the children about words they don’t know and ask them for
their ideas on how they could figure out the meaning of the
words. After students have time to answer I will talk to them
about context clues and how they can be used to help students
to figure out what a word in a sentence or passage means. I
will explain to the class that context clues are words that are
found in the sentence or in sentences that are near the
unfamiliar word and also you can sometimes look at the
pictures with text for clues. The students will use those clues to
figure out the meaning of a word.

I will share with students that we are going to practice finding


the meaning of different words by reading passages and
sentences on the smart board and the students will take turns
coming up and selecting the answer they believe is correct.

As a class, the students will raise their hands and when they
are called on, they will read the passages on the board.
Students will individually come to the board and take turns
answering different questions on the smartboard. Students
who are not called on will answer the questions at their seats.

the meaning of an underlined word by the context clues in the
sentence or passage that was read. When the student has the
correct answer, they will circle it on the smart board. The
students will then drag the picture over the answer to see if
they have circled the correct answer. There are three short
stories for the students to read and two-three questions for
each story, for the children to match the picture with the
definition. If students have difficulty determining a word, they
will be able to go back to the story and highlight different parts
of the passage around the word to help them determine the
meaning of the word.

When the students are finished with the smartboard lesson,


they will finish with a worksheet activity at their desk. They
will read sentences and write in the correct word.
