Corona virus disease (covid-19) is an infectious disease caused by SARS-COV-2 virus. SARS-COV-2 is RNA virus belonging to
coronaviridae family. Covid-19 can be detected by RT PCR (Real time).
This RT PCR is multiplex PCR used for qualitative detection of SARS COV-2 Nucleic acid in the specimen .This test detects
presence of three genes,N gene,ORF1 ab gene,S gene which are specific and confirmatory for SARS-COV-2.

If S gene is detected, it is delta variant unlikely to be Omicron. If S gene is not detected it could be Omicron. Full gene sequencing
is advised for confirmation of Omicron variant.

Notes:-
(1) A positive result should be clinically correlate with patient history and other diagnostic markers to determine the patient
infectious status.
(2) A negative result does not exclude the possibility of infection. It may be due to in proper collection or potential mutation of the
target regions of covid-19 geneome. A negative result in single upper respiratory tract, sample does not rule out SARS-COV-2
infection. Hence such cases a repeat sample should be collected.
(3) Lower Respiratory samples like BAL, ET and sputum are advised in progressive lung disease.

Comment : The results relate only to the specimens tested and should be correlated with clinical findings
