Elvis and Madonna: Queer life in Brazil. Elvis and Madonna is a movie about two
1 2
working class women living in Rio de Janeiro in the late 90's. One night, Elvis, a
photographer by day and pizza delivery driver by night, has her lifepath crossed
by Madonna's, a nightclub performer transgender woman, when in delivering a
3
pizza, she nds Madonna, whom had been robbed and assaulted in her own
4
home, the destination of the delivery. Released in 2010, the movie depicts not
5
only stories of working class people but also shows a realistic representation of
6
queer life and love, which was rarely seen on big screens at the time. The
7 8
feature also has a very distinct aesthetic of movies with low to medium budget
9,10 11,12
made here around that time. Alongside with that, throughout the movie you get
13
a glimpse of the different struggles lived by the different women, somewhat
14 15
well played by the main actors. Which is what makes it clear that the director
was not aiming to squeeze out breathtaking performances from them, but
16
rather for the overall and speci c messages portrayed through important
moments in scenes and sequences to shine through: from Elvis and Madonna's
17
rst encounter, to their trip to Elvis'parents house to reveal their pregnancy, to
18
the nal moments when they're faced with danger and have to face truths.
19
Though not being what most people would like to watch on a sunday evening to
20
relax, and also having its technical aws, the movie shows a sensiblity and
straightforwardness that overcomes all its mistakes, therefore inviting the
21
viewers to empathise with the characters, since they could well be someone
22
you take the bus with, a neighbour or a long lost member of your family in real
23
life. It shows that, even after all the years to its release, queer life and art are
24
not so different after all.
