.
As shown in the following illustration, too many or too high-resistance terminal connec-
3
tions (∆ U) can result in an excessive voltage drop during driving operation and an
excessive voltage peak in regenerative operation.

Based on a stable power supply [1] with 400 V rated voltage and a regenerative current
11
of 80 A, there will be a voltage loss of 8 V at a poorly designed terminal connection of
100 mΩ. A well designed terminal connection has a transfer resistance of ca. 1 mΩ. 12
There will be a voltage of 456 V in regenerative operation at the power switch with seven
terminal connections.

Connection of It is not permitted to connect additional consumers (e. g. control cabinet fans or air-con-
additional ditioning units) parallel to the drive controller [2] / regenerative power supply unit in front
consumers of a common power switch (→ following figure) . When triggering the switch, there is no
connection to the power supply system [1] that represents the power drain and the syn-
chronizing element for the incoming and regenerative unit. The IGBTs will now route the
DC link voltage directly to the consumers. The resulting and almost rectangular "power
supply" voltage supplies a current to the consumers whose strength and shape depends
on their impedance. If the power consumption of the consumers is too low, the DC link
voltage will increase in regenerative operation as well as the output voltage of the
regenerative power supply units. This high voltage can damage all connected units.

• Just like the input of a drive controller, the incoming side of the MOVIDRIVE
MDR60A1320-503-00 is not overload protected. Make sure during dimensioning that 13
the maximum DC input current of the driver controller (including overload factor)
does not exceed the input current of the regenerative power supply unit. If that should
still be the case, the programmable motor current limit of the drive controller should
14
be identical to that of the regenerative power supply unit. You will have to take the
overload factor of the drive controller into consideration in this instance as well. 15
• Keep in mind when determining the regenerative power that the actual current regen-
erative power always depends on the actually existing supply voltage. Use the 16
following formula to calculate the regenerative power:
P = Veff × Ieff × √ 3 × cosϕ (the following applies to regeneration: cosϕ = 1) 17
That means the maximum regenerative power in reference to the current voltage
value is based on the currently effective supply voltage and the maximum effective
unit current of the respective type.
18
Example: MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A1320-503-00 with a regenerative power of 150 kW,
maximum effective rated unit current 192 A (→ Technical Data), rated value of the 19
linked supply voltage such as 400 V. That results in:
P = 400 V × 192 A × √ 3 = 133022 W, rounded off to 133 kW 20
If the current effective value of the supply voltage is only 395 V or if it drops to an
even smaller value for a short period of time, then the maximum regenerative power 21
is reduced as well:
P = 395 V × 192 A × √ 3 = 131358 W, rounded off to 131 kW 22

Important notes • Only use the regenerative power supply units as built-in devices.
• Note installation clearances:
3
– You can install several regenerative power supply units in one control cabinet
next to each other without clearance.
– The lateral clearance between components / control cabinet walls may not be less 4
than 70 mm.
– Keep a minimum clearance of 150 mm at the top and bottom. 5
– Install the regenerative power supply units close to each other to keep the cables
short.
6
• Provide free flow of cooling air and exhaust.
• In case of unclean cooling air (dust, lint, grease, aggressive gases) that might impair
7
the function of the regenerative power supply units:
– Implement sufficient countermeasures, such as separate air ducts, installation of
filters, regular cleaning, etc. 8
• Do not exceed permitted range of ambient temperatures for operation.
9
Specified mount- The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A1320-503-00 regenerative power supply unit is intended for
ing position vertical wall mounting (±15 °). Installation site may be even surface only without use of 10
spacers or similar devices. In case of installation into control cabinets make sure that
the units are mounted directly and without spacers or similar to the mounting platform 11
and that the waste heat is dissipated appropriately in the control cabinet. This type of
installation is necessary to ensure cooling air flow. You will have a power loss of ca. 2
% of the maximum rated power of the unit. Do not exceed an air temperature of 40 °C 12
in the immediate vicinity of the unit. The air inlet and outlet openings on the top and bot-
tom of the unit may not be obstructed by installation material such as cable ducts and 13
other units.

