News Sources Personal Response

The article that I based my assignment on was called WHY SOME HIGH SCHOOL

STUDENTS ARE CHOOSING NOT TO STAND FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM which was

posted by Arson McTaggart who is a student at Canterbury High School in Ottawa, ON. She is

not an Indigenous student, however, she did write this article about Indigenous rights and

activism. Her article was also posted on an online magazine called the Muskrat Magazine which

is a magazine meant for news about Indigenous people. The facts about the author were

communicated at the bottom of the article where they shared a few aspects about the author's

background. You can also tell that this magazine is meant for news about Indigenous people

because of the other articles that are posted on the site, and because of the ads posted on the sides

of the articles. The responsibility that the author had when gaining this information was to share

it on behalf of her peers, to show her support for this movement, and for spreading awareness for

this movement so others can see how to help.

Some aspects of this article that resonated with me is that how little something may seem

can become so noticeable and have so much meaning. I also noticed that there was no mention of

hate from other students meaning that most of the students support this movement as well. It was

only the teachers who were trying to get the students to follow the general guidelines by telling

the students to stand up, however, they may not have known why the students chose to sit.

Something that was new to me was the way they decided to protest this movement which was by

not standing up during the national anthem. I am not sure if this was the most effective way to

get their message across since there are definitely more ways to do this while making a bigger

impact, however, it is definitely a more unique way of protesting which is why I believe that it

should get more attention from the media.

In conclusion, learning about this helps give me a better understanding of the different

protests that are happening near me for the rights of Indigenous people, and what I could do if I

wanted to protest for the same thing.
