2.3 Intended use
The closed-circuit breathing apparatus supplies breathing air
for approx. 4 hours, thus making it unnecessary for the wearer
psi to breathe polluted ambient air lacking in oxygen. It is used by
the fire services and for appropriate missions in underground
and open-cast mines, as well as in industry.

WARNING
! Ensure that the connections are not soiled with oil or
grease. To avoid death or serious injury never allow
pressurized oxygen to come into contact with oil,
grease or similar contaminants. Either a fire, an
explosion or both may also be caused. 34721851.eps

6. Uniformly pull down and tighten the shoulder straps so that
the padding on the waist belt rests on your hip (figure B). 17. Use the display on the Sentinel to check that there is
adequate oxygen for the usage period in the cylinder.
NOTICE
ii To ensure that the maximum usage period can be
achieved, the compressed oxygen cylinder must have
a charging pressure of at least 2600 psi/180 bar.
CAUTION
! If the closed-circuit breathing apparatus needs to be
taken off the back in confined spaces, e.g. when
entering an emergency shaft, kinks in the corrugated
hose may cause increased breathing resistance.
Removing the closed-circuit breathing apparatus and
pushing it ahead should therefore be practiced
thoroughly to avoid problems in the form of interrupted
breathing.

automatically. Absorption of the CO2 generates heat which can
be felt, particularly when working under aggravated conditions
with intense breathing. This is perfectly normal and indicates
that the apparatus is functioning correctly.
Always set out in groups with at least two people wearing
the apparatus. Check the oxygen supply approx. every 10 to
15 minutes.
The period of service and retreat should be planned
independently of the low pressure warnings. When the 700 psi/
55 bar residual pressure warning sounds, begin retreat. When
the low pressure warning sounds, cease usage immediately.
When the backlight is required, briefly press the left button
on the Sentinel.
The backlight is switched on for 5 seconds.
When the ambient temperature is to be displayed, press
the right button on the Sentinel briefly.
Instead of the remaining period of use, the temperature is
displayed in °C. The display changes back automatically to
the remaining period of use.
4 Maintenance
Maintenance is carried out in the following order:
1. Disassemble the closed-circuit breathing apparatus and
replace faulty parts (see chapter 4.2 on page 17).
2. Clean, disinfect and dry the closed-circuit breathing
apparatus (see chapter 4.3 on page 20).
3. Assemble the closed-circuit breathing apparatus
(see chapter 4.4 on page 21).
4. Test the closed-circuit breathing apparatus (see chapter 4.5
on page 25).

Storage
After fitting the CO2 absorber in the operational PSS BG 4,
the shelf life specified in the Maintenance Intervals (see
page 65) should be observed. Do not exceed the 'use by' date.
● Store the PSS BG 4 ready for use in a dark, cool, dry, dirt-
free, and dust-free place.
If PSS BG 4 is stored upright, be sure it will not fall over.
Avoid exposure to UV rays and ozone.

Bodyguard II & Sentinel II Battery Status
As a result of a recent notification from the manufacturer of our currently approved Ultralife battery,
stating that the design has been altered; this battery now no longer conforms to the certification
required. Dräger have one new replacement battery approved however, we are also in the process of
attaining approval for a new Sentinel II BG4 battery.
The recently approved battery, Duracell Ultra Power must be used for all Bodyguard II units including
those for BG4, which will allow all remaining Dräger stock of the existing Ultralife battery to be
allocated only for use with Sentinel II for BG4. The Ultralife battery is currently the only Dräger
supplied 9V battery with MSHA approval. Until additional MSHA approval is complete, the new
Duracell Ultra Power battery cannot be used with Sentinel II BG4.
Timelines for approval of the new battery is currently anticipated to be mid 2014 although the
approval house have advised this is subject to change due to workload, R&D will continue to liaise
closely with them in order to expedite this.

The apparatus must be inspected and serviced
regularly by trained service personnel. Repair and
general overhaul of the apparatus may only be
carried out by trained personnel. Only original Dräger
spare parts may be used for maintenance.

Testing
Before starting up for the first time and whenever
the apparatus has been serviced.
Testing the BG 4 with built-in CO2 absorber:
The function test can be carried out four times
during the one-year storage period. The tests
should not take longer than 15 minutes each. They
must be noted on the housing of the CO2 absorber
with indication of the month and year and initialled
by the tester.
If the breathing circuit is opened for more than 5
minutes in exceptional cases, the ports of the CO2
absorber must be hermetically sealed with the three
polyethylene plugs.
