1.What led to the Great Renunciation of Buddha?

Ans.* Siddhartha saw the four great sights – an old man, a sick man, a dead man and an ascetic.

*The first three sights convinced him presence of endless miseries in the world

*However , he saw a peaceful expression on the face of the ascetic.

* So, he left his family to find the answers to his questions about life.

* This was called the Great Renunciation.

2. State the differences between Jainism and Buddhism.

Give reason.
Reason: Buddha ‘s teachings were the Four Noble Truths and the Eight- Fold Path or Ashtangika
Marga. His teachings were based on ahimsa or non-violence, love and compassion for all living
beings. It was a moral code of conduct prescribed for the ordinary person. So Buddha urged his
followers to avoid living life to the extremes and to follow the Middle Path.

2. Mahavira believe in the theory of karma.Give reason

Ans. Mahavira believed in the theory of karma because a person’s karma leads his soul to be
reborn again and again. To attain moksha or freedom from this cycle of life and death, a person
should follow the three jewels of Jainism.

1A.The two major branches of Buddhism were Mahayana and Hinayana, two major branches of
Jainism were digambaras and svetambaras.

2A. The teachings of Mahavira were simple. His teachings were based on three thoughts.

They were the right faith, the right knowledge and right conduct or action. These three teachings
were called triratnas or three jewels.

3A.Mahavira preached five principles to his followers.

*Ahimsa(non violence) : not to injure any living being

*Satya : to speak the truth

*Asteya :not to steal

* Tyaga : not to own property

*Brahamacharya : to lead a life of celibacy.
