EE 504 : POWER ELECTRONICS

Time : 3 Hours Max. Marks : 100

Instruction : Answer any five full questions.

1. a) Mention various types of power semiconductor devices. Draw their v-i


characteristics and symbols. Mention their important applications. 10

b) What are the conditions under which a power transistor operates as a switch ?
Explain hard-drive and over drive factor for power BJT. 10

2. a) With a neat sketch explain the two transistor model of an SCR and obtain an
expression for Anode current in terms of transistor parameters. 8

b) For the circuit shown in fig. find the following.

i) Calculate the maximum values of di/dt and dv/dt for the SCR.
ii) Find the rms and average currents of the SCR for firing angle of 90° and
150° and
iii) Suggest a suitable voltage rating of the SCR. 12

3. a) With an example compare line commutation and forced commutation. 6

b) The circuit shown in fig. below.

Has Vs = 600V, Vc(t = 0) = 0 volts,


L = 20 μH , C = 50 μC and Im = 350A.
Determine the following
i) Peak capacitor voltage and current
ii) Conduction time of the Thyristor. 14

4. a) Explain principle of on-off control and phase angle control with regard to ac
voltage controller. 10

b) A 230V, 1.5 kW heater is connected as shown in fig. Find the conduction


angle of the SCR of the power dissipated in the resistor is 500 watts. 10

5. a) Distinguish between an uncontrolled and controlled rectifier. 4


b) Explain the working of a single phase full (bridge) converter feeding highly
inductive load. Derive the expression for average output voltage. 8
c) In the three phase half wave converter, the phase supply has line to line
voltage of 415, 50 Hz, the load is purely resistive with R = 15 Ω . If the
average load voltage is 50% of the maximum possible average output voltage
determine
i) The delay angle α
ii) The rms and average values of output current
iii) The average and rms values of Thyristor current. 8

6. a) Explain the working of a step down chopper RLE load with continuous and
discontinuous load current. 10
b) A chopper is supplying an Inductive load with a free wheeling diode. The load
inductance is 5H and resistance is 10 Ω . The input to the chopper is 200V,
and the chopper frequency is 100 Hz. The ON to OFF time ratio is 2:3,
Calculate the following
i) Average load current
ii) Limits between which current fluctuates. 10

7. a) Explain the working of simple series inverter with wave forms. List out the
drawback and how is it overcome by modified series inverter. 10
b) Explain the performance parameters of inverter. 5
c) A single phase bridge inverter having square wave output has the DC supply
of 48V and output resistance of 4.8 Ω .
Determine the following :
i) rms value of output voltage
ii) rms value of fundamental. 5

8. Write short note on the following : (4×5=20)


a) Dual converter and its applications
b) Cyclo converter
c) SMPS
d) Digital triggering scheme for turn ON circuits.
