Diesel Engine :
-One of the thermo-motor converting the thermal energy to the
kinetic energy.
-The heat is generated inside of cylinder.
-The combustion is Ignited by compressed air.
-Thermal energy is changed to kinetic energy by reciprocal
mechanism.

The Diesel engine is the converter

changing the chemical energy in fuel to the rotational energy.

Valve system It controls valve opening/Closing and controls the gas flow.

Intake & Exhaust It supplies fresh air to the combustion chamber, and exhaust the gas after
system combustion.

Fuel system It supplies and injects the fuel to the combustion chamber

Lubrication
It lubricates all sliding surface in the engine and prevents seizing by cooling.
system

K. Camshaft, tappet, and push rod

a◆ The camshaft is driven by the crankshaft via gears.
a ◆ Cam bushings are used at the journal on both ends to support
the side load from the accessory drive.
◆ The other journals are supported by the cast iron bores in the
cylinder block, however, bushings can be installed to these bores
when the engine is sent to the repair shop for reconditioning.

b◆ The camshaft has cam lobes to operate intake and exhaust

valves. The cam lobes are in contact with the tappets which move
tappet the push rods up/down.

c◆ Mushroom head tappets are used. Since the surface of the tappet in
contact with the cam lobe is convex, the tappet rotates as it lifts the
Cam lobe
push rod.

d◆ The spherical end at the bottom of the push rod is placed in the
ball socket of the tappet.
◆ The socket at the top of the push rod accepts the spherical end of the

L. Systems of Engine

1. Air Intake and Exhaust System

Intake System
5 Intake valve
-From the intake manifold,
air is forced into the cylinders
and used for combustion.
Intake air inlet to 1
Turbocharger
-Air is drawn through the air
4 Intake manifold
cleaner into the compressor
-Air is taken to intake
side of the turbocharger
air heater (if applicable),
and into the intake manifold.

Turbocharger air to 2
charge air cooler
-Air is then forced through
the charge air cooler piping
to the charge air cooler
3 Charge air cooler
-also called After cooler.

Exhaust System 1 Exhaust valves
Exhaust manifold 2 -After combustion, exhaust gas escapes the

delivered to the exhaust
manifold.

Turbocharger 3
-gas is then delivered to
The turbo charger turbine 4 Turbocharger exhaust outlet
side. -the gas then exits the engine through
the Turbo charger exhaust outlet port
going to the muffler.

Turbo charger -from exhaust manifold

Exhaust
2 Impeller
-provides pressurized
Air to the engine for Exhaust Intake
Turbine 1 combustion
-rotated by
exhaust gas
energy. Turbine
drives impeller.

Lubricating oil
Intake
-to air after cooler ◆ Passages in the bearing housing direct filtered, pressurized
◆ The turbine and compressor wheels share a common shaft engine oil to the shaft bearings and thrust bearings. The oil is
(referred to as a rotor assembly), which is supported by two used to lubricate and cool the rotating components. Oil then
rotating bearings in the bearing housing drains from the bearing housing to the engine sump through
the oil drain line.