Protection of
regenerative
power supply
units
The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A1320-503-00 regenerative power supply units contain com-
ponents that can be damaged by electrostatic energy (ESDS).
Personnel working on the connections has to observe the measures set forth in interna-
tional standard IEC747-1. That includes discharge of any electrostatic charges prior to
starting the job.
Discharge by touching the PE retaining screw or another grounded metal area in the
control cabinet.
System configu- Note the limitations for each system configuration! Contact SEW-EURODRIVE if you
rations / system are planning to operate regenerative power supply units in systems not listed in the fol-
conditions lowing table.
VDE compliant system configuration Operation of regenerative power supply units
With grounded star point No limitations
With isolated star point Prohibited
With grounded phase Prohibited
Specifications of • The cables have to meet the specifications required for the operation site.
the used cables • Observe the regulations concerning minimum cross sections of PE conductors.
• The effectiveness of a shielded conductor is determined by
– a good shielding connection.
– a low impedance.
• Use shields made of tin-plated or nickel-plated copper braiding only.
– The overlap factor of the braiding must be at least 70 % to 80 % with an overlap
angle of 90 °.
• Use the prescribed line protection fuses to protect the incoming cables of the regen-
erative power supply units.
5
Power Fusing:
connection • Consider the voltage drop in case of load when selecting the cable cross section.
6
• Protection of cables and regenerative power supply units on AC side (L1, L2, L3):
– Commercial semiconductor fuses 7
– Fuses and fuse holders/disconnector switches in UL-compliant systems must
have UL approval.
– Rated voltage of fuses must be configured according to the supply voltage on site. 8
• Protection of regenerative power supply units on the DC side (+UG, –UG):
– Fuses are installed in unit. 9
10
Connection:
• Make all connections as short and as low in inductance as possible.
11
• Use shielded cables to meet EMC directives (according to existing standards such
as VDE 0160 and EN 61800-5-1).
12
• Connect the supply system cables to the terminal screws L1, L2 and L3 (on the line
choke) of the regenerative power supply unit. Connection always has to be three
phase. 13
• A certain phase sequence has to be observed for the power supply connections of
the power section (clockwise phase sequence). The unit comes equipped with a 14
phase monitoring option. If the phase monitoring detects an incorrect phase
sequence, the unit will indicate the following error message with its LEDs "Incorrect
rotating field" or "Phase fault" (→ Sec. "Operation and Service"). Two supply system 15
phases of the power supply connection will have to be replaced.
• Connect the equipment grounding conductor of the incoming cable to the earthing 16
screw in the wiring space of the unit.
• Connect the cables for the DC link of drive controller and regenerative power supply 17
unit at the DC fuse disconnecting switch or holder. Ensure correct polarity when mak-
ing the connection!

Control cables • Connect the control cables to the control terminal strip X2 (→ Section "Terminal
assignment control terminal strip X2") at the control board of the regenerative power
supply unit.
• Do not route the control cables parallel to the problem-prone motor cables.
• Apply the shielding of the control cables over a wide area of the metal cable glands
on the flange.
Control The control terminal strip X2 is located on the control board (→ following figure). The
connections terminal block is modular and can be easily wired.
Match the control board to the corresponding supply voltage by using the voltage selec-
tion switch. You will have to definitely observe this setting when replacing the control
board.
Use the terminal control strip X2 to connect via relay certain messages such as ready
for operation or a centralized alarm outside the unit. You can also perform an external
RESET or switching function via the control terminal strip X2 and link it with the
frequency inverter.

1. The relay picks up
– when the supply voltage is present; 20
– when the precharging of the DC link connection is complete;
– when there is no centralized alarm;
– when an ON signal was received. 21
2. The relay drops out
• in case of an OFF command via terminals 7 and 8;
22
• in case of an error signal.
3. Autostart does not require activation of the ON switch (→ Sec. "Configuration")
Layout • Establish a connection over a large area on the grounded mounting platforms for the
regenerative power supply unit and radio interference suppression filter:
– Mounting platforms with conductive surface (galvanized or stainless steel) make
for a permanent contact.
– Coated platforms are not suitable for an EMC compliant installation.
• If you use several mounting platforms:
– Connect the mounting platforms to each other over a large area (e.g. with copper
bands).
• Install the power and signal cables separately.
• Route the cables as close as possible to the reference potential. Any free floating
cables act like antennas.
Filtering • Use only those radio interference suppression filters assigned to the regenerative
power supply units. Radio interference suppression filters reduce excessive high-fre-
quency disturbances to a permitted level.
Shielding • Metal cable glands ensure a connection of shield and housing over a large area.
• In case of contactors and terminals in shielded cables,
– connect the shields of all cables and connect these over a large area with the
mounting platform.
• In case of supply system cables between radio interference suppression filter and
drive controller in excess of 300 mm (11.8'):
– Shield supply system cable.
– Apply the shield of the supply system cable directly at the drive controller / on the
regenerative power supply unit and the radio interference suppression filter and
connect it over a large area to the mounting plate.
• Shielding the control cables:
– Connect the shields with the shield connections by the shortest possible route.
Grounding • Ground all conductive metal components (regenerative power supply unit, drive con-
troller, radio interference suppression filter) by using the appropriate cables from a
central grounding point (PE busbar).
• Comply with the minimum cross sections defined in the safety regulations:
– For EMC purposes, it is not the cable cross section but the surface of the cable
and the connection over a wide area that are important.
Additional notes Regenerative power supply units are electrical apparatus for operation in industrial and 1
commercial systems. These devices are not subject to a specific identification according
to EMC Directive 89/336/EEC because according to EMC Directive and EMC law, they
are devices intended for further installation by competent machine and system manu- 2
facturers and cannot be operated on their own. The verification of maintaining the pro-
tection targets required by the EMC Directive must be provided by the installer / operator 3
of a machine / system.
When using the radio interference suppression filters provided by SEW-EURODRIVE 4
and adhering to the notes on EMC compliant installation, the appropriate requirements
for CE-marking of the entire machine/system in which they are installed are met on the
basis of the EMC Directive 89/336/EEC. 5
The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A1320-503-00 regenerative power supply units in combina-
tion with the associated radio interference suppression filters are intended for operation 6
in environments of class A limit.

