Handling
Low voltage ABC is quite rugged and will handle fieav.y tI:eatmenvqujre:we:I L HoJ;Ve..,,er·, tiliis capabi.hty sn01:1.Id not be taken to extremes.
Bending
Identification of the phase conductors is by identification of the appropriate number of longitudinal ribs. The neutral conductor is clearly identified by
means of longitudinal ribs 0.5mm high by I mm wide, spaced evenly around the circumference.

Installation
lnstallat, ion or ABC is considerab ly simpler and less time consuming than installation of bare overhead mains.
>
LV ABC is installed with all conductors being equally tensioned, using a range of proprietary accessories which have been specially designed
for this application Accessories which are required for most installations are of the following types: -
This design has plastic wedge shaped clamp channelled to fit the four cond uctors. It sc ir adjusts evenly when the two bolts are tightened
with a spanner The bolts are long enough to insert conductors wi thout disassembling clamp.

2. Insert cores into slots of clamp
.1. Tighten boll until firm .
NOTES
The suspensio n clamr can be used for supporting aerial bundled rnnductor at intermecliate pole positions up to angles or 30 degrees .
Where this is required to be exceecled, two clamps can be paired together onto a double suspension hook to accommodate angles up
to 60 degrees.
The components or the sus-pensi{)ll clamp are surplied ready assemhk;d and do not require to he detached when installing onto the cable.
"-,
The rubber inserts provide maximum support and protection lo the cable ctqd are specially designed for easy assembly without the need for
separate tools .The inserts ;ire marked with the appropriate cable size and cart be used on cables having either left or right hand lays.

2.4 Terminal Caps(Heat Shrink Cable Caps)
These are designed lo stop moisture penetration into cut end cable when terminated at the end of a circuit.
The tenninal cap assembly consist of heat shrinkable end caps sized to fit the individual conductors of the bundle. When shrunk on
with a gas torch the heat melts a water proofing sealant inside the cap which sets on cooling.
Used as a mid span splice in cable runs and are capable of taking the full installation tensions. Each joint is covered with a heat shrink
sleeve.
The following support fittings are used to attach the J\BC conductor to the pole. If the pole also carries a high voltage circuit, than erect
the fitting to give the same inter circuit II. V. - L. V.clearance as required by ELOM regulation.

tension on the come-along,ensuring safe clamping
under working conditions.Jaws are ridged to provide
adequate grip on the cable without damaging it.
The cable and rope stockings are used for pulling the cable from its drum to its final position. The swivel is used as a link between the
rope stocking and the Al3C conductor stocking,it also relieves twisting stress that usually exists between the pulling rope and conductor bundk.

• RUNNING BLOCK
• CONDUCTOR ATTACHMENT
4-J
LOW VOLTAGE AERIAL BUNDLED CABLES
During running out ,the cab]e drum should be securely supported on drum cradle. The drum cradle should be on a finn foundation and
the axle leve11ed.
The cable is pulled from the top of drum.A suitable means of braking the revolving drum to prevent over-run is required.
On the leading end of the cab]e a pulling stocking is fitted for attachment ofa hauling rope. This minimises jamming at the running out blocks.
A swivel should be connected between rope and stocking to avoid twisting if a Jong rope is used with consequently high pulling tensions.
Bundle conductor should not be aHowed to rub on ground or stones which may wear away or damage insulation. As an alternative to
ptdling, the cable can be payed out along the ground from a cradle mounted drum on the back of a truck.
Ensure that the cable is run out on the same side of the pole to which it wiH be fastened.Lift the cable into each running block before
saggmg.
Bundle conductor cables are usuaHy supplied in 250 to 500 metre drum lengths and the section length - the distance between tension
clamps - should be a maximum of 500 metres.
4-2
Running Block
A running out block is required on each pole and attached to support hook bolt,(or support hook bracket which is attached to the pole
by strap tightened by a ratchet buckle, prior to lifting the cable into the running blocks for stringing.
At all but very minor angles, bundle conductor must be run on the side of the pole where the direction of the horizontal forces acting on
cable will pull the running block away from the pole so that when pulling and tensioning, the cable insulation will not be damaged by
rubbing on the pole.
When bundled conductor is to be run in close proximity to existing live high voltage lines (or plant) and there could be a danger of
contact, the live high voltage lines( or plant) must be deadened and adequately earthed in accordance with procedures set out in
,. ELCOM Safety Manual.
The insulation on bundled conductors is suitable for low voltage only, and should be considered to be without insulation as a protection
from the high voltage.
Conductor Attachment
Mechanical fittings (suspension and strain clamps) must be attached first to the hook bolts at each pole of the LV ABC section being
erected prior to running out conductors.

5-1
LOW VOLTAGE AERIAL BUNDLED CABLES
,,
5 TENSIONING AND SAGGING
Tensioning
The maximum conductor stress (recommended by German Standards is 40 MPa).However ,lower tensions than this rate are generally
employed thus avoiding : -
excessive staying
more use of heavier and expensive attachment and pole fittings.
difficulty inserting connector between tight conductors.
When a section of bundled conductor is run out it must first be pulled up to tension while still in the running blocks.
On the far section pole, the end of the cable is terminated with a strain clamp.
f,
At or beyond the near section pole the other end of the cable is gripped by a come-along (one which will grip the four conductors evenly
without damaging the insulation)and be pulled until the cable is almost at the correct tension.
At the near section pole a linesman will grip the cable by a come-along affixed to a tensioning device in order to provide additional tension
until correct sag measurement is obtained.
5-2
Sagging
In order to measure the cable sag required.two poles in a straight part of section are selected and the span measured.
At both poles desired sag is measuerd from the bottom of the cable resting in the running block and marked clearly
by encircling the pole with PVC tape.
The correct sag should always be used as bundled cables' initial sag must allow for the non-elastic stretch and
extra sag when operating temperature is reached during service.
When the correct sag has been observed, the lineman making off the tension clamp should measure the position very carefully
to avoid loosing any of the tension when he hooks the clamp onto the pole attachment.
Come-along clamps or pulling clamps must be suitable for pulling aerial bundled cable to full erection tensions. The clamp is
designed to grip all four cores without damage to the cable insulation.
