Learning by Growing
Mrs. Simon's class is having great fun and learning a lot about hydroponics thanks
to our tower garden. We have been growing and eating many varieties of lettuce, kale,
herbs, celery, and even berries. Students are getting hands-on experience and a belly
full of goodness. A special thanks to PV Alum and parent, Melissa Schildkraut, for
mentoring us through this process and to several families who helped fund our grant
through Gulf Coast Gives.

Page 14
Speed on Campus
As many of you have noticed, speed limit
signs were posted several months ago on
campus reminding everyone that the speed limit
is 5mph. Thank you for driving with caution at
all times for the safety of our children.
We welcome and dismiss over 2,187 students
daily so congestion is to be expected. Also, if
you drop off in a car, when pulling up in the
morning, PLEASE remain in the right lane, and
pull as far forward as possible or directed, until
your child has exited your vehicle. Please do not
pass other cars to move ahead in the line. Over
the next few weeks, several speed bumps will be
added at various spots on Python Path so please
be aware of those and drive accordingly.
Lastly, this is just a reminder that the most important thing we do here
at Pine View every day is to keep our students safe. This is a team effort
and your attention to safety will keep our campus safer place for everyone.

Accomplishments
Chess Club
The Pine View Chess Team garnered first place in the Sarasota Scholastic Chess
Tournament held on 2/21/16 in Pine View’s Student Union. Pine View had players in all
four categories: K-3, K-8, K-12, and Advanced. Pine View students took first place in the
latter two categories. There will be one more chess tournament offered in May. For more
information, the website is suncoastchess.org.
Vocals
In February, Pine View School hosted the Florida Vocal Associations District 11 Solo
and Ensemble on our campus. About 150-200 Students from all over Sarasota and
Manatee County were able to experience our beautiful campus and perform for judges in
the auditorium and orchestra room.
Pine View had one student, Natalie Taylor, who entered in the Music Theatre
Category. She sang “How Lovely to be a Woman” from Bye, Bye Birdie and “Gime, Gime”
from Thoroughly Modern Millie and received the highest rating of SUPERIOR! When
you see Natalie, please congratulate her.

Variety Show
The Pine View Variety Show was February 5th and 6th.
The Class of 2018 sponsored the Variety Show. The show
is open to Pine View students from grades 2 - 12. The
theme of this year’s show was Luminescence. Variety
Show directors were 10th grade students Madeline Blythe,
Arooj Khan, Soumya Kona and Alexandra Moyer. The
director’s shadows were Cate Alvaro, Pablo Gonzales,
Sarah Harding and William Khabbaz. Luminescence was
extremely entertaining. The directors did a tremendous
job of presenting a very smooth performance that kept the
audience entertained. Examples of acts - light rope
dancing, singing, hula hooping, Irish dancing and many
musicians. The house bands kept the atmosphere moving.
Once again another incredible Variety Show.

Judy Black Honored with
Congressional Teacher Award
U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan recognized outstanding public school teachers in Florida’s
16th Congressional District on March 18, 2016. The Congressman announced six
teachers who were chosen for the Congressional Teacher Awards, including Pine View’s
own Judy Black, for her accomplishments as a French teacher.
“I was once told that children are 25 percent of the population, but they are 100 percent of the
future,” said Buchanan. “And it's true. The education of a child is an investment, not only in that
student, but in the future of our country. That is why I established the Congressional Teacher
Awards to honor educators for their ability to teach and inspire students”
Twenty-five teachers were nominated by their principals. An independent panel of six judges
from Sarasota and Manatee counties chose the recipients of the Congressional Teacher Awards.
“On behalf of the people of Florida's 16th District I congratulate each of these outstanding
teachers and offer my sincere appreciation for their service and dedication,” concluded Buchanan.
Each of the school districts in Florida’s 16th District nominated teachers to receive the
Congressional Teacher Award. All of the nominated teachers were recognized by Buchanan and
honored by the Congressman in the Congressional Record for their achievements.