12 Startup (MDR60A1320-503-00)
• Check for completeness, false polarity, short circuits and ground fault prior to taking
the unit into operation.
• Incorrect connection could result in problems with the drive controller.
1. Turn on the power supply. The unit is ready for operation after about 1 s.
2. Check to make sure that the regenerative power supply unit is ready for operation:
– The unit is ready for operation if only the green LED of the regenerative power
supply unit is on.
– A problem exists if other LEDs besides the green LED are on. Remedy any errors
before you continue with the startup process (→ Sec. "Operation and Service").
3. Check to see if the drive controller is ready for operation in accordance with the cor-
responding operating instructions.

13 Configuration (MDR60A1320-503-00) 1
13.1 Important notes on configuration
2
The coding of jumpers (jumpers J3, J5, J6, J7, J8) on the control board → Sec. "Instal-
lation MDR60A1320-503-00" offers different control options and different internal func-
tions for certain error messages. 3
The different terms that result from certain coding options are explained below.
4
Autostart "Autostart" means that the unit starts up automatically with a delay of 1 s once the supply
voltage has been applied. The "Autostart" function is coded with jumper J1 on the control 5
board and may not be altered.
6
Turning off – on "Turning off" means that control of the power semiconductors and regeneration is inter-
rupted and braking operation of the drive controllers is no longer possible. 7
"Turning on" means control of the power semiconductors is being activated.
8
Save The unit comes equipped with an error memory that can be assigned certain errors.
Saved error messages must be confirmed via reset or interruption of the supply voltage 9
of the control component power supply. "Save" always results in a simultaneous "turning
off" and dropping out of the centralized alarm relay.
10
Confirmation Once an error has been remedied, the error memory will have to be confirmed with the
11
ON confirmation key or disconnection of the three-phase power supply.
12
Confirmation of an excessive DC link voltage, i.e. during braking operation, is not per-
mitted and may destroy the unit!
13
Phase failure Phase fault monitoring monitors power supply of all three phases. The unit will remain 14
fully functional as far as internal power supply is concerned even with failure of one
phase (e.g. error memory). 15
The unit can respond to a phase failure in two ways. One is "two-phase operation", the
other is that the unit stops operation and indicates the error via the centralized alarm 16
relay.
Phase failure monitoring is coded via jumpers J3, J5, J6 and J7 to the control board (→
following table).
17
Jumper
Phase failure monitoring 18

19
1 1 1 1 Insensitive, error memory "ON"
0 X X 1 Deactivated, error memory "ON"
0 X X 0 Deactivated, error memory "OFF"
20
22
Error memory "ON" means that the error display "Phase failure" via LED remains active
until it is confirmed.
Error memory "OFF" means that the error "Phase failure" is indicated via the LED only
while it is actually present.
Overvoltage mon- The overvoltage monitoring for the supply voltage will turn off the regenerative power
itoring supply unit when the voltage exceeds the rated unit voltage 1.15 times.
Error code 3 (→ Sec. "Operation and Service") will be issued as the error message. To
differentiate between error signals "Phase fault" and "Overvoltage", you have the option
to deactivate phase failure monitoring by removing jumper 3 on the control board. If the
system disconnects and the red and yellow LED light up (error code 3, → Sec. "Opera-
tion and Service), the reason for the disconnection is an overvoltage. Phase failure mon-
itoring is coded via jumpers J3, J5, J6, J7 and J8 on the control board (→ following
table).

Figure 14: LEDs with color code to display the current operating status
If an error message is generated during the braking process, leading to the disconnec-
tion of the regenerative power supply unit, the regenerative power supply unit may not
be confirmed until the braking process is complete and the DC link voltage has dropped
to the standard value.
We recommend that you block the pulse enable of the drive controller via the centralized
alarm relay to prevent any possible problems.
UCE disconnec- The regenerative power supply unit turns off via the UCE protective device if the maxi-
tion mum current specified for the respective unit is exceeded. The operating principle of this
protective device does, however, cause an overload of the IGBTs for less than a milli-
second far in excess of its rating for standard operation. This does usually not represent
a problem for the unit. If this overcurrent disconnection occurs often or regularly, the
result will be an accelerated aging of the power semiconductors and ultimately prema-
ture failure of the component.
Frequent UCE disconnections due to overcurrents can be triggered by:
• Overload
• Undervoltage in the supply system
• Defective or oscillating controller, such as in the drive controller
• An oscillating control value of the controller
• Incorrect dimensioning of the system

14.3 Maintenance
The MOVIDRIVE® MDR60A1320-503-00 regenerative power supply unit is mainte-
nance-free if you observe the prescribed operating conditions (→ Sec. "Technical
Data").
Check cooling air The cooling air vents can clog up in case of unclean ambient air. Check the regenerative
vents power supply units on a regular basis, depending on the degree of pollution about every
four weeks. Use a vacuum to clean any clogged cooling air vents.
Do not use any sharp or pointed objects, such as knives or screw drivers, to clean
the cooling air vents.
