The cane toad

The reading and the lecture are both about stopping the spread of the
cane toad in Australia. The author of the article provides three strategies
to prevent the spread of the cane toad. However, the lecturer disputes the
claims that were made in the article.

First of all, according to the reading, the first way to prevent the cane toad
is building a national fence. However, the specific argument is challenged
by the lecturer. The lecturer states that the method will not stop the spread
because young toads and eggs are found in the stream. Moreover, he says that
they can flow to the other side of the country with the waterways.

Secondly, the author suggests that the volunteers could capture and destroy
the toads. Plus, he states that the young toads and cane toads are easier to
capture.
The lecturer, however, says that it is not a good idea. He points out that
the untrained volunteers could have destroyed the native Australian frogs
because it is hard to tell apart the young cane toad and native frogs.

Thirdly, the article mentions that the researchers are establishing the virus
that will only harm the amphibians and reptiles. The author also says that it
will especially harm cane toads. The lecturer opposes that if the infected
animals migrate to America, they will also endanger the native cane toads as
well. He believes that if they are destroyed, the whole ecosystem will break
apart.