Media Center News
This summer, the Media Center is scheduled for major HVAC renovations. In
preparation, all 25,000+ books & videos need to be boxed up!
Because of this, the Media Center will be closed the last 3 weeks of May, starting May
16.
The last day to check out books and returns will be as
follows:
If you are interested in helping us pack, give us a call! We would love to have your

Student Astronauts
Congratulations to our Student Astronauts after 3 days of competition at the
Kennedy Space Center. While competing against mostly 8th graders our 6th graders took
2nd place in the landing competition.
There were 3 other challenges, simulation of launch, retrograde, and landing,
presenting a science experiment to be done on the International Space Station, and an
Engineering math competition. There were 10 other teams from Florida and Georgia.
Nolan Boucher, Abigail Koester, Aidan Hoey, Casey Consbruck, Demetri Papas,
Grace Arents, James Gray, Jaxon Carney, Joey Oliver, Max Marsh, Maximilian Carey,
and Tommy Morris did an outstanding job representing Pine View.
This competition was started 5 years ago by Peter Carafano and 3 friends at the
Florida State University School for high school students. It is sponsored by Kenney
Space Center, NASA, Coasis, and the Florida Engineering Foundation. This was the first
year they held the same competition for middle school.
How do you make the team?
Students had to download a 200 page flight manual, read it, study it, go to Orlando
on a Saturday, take a 2 hour, 100 question test with 4 other students. Their total score
for the team is ranked. The top 12 schools were invited to advance to state. Each school
can send as many teams to the regional test in Orlando, but only one team per school can
advance to state. They made an error in grading Pine View as a high school, and only 7
teams entered, so for this year they allowed all of us to advance to state.

Pine View Again Honored
as Five Star School
Pine View has earned the 2014-15 Florida Department of Education Five Star
School Award! The award will be presented in a ceremony at the Tuesday, May 3
School Board Meeting at 6:30 pm.
The Five Star School Award, first offered by the State of Florida Department of
Education in 1994-95, is a prestigious award designed to recognize schools with
exemplary programs that fully integrate the involvement of the following groups toward
student improvement:
Business Partners,
Families,
Volunteers,
Students, and
School Advisory Councils.
Both the letter and spirit of the school improvement and accountability legislation
are built upon the active involvement of parents, guardians, business people, and other
community members in an effort to improve Florida's schools. The legislative intent is to
return the responsibility for education to those closest to the students. That is the
schools, teachers, and parents. Recognizing that the involvement of the community is
vital to student success, the Commissioner of Education and the former Commissioner’s
Community Involvement Council established the Five Star School Award.
This symbol of achievement is presented each year to those schools that have shown
evidence of exemplary community involvement. Eligible schools are designated annually
and must be renewed each year. Schools that achieve this designation will receive the
Florida Department of Education’s highest award for community involvement.
To qualify for this award, a school must achieve 100% of the 31 criteria in the
categories of Business Partnerships, Family Involvement, Volunteers, Student
Community Service, and School Advisory Councils. The school must also have a portfolio
that documents the achievement of each criterion. Also, a school must have a grade of “C” or
above for the 2014-2015 school year to qualify for the Five Star School Award.

Let’s Start with Hello
on Friday April 8th
At every school and in every community there are young people who suffer silently
because they feel left out, alone or invisible.
Social isolation is an individual’s perceived or real separation from a group of peers.
It is a feeling that you don’t fit in, that you don’t belong, or that you have been left out.
The separation may be the result of a rejection from others, or from the person’s own
withdrawal from others. Social isolation can happen in person or online. Social isolation
can become a serious issue. Young people who experience social isolation can become a
victim of bullying, violence and/or depression. As a result, many pull further away from
society, struggle with learning and social development and/or may choose to hurt
themselves or others. There is a difference between social isolation and healthy alone
time. Not all alone time is bad. Healthy alone time is when you choose to be alone to
clear your mind, take a break from “socializing,” give time to focus on and recharge
yourself, and/or work through problems or possibilities without any outside influence.
Some people are introverted, and need more healthy alone time than others.
Fostering inclusion and community is an important life skill and with practice,
simple to do every day. There is no age limit to reaching out to and helping others! Pine
View School
administrators,
counselors, and the
PVA Wellness
Committee would like
to empower all
students and staff to
reach out and start
with hello on Friday
April 8th. Teachers
will provide students
with name tags to
wear. During morning
announcements on
April 8th we will
encourage everyone to
greet each other by
first name in the
hallway, lunchroom, classroom, EVERYWHERE!
“To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the
world.”
