Liquids
API RP 1102 : Steel Pipelines Crossing Railroads and Highways
API Spec 5L : Specification for Line Pipe
API RP 5LW : Recommended Practice for Railroad Transportation of Line Pipe on
Barges and Marine Vessels
API RP 5L1 : Recommended Practice for Railroad Transportation of Line Pipe
1) Steel casing pipes shall be used for cased crossing of 12 inch Oil Distribution Pipeline by
means of boring, for major road and railway crossing.
2) Casing pipes shall be designed in accordance with API RP 1102 latest edition.
3) All steel casing pipe shall be carbon steel pipe conforming to ASTM or API 5L.
4) Diameter of steel casing pipe shall be minimum two nominal pipe sizes larger than the line
pipe.
5) Steel casing will be separated from the pipeline using spacer or centralizer. Spacers will be
non-metallic type that can stand the load of the service pipe during the installation,
hydrostatic testing and operation period.
7) Raw material records and certificates and casing pipe manufacturing records and
certificates shall be available.
8) Both ends of installed casing pipes will be covered by end seals with pull-on S-type. The
installation of end seals will allow minimum overlap with both ends of pipe casing.
Casing Spacer will be used to support the carrier pipe inside the casing pipe and
electrically isolate the carrier pipe from the casing pipe at the cased crossings. The
Casing Spacer will have the following properties:
- Resist cold flow and will not soften at design temperature.
- Resist corrosion.
- Resist mechanical damage while being pulled into the casing.
- Have high electrical insulating value and low water absorption, thus preventing
leakage and maintain electrical isolation between carrier and casing pipes.
- Have high compressive strength in order to ensure a permanent support to the
carrier pipe.
Casing end seals are intended to be used for sealing the annular space between casing
pipe and carrier pipe at casing ends so as to prevent ingress of moisture and water.
1) All inspection, examination and tests of casing pipe material shall comply with applicable
material standards except otherwise specified.
1) All steel casing shall be marked with the following information as a minimum on the
external surface of either end with low stress stamping showing in accordance with MSS
SP-25 requirements (as applicable):
a. Standard monogram (if applicable),
b. manufacturer’s logo,
c. size and wall thickness,
d. grade identification,
e. serial number,
f. the CONTRACTOR’s identification number, and
g. country of origin.
8.0 DOCUMENTATION
9.0 WRAPPING
1) Casing pipe shall be protected from corrosion by Polyethylene Tape Wrapping. Casing pipe
will be wrapped at field pre-fabrication area by machine and/or manual application with
polyethylene tape.
3) Primer shall be applied to clean casing pipe surface in accordance with the following
requirements:
The primer shall be applied to the pipe surface in a uniform, thin, rapid-dry film at a
coverage of approximately 13 m2 of pipe surfaces per a liter. This is accomplished by
suitable hand brushing.

The casing pipe surface is entirely painted with primer, and tape wrapping and tape
wrapping will be applied when the primer is dry to the "Tacky to Tacky" condition.
4) Wrapping tape application is consist of inner primary coating tape and outer wrapping tape.
5) Wrapping tape for each laying shall be applied a spiral wrapping with a minimum 50%
overlap.
6) Wrapping tape width applied for casing pipe are basically as follows:

1) All casing pipes shall be properly covered by suitable protective means to avoid any
damage during transportation.
2) Stored casing pipes shall be adequately supported at all times to prevent deformation of
pipe, to give protection to coating and beveled ends and to prevent the induction of water or
debris in to the pipe bore.
3) Ends of casing pipes shall be capped or properly protected (bevel protector). Plain ends of
pipe shall be protected by end cap plastic cover.
4) Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) or 3LPE shall be used for external protection for casing pipe
to protect again corrosion.
5) Rust protection for inside of casing pipes shall be performed according to the
manufacturer's standard.
1) Casing pipe shall be handled in a manner that prevents damage to the coatings, pipe walls
and beveled ends during transportation. Adequate strapping and padding shall be provided

when loading.
2) Foreign substances, dirt, steel shot and other debris shall be removed from inside the
casing pipe before stockpiling or shipping.
3) Casing pipe transportation by rail and in land transportation shall be in accordance with
API-RP 5L1.
12.0 WARRANTY
The CONTRACTOR shall replace all parts that wear or fail during Defect Notification Period.
