Part Two: Short Answer Question

Provide a short answer of 100-150 words for the following question. Do not exceed 200 words for your response. Use the textbook,
and any other scholarly resources to support your response; include at least one scholarly source.
Consider the personal characteristics outlined in the counselor disposition statement and select one. How will the selected
characteristic impact your future clients? Provide at least one example in your response.
Cultural diversity is important to consider within the counseling field. Cultural diversity is very important as many people have
different backgrounds. It is important to have an open mind and look into those cultures/ do research on the cultures that I have little
knowledge to continue building my knowledge on cultural diversity. When a counselor has knowledge about different cultures, this
can make a client feel comfortable and accepted. Chances are when a counselor is culturally sensitive and has an understanding of
one’s culture; they tend to be more empathetic towards their clients. For example, the client will have a better rapport with the
therapist because of understanding the cultural background which ties in with empathy and respect for one another. “Counselors act to
avoid harming their clients, trainees, and research participants and to minimize or to remedy unavoidable or unanticipated harm”
(American Counseling Association, 2014). When counselors have an understanding of one’s culture, this minimizes potential harm
that could be made. When a counselor does not understand a client’s background this could cause harm and create issues within the
counseling relationship.
